Izmir is situated 337 km from Istanbul. It has an airport Adnan Menders, a ferry terminal Alancak, a railway station Basmane Gari and the main bus station Buyuk otogar.
There are 5 flights from Ankara, 5 flights from Antalya and 5 flights from Istanbul everyday.
You may get to Izmir by train from Ankara for 15 hours and from Denizli for 6 hours.
You can also reach Izmir by bus from Istanbul (every hour for 10 hours), from Ankara (11 times a day for 8 hours).
We got to Izmir by excursion bus on our way from Selcuk to Bergama.

You can watch my 3 min 43 sec Video clip Izmir around by bus with Turkish pop music by Izel – York Yere.

You may watch my high resolution photo of Izmir on the Google Earth according to the following coordinates 38° 25' 11.15" N 27° 7' 37.91" E or on my Google Earth Panoramio Konak Iskele .

The otogar in Bodrum is in the city. To come there from the harbour you walk 400 m – 500 m up along Cevat Sakir Caddesi. At the otogar there are many bus-company offices and you can without hassle visit several to compare prices and timetable.

I can’t remember which company I bought the ticket from, but to Izmir from Bodrum it was 16 000 000 TL and it took 3,5 hours. The company had free service from Izmir otogar to different places around the city.

Turkey has an excellent bus network so you can easily reach IZMIR from many other cities across the mainland. The bus station is 7km away from the city in a huge building. You can go there by taxi (around 15 TL to the center) but every company has free mini shuttle buses for the city every 30’. You just show your bus ticket.

I was surprised of how many bus companies there are there. Unfortunatelly there isn’t any central Info point so you have to ask for timetables and prices in each one. The companies have more or less the same prices but not the same services. My favorite company is Pamukalle, an excellent company with modern buses, polite stuff, free tea/coffee and biscuits (!) for journeys that last more than 3 hours!

    Bodrum-Izmir costs 20 TL (12euro) and takes 4 hours
    Marmaris-Izmir costs 22TL (13 euro) and takes 4,5 hours
Istanbul-Izmir costs 40 TL (22 euro) and takes 10 hours

  • The Airport of Izmir (Adnan Menderes Airport)is situated 15 km far from the center of Izmir. There are many domestic flight daily. If you travel from Greece, there is no direct connection to Izmir. So the most frequent flight is to Istanbul and Istanbul - Izmir. The ticket for an around trip , Athens - Istanbul - Izmir costs about 440 euro.

If you want to travel from Greece Its is quite easy to reach Izmir from the port of Chios island to Cesme port (turkish) ,In summertime there are ferries, twice per day, and in winter time 2 - 3 days a week.
Izmir is 80 km from Cesme, almost 1 hour by car, or taxi. But there many buses, every 1 hour in summertime, which they stop at the central bus station in Izmir.

    Airport Transportation:

Adnan Menderes Airport(ADM) is situated approx. 25 km south of Izmir. A train runs from the airport to the centre of Izmir every 60 minutes and the journey takes around 30 minutes. A bus service runs into the city centre every 20 minutes and the journey time is around 35 minutes.

If you don’t know Turkish you will probably get lost inside the city, it’s difficult to find your orientation outside of Kordon. The bus network is really strange and slow, so I suggest to stroll around the center if you are here just as a daytrip.

The metro line is very simple but at least will take you to Bornova district. The stations are: 1) Üçyol, 2) Konak, 3) Çankaya, 4) Basmane, 5) Hilal, 6) Halkapınar, 7) Stadyum, 8) Sanayi, 9) Bölge, 10) Bornova.

Of course you can also use the dolmush the famous Turkish mini buses that go to many destinations but they do so many stops that the journey will take much longer than a regular bus sometimes.
But don’t be afraid, the basic attractions are in the center of Izmir.

  • Adnan Menders airport is the city’s airport, 15km away from the center. It has many connections to other Turkish cities or international destinations. If it happens to be in Istanbul/Ankara/Antalya you can choose one of the daily flights but there are connections with other turkish cities too.

There two bus lines to the city from the airport, one for Alsancak and one for Karsiyaka. I’n not sure about the company but I think it’s Havas that has great service in Istanbul airport too. Taxi is expensive, try to avoid it.

One of my best moments in Izmir was when I took the ferry to go to Karsiyaka district from Alsancak port. It’s fun, not expensive and of course faster than take the local bus that will probably stuck in the traffic for hours. As everywhere in Turkey I enjoyed a nice cup of tea inside the boat. There are 24 ferries shuttle across 8 quays (Bostanli, Karsyaka, Bayrakli, Alsancak, Izmir, Pasaport, Izmir, Konak, Goztepe and Uckuyular).
