Konak Pier has been upgraded to a very upmarket shopping area where they only sell designer labels. The restaurants however have a superb view over the harbour and it is a great place from where to watch the sunsets

Sorry, a bit of Afrikaans humour with my heading, but here at home we sometimes have the ladies walking through the suburb selling corn-on-the-cob shouting mielies, mielies. I tried one of them, but we are used to sweet corn and I found these a bit floury. They eat it with a lot of salt on it, and I hardly eat any salt. Fortunately they were cheap so I did not feel like I was wasting money when I only finished half of it.

I thought it was such a novel idea of the sidewalk cafe's to offer a variety of games for its patrons to play. Many of the young people were playing backgammon whilst enjoying their water pipe or beer.

Along the waterfront there was these guys selling mussels and lemons. I could not see where they were cooking them, but it was a definate hit with the locals who bought bags full and were eating them there on the walkway.

It seems like most of the locals meet along the waterfront and sit at one of the many cafe's sipping away at their beer catching up with gossip and watching the sunset before going home after a long day of working. Nice way to live I think.

Saat Kulesi (Clock Tower) is the most famous and symbol of the city. Kadifekale is one of the interesting and ancient places there. Do not forget to do some shopping if you plan to do shopping in your trip, the prices are reasonable here compare to some other cities in Turkey. You see many wedding and night dresses in the shops. enjoy the traditional coffe and tea shops, turkish coffee and tea is hot and strong. You see fortune tellers and can ask one to tell your fortune while you have your coffee :-)

This is an artificial lake meant to be a recreational area for the locals. The lake even has its very own island in the middle. It's worth visiting if you intend to stay in Izmir for more than 3 days and you are already done with the "must-see"places.
