İzmir State Opera and Ballet: did you miss an opera?
Izmir State Opera and Ballet is an old cinema since the beginning of the 20th century. Don’t forget that the variety of its population (apart from the Turkish people also thousands of greek merchants but also English, French, Italians, Jews etc) that formed the importance of Smyrna as a rich port and commercial center. Westerns had special benefits from the Ottoman authorities who were pleased to collect taxes because they gave western the privilege to built houses and warehouses along the central areas of the seaside of town. As expected economic growth brought educational revival, new schools, dance halls, theatres etc No surprise in early 20th century the town had 35 printing stores for numerous western newspapers, magazines, books etc
Anyway the Opera houses many nice theatre performances, opera and ballets but I didn’t attend any while there. It’s located in the center so I passed by for some photos only.
Soyer Kultur Sanat Fabrikası: ANATHEMA live in Izmir!
I found many small pubs with live music but I saw a great concert open air! The place was called Soyer Kultur Sanat Fabrikası but it seemed that no one knew about it because it was the first rock concert there! Anyway, my basic motive visiting Izmir was to see ANATHEMA live on stage. The British goth/alternative metal band was a favorite of mine during the 00s and I managed to see them many times in Athens but also in London.
I bought my ticket at Biletix office in Karsiyaka paying 30YTL. When I got into the place for the concert I had a bad surprise though, there was no one around and the old many that was probably the guardian told me “yarin, yarin” which means tomorrow in Turkish language! Hopefully, I had another day in Izmir and didn’t miss the concert! The next evening I was there again, the area was full of people this time and the surprise was good: the full moon was there above the stage and that was great while I was listening to their music.
Ooze Venue: Great Music, Lovely people
Ooze Venue, located in Bornova has one of the best nightlife experiences in Izmir. Every Wednesday Friday and Saturday, two great bands perform: Kirli and Cirkef. Cirkef is especially good, their lead has an excaptionally good voice, and you just cannot stand still. Everybody is dancing and it plain good fun
Dress Code: No dress code, just be comfortable, you will be dancing!
go to Alsancak!
At Alsancak there are small streets with a lot of nice bars in old Greek houses. Alsancak is the most elegant suburb in Izmir. A great combination of old and modern buildings. Many cafes, pubs and some nice but expensive shops. There are some small pedestranized streets that worth walking on. The music was rock in most of them. You can also find restaurants here although not any cheap one.
Just a reminder when picking a hotel room... traffic in Izmir is loud! The Turks like to use their horns to announce their presence, and it can go late into the night. Some hotels are quieter than others.

There are lots of restaurants and bars in Izmir. We went out for a beer to a place called 'The Lift' (Asansör in Turkish) which is located some 50 metres up on a hill. You get there by elevator, and sitting in the outside pub, you have a stunning view over the city. For more information about Asansör and other places in Izmir, see http://www.cankan.com/gizmir/13-interesting_places_of_izmir.htm
