Lunch with Linda

Here is the view from the winery and restaurant. It is really beautiful!!! In the foreground is Linda, an American now living in Selcuk. We met on the dolmus to Sirence and decided to chat over a glass of that delicious fruit wine! Made for a fantastic afternoon!

Restaurant in an old schoolhouse...

The Sarap Evi Restaurant is paired with the Artemis Winehouse, so you can have a fabulous meal while you sip that lovely fruit wine. The restaurant has a beautiful setting in an 150 year old Ottoman schoolhouse. The restaurant offers gourmet versions of traditional Turkish food at standard prices and in petite portions.

Artemis sign

Artemis Winery is famous for its sweet fruit wines. Flavors like peach and strawberry are perfect for sipping while taking in the lovely views of the village. Bottles of wine run around $5

Gözleme in Sirince

There are several restaurants/cafes in Sirince that serves gözleme (savoury filled pancakes). The one I had, with cheese filling, was a bit dry. I think the one with potatoes, or the one with aubergine, would be better. Anyway I had it at a nice place, called Pervin Teize Gözleme, above Church of St John the Babtist. The view over the village Sirince is nice from there.
I had delisious baklava for desert but could not eat it all. The pieces I couldn't eat I got in a doggy-bag.
The gözlemes were made just in the front of the cafe.

Gözleme, ayran and baklava: 4 500 000 TL.

Sorry that I forgot the name of the shop but you can't miss it once you've found the PTT.

I like the milk pudding the most!!! I think I am addicted to this Turkish dessert ~~ haha~~

Apart from milk puddint, there are lots of other sweeties being sold - like cakes, cookies etc. Get a try, I guess they must be also YUMMY!!!

Favorite Dish: milk pudding!!! (1.5 Million Turkish Lira)

The Chef of the restaurant, the daddy of the kids.

We came here just by chance but we were glad that we chose to have dinner at this restaurant.

Maybe it's low season of travelling, the chef was standing on the street asking people to eat at his restaurant when we walked pass. Although some other men did the same for other restaurants on the same street, we decided to eat here because this restaurant gave me a warm feeling - the chef, his wife and their two kids, a real family run restaurant.

We ordered 2 mixed plates - meatballs, aubergine, beans and mixed vegetables; 1 lentil soup, 1 chicken soup and 1 mixed salad for less than 15 Milion Turkish Lira.

The chef was very nice, I could feel he tried his best to communicate with us in English. He even tried translating the news of the earthquake in Iran for us.

Favorite Dish: Chicken Soup!!! It's not oily at all and served hot with half a lemon. It's just yummy!

Karamese Restaurant: delicious Turkish pancakes

Selcuk - gozleme at the Karamese Restaurant

For a very inexpensive lunch, walk to the Karamese Restaurant right across from the Isa Bey Camii, and sit down in your choice of elevated outdoor dining rooms.

Favorite Dish: Order the Turkish pancakes, or "gozleme", which resemble the French crepes stuffed with vegetables, meat or both.

If you're adventurous, try an ayran, the Turkish yogurt drink that tastes like watery salty yogurt.

sandwich stands all over Selcuk: For the cheap skates

If you don't want to worry about spending lots of money on food while you are in Selcuk, or just have a few minutes between going to Ephesus or other sites, the sandwich stands are the BEST in Selcuk.

Favorite Dish: Many tourists not familiar with local stuff tend to head straight for the restaurants, but miss out on one of the best foods in Turkey -- hot sandwiches with salami, egg, pickles, lettuce, cheese, -- any combo. And for less than a dollar each. You can get any combination, but trust me, the best is "karushuk."
