The statue of Ataturk

    The statue of Ataturk stands in the middle of Cumhuriyet Meydan and presents Ataturk sitting on a horse and facing the sea. Erected in 1933 the monument commemorates the day Kemal came to Izmir with the turk forces. Actually this is the day that hurts greeks, as many greeks dead that day by the army of Kemal, But history and war hurts and unfortunately this is happening in every war and in every part of the world.

    The elevator was constructed by Jewish businessman Nesim Levi in 1907, in order to make life easier for the local residents going to their mansions on top of the hill. These days tourists use it to admire the views of the old streets and houses of Mithatpasa. Located in the heart of Izmir’s old Jewish quarter, it is housed in a 50m-high brick tower and after refurbishment in 1992 it now contains a café on the top floor, and the original hydraulics are exhibited on the ground floor.

    This big bazar is situated in a very old building. In the shops of this bazar you can find fascinating antiques, silver and gold accessories, handmade ceramics, carpets and other souvenirs. Really this is a bazar with an oriental atmosphere.

    The center square of Izmir is called Cumhuriyet Meydani. This is the central area of Izmir in which all four and five hotels, car rental offices, and travel agencies are situated. In the middle of the square the monument of Ataturk is standing.

    Konak Square is home to Belediye, or Town Hall, an imposing modern bulding from which today's business takes place. Just behind lies Ataturk Caddesi, a broad seafront promenade that stretches 2 miles along the bay and offers a stunning view of the gulf.

    Open-air markets held on particular days of the week.More importantly,the open-air market culture of Bodrum and its environs is something that many tourists look out for when holidaying here. There are all sorts of things you will find at the markets.The greengrocers,milkproducts,herbs,spices, olives,olive oil and cheeses are available.There are also plastic homeware,clothes,shoes and fabrics.

    The strange building that hold the museum built in 1831 as the St. Rock Hospital and had patients that suffered from black death! It is situated right next to the Archaeological Museum but I like it more because it shows many things about the local daily life. You can see many samples of traditional Turkish folkloric artifacts, a collection of Bergama and Gordes carpets, traditional costumes etc I visited the museum with Emek, my local friend in Izmir so we had some nice conversions about some common local customs the two counties share through the years. The museum is open every day except Monday between 08:30-12:00 and 13:00-17:00) and the cost is only 2YTL (1.2euro!).

    The Agora - originally dating from the Greek period, this area was rebuilt in the 2nd century after a major earthquake destroyed the city during the reign of Marcus Aurelius. Many of the treasures found here are on view in the Archaeological Museum. There is a nice view of the entire ruins area from the Kadifekale citadel.

    Visit Kadifekale Hill, or the Velvet Castle atop ancient Mount Pagus where at one time the acropolis of Lysimachos stood. The panoramic view from here is spectacular. This citadel with its massive walls and towers incorporates the foundations of previous structures from the Roman, Byzantine, Genoese, and Ottoman periods. On the slopes of the hill once stood a Roman theatre and stadium that seated 20,000 spectators. Here too, is said to lie the tomb of St. Polycarp.

    Visit the old Greek Quarter tucked quietly away in Bornova for a totally different feel of Izmir. I love this picture - these two had such a friendship. I wonder how many intimate conversations took place behind that door over the years.
