The Basilica of Saint John by Diana75 It is said that St. John spent here his last years and the church was built on his burial place. Justinianus (527 - 565 AD) was the one who ordered the marvelous Basilica to be build in the 6th century AD. During the years, the church was destroyed by serious earthquakes that's why some parts of it are still hidden, while the remaining ones have been recently restored. The monograms of Justinianus and his wife Theodora strike on some capital of columns.

Many people her have small setups where they sell all sorts of things: fabrics, cedar carvings, handmade lace, and dried flowers (as pictured). Also, many times people have these little shops in their homes and they usually get you inside by inviting you to have tea. Don't feel obligated to accept, but any purchase surely goes to help the local economy. Leave a Comment

8kms. away from Selcuk. You can go there either by taking scheduled minibus (dolmush) or by taking taxi. Dolmushes are every half an hour until 8.30pm. The village is a perfect synthesis of Turk-Greek culture as of the 1920's: after the Independence War, people exchange between Greek and Turks has occurred and all those typical Greek houses, though they kept their original outside characteristics, have received the local layout inside. As the village is located on the top of a mountain, anyone will enjoy the impressive wine yards' and peach trees' views on his way. Most famous with it's local wine and olive oil. Directions: 8kms from Selcuk, 10kms from Ephesus. You can even walk there! Actually you can walk down to Selcuk. I did with friends, it was one of the most enjoyable day in my life! :-)

It is settled on the top of the Mount B?lb?l and it is one of the most important works or art of Cristianity. The story of Virgin Mary is as follows:St. John comes to Ephesus with Virgin Mary because Jesus had entrusted His mother to St. Joh just before He had been crucified. Virgin Mary lives the rest of her life here and dies here. Moreover a nun named Katherina Emmerich describes this place in every detail when she is in a trance state, although she had not gone abroad from Germany. The priests searched for this place and found it. In fact the house of Virgin Mary is the place where there is a small Byzantine church. Since the Moslems consider the House of Virgin Mary to be sacred, namaz can be performed in the room in the south. After Pope Paul the Sixth visited Ephesus in 1967, the religious ceremonies which were held every year attrack great attention and are watched by a quite crowded visitor group. Directions: You can reach to Mary's House by the road that turns right on the 2nd km of Selcuk-Aydin motorway, 9kms far from the town. You can go there by taxies or with your car.
