It was commissioned on December 18, 1993 The shopping area, offering visitors close to 250 stores, is spread over a triangular area connected to the surrounding main roads through 3 atriums. There are 41 escalators, 2 panoramic elevators and 30 elevators providing greater speed and easy access for visitors. In 1995, Akmerkez was chosen as the best shopping center in Europe by the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC). In the competition, organized by this same council, Akmerkez was recognized as the best shopping center in the world in 1996. The shopping mall is now home to the world famous chic Italian restaurant Paper Moon, following branches in Milan and New York.
2-2.5 million people visit the shopping center monthly. Antiques, arts, carpets, decors, clothings, shoes, turkish famous evil eye, souvernirs, .... they got everything at the Grand Bazaar. Go there for shopping, well, I went there not for the shopping part, but mainly to see the grandest bazaar in the world, though I picked up some stuff... can't help it. It's fascinating inside with it's numerous labyrinth which will make you think, you'll get lost... well... I almost did, and also out with it's 22 gates. It's one of Istanbul's highlights.... so go see it even if you're not buying anything... that, I doubt!

Opened in 1988 in Atakoy, Galleria was Istanbul's first modern shopping mall. The complex houses 127 retail outlets, including Printemps, the French department store, and Vakko and Beymen, the upmarket Turkish stores. Besides just shops, the complex also features an entire floor of fast food restaurants and cafeterias, the Fame City leisure and entertainment centre, an ice rink, bowling alley, cinema, and conference room. There is also a park with capacity of up to 2000. Galleria is open seven days a week. In 1990, Galleris was named the world's most outstanding mall by the International Shopping Centre Commission. Criteria for the award included the sophisticated blue-print design, rapid construction, and unique structural features.
