The best way to travel to Kars is the plane. There are 3 airways which has flight to Kars. Turkish Airlines (Flag carrier, national airways), Onur Air and Atlas Air.
Turkish Airlines has fligt everyday frrom Ankara to Kars at 09.15. The two others has flight from Ýstanbul to Kars at 13.00 and 19.00, but I always prefer Turkish Airlines.
Train is a traditional alternative way of transport. It takes too long time from Ankara (27 hours) but with bed option, it will be enjoyble if you have time.
Bus is the last and the worst option. It is cheaper than plane and faster than the train but not very safe especially in winter.
To sum up, go for plane or train depending on your time and budget.

Ani is 45 km away from Kars and there is no bus going there on Saturdays and Sundays. I shared a taxi with another tourist, and we payed 60MTL (30MTL each, which is 17 euros, 20,5 dollars US). The taxi driver stayed with us all the time and let us spend as much time as we wanted in Ani. He explained to us that we were allowed to take pictures.
The road is beautiful from Yusufeli to Kars. There are 2 of them : the Southern one via Gole, which is much shorter, and the Northern one via the Cam col (2540 m).
