Kocaeli Things to Do

  • Mavi Dus

Or in English – Blue dream  There is a nice swimming pool and the place is very suitable for day time and night time also. In the evenings they have live Turkish music. Also wedding parties are taking there.

  • Yuvacik

This is an area in the closest mountain Aytepe. Ii is only 20 km far from the city but you can already escape from the hot weather. There are many places where you can have a picnic. We stopped at a restaurant where I ate very delicious kavarma( meat with tomatoes prepared in an earthen dish ). Later they served us tea in the nearest park where we...

  • Kerpa

Kerpa is a beach at the Black Sea, only 50 km far from Izmit. In Izmit there is no beach at the Marmara Sea so local people go there if they wanna feel the sand and the sea. It is nice place but very crowded. The water is warm and clean.

  • Seka Park

Sekapark is the biggest park probably in Izmit. Unfortunately we had time to visit it only in the nights but it was still beautiful. It is located along the Marmara Sea, it’s very quiet and cool in the evenings. Some cafes are working 24 hours and it’s always nice to have a cup of Turkish tea in a good company.

  • Park Lunasan

A big Luna Park in Izmit with different attractions. The entrance is 0.50 TRL and then you pay every attraction separately. Around the area there are lots of restaurants with live local music and a big lake which makes it wonderful place for chilling out and resting.

  • A walk along Hürriyet Caddesi

This is the main street in Izmit with lots of shops, cafes, and restaurants. In the middle of the street there is a beautiful alley with flowers and plants where most of the people walk. It is very crowded but there you can feel Izmit.

Kocaeli Restaurants

  • Keyfinn garden

I loved that place a lot. The only thing I missed there was a glass of good wine. They never serve any alcohol in cafes.Doesn’t matter, we were at a tango night and they also played salsa, wonderful night.

  • Café de la Rue

This café is one of the most popular and expansive café-restaurants in Izmit. We had an ice coffee outside in the garden and were waited by very polite servers.

  • Yildiz café

Is nothing special but a great young staff is working there. They serve nargille . It’s in a park and you can feel cool with a glass of lemonade. Turkish coffee

  • Osmanli

They serve very delicious pide(bread with cheese, tomatoes and meat – kind of pizza) and also kebab. It is not exactly in the city but it worth going there. Kebab and Pide

  • Maksut Bey

It’s a fast food restaurant on the main street. They always have at least 8-10 ready meals and you can pick whatever you want. But if you don’t like spice be very careful and look for a dish without peppers. They always put spice peppers. And better go and eat upstairs, there is an air conditioner and a view to the mosque.

  • Unexpected Service!

Nicely decorated cute place. But the main attraction is the service. No one can find any service like this one around here. I am sure the owner lived outside of Turkey for some time. Anything goes. They are good.

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Unfortunately I visited it my last night in Izmit. It seems to be kind of rock bar but also they had a little stage and played some local pop music. People there were coming to have fun.

Kocaeli Local Customs

  • Stop the music when praying

I noticed that every time that there is a pray in the mosques (ans it happens at least 5 times a day), they stop the music in cafes and restaurants, especially in those that are close to the mosques. I was very surprised and amazed - such a cult to the religion!

  • Pismaniye

It is a typical Turkish delight that must be tried at all cost. They also call it cotton halva. Here you can read more about it.Ismit is very popular with that sweet. It’s very suitable for gifts as well as locum and baklavahttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pişmaniye

  • Cai(Tea)

You’ll say what is so unusual about the tea - the way they prepare it. They have 2 pots and the smaller one is put on the top of the bigger and it covers it. In the bigger one they put water and in the smaller they put tea leaves with less water. It has to boil and it’s ready to be served. Be careful to use special cups for the tea and pure half of...
