The rituals of the Rumi's followers (Whirling Dervishes) are among the enduring as well as the most exquisite ceremonies of spirituality. The ritual Whirling of the Dervishes is an act of love and a "drama of faith". It possesses a highly structured form within which the gentle turns become increasingly dynamic as the individual dervishes strive to...

Konya Transportation

  • Big Buses

Aside from minibuses and tram, there's an extensive network of big buses the ply around the city of Konya ... that is -- if you know your way. Or, maybe ask... no harm.

  • Tram around Alaaddin Hill

The sights and museums around Konya is concentrated mostly around the Alaadin Hill and there's a tram that circumnavigate the whole Alaadin Boulevard -- the street that surrounds the foot of the hill.So if you're tired of walking, you can take this tram to move conveniently from one sight to another.

The only time I took the bus is when I headed to the main bus terminal of Konya. From the hotel I was staying I stand along the Mevlana Street and waved at one of the passing bus and asked for "Otogar Kampusu" and jumped in. Fare is I think 1.50TL. It is the locals means of transport so be ready to stand as it gets really full with students going...

Every time I walked past this shop the man would invite me in for tea. Since in Konya it's rather problematic for a woman to enter a restaurant alone I would take him up on his offer. Konya Local Customs

  • Taking photographs

Be careful in taking photographs of the surrounding of Konya especially the local neighborhood where there are people around. Ask the people first if you're taking their photos as they sometimes get offended and it somehow is a sign of discourtesy.Don't just shoot people on the streets, Konya - although already a metropolitan city - is still...

When I was in a supermarket, I was speaking English with my wife, and an old gentleman came up to me and began speaking in English. Konya Tourist Traps

  • chauncenetta's Profile Photo

by chauncenetta Written Apr 19, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

While walking around in Konya I passed a McDonalds for God's sakes. Seated inside were two American soldiers, a young man and young woman. I went in and said, "WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?" Actually, I was glad for the opportunity to see an American. They explained they were doing field manuveurs/training with the Turkish Military. I asked if they were training for Iraq, they laughed and said "NO! Don't worry, it's not going to happen." They didn't seem too keen on the idea & were optimistic that things would work out. Ha. Famous last words. So my point is ..... You'll get the same in McDonalds no matter where you go. Empty calories and bad nutrition.
