Marmaris Castle was rebuilt from scratch in 1522 by the Ottoman sultan Süleyman the Magnificent when he had set out for his campaign on Rhodes, for which Marmaris served as a base. Lord Nelson and his entire fleet sheltered in the harbour in 1798, en route to Egypt to defeat Napoleon’s armada at the Battle of Aboukir.
Since 1979, renovation work has been continuing at the castle, in order to restore it back to original condition. Under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture, the castle was converted into a museum. There are seven galleries, of which the largest is being used as an exhibition hall and the courtyard is decorated with seasonal flowers. Built at the same time as the castle in the bazaar, there is also a small Ottoman caravanserai built by Süleyman's mother Ayşe Hafsa Sultan. (From Wikipedia)

The Castle museum 412 1459 (Open-Tues–Sun 8am–noon & 13–17.30pm; approx €1) has a worthwhile archeology and ethnography collection.

"Thought to have been constructed by the Ionians, this small castle on the hill was repaired during the time of Alexander the Great. It was widened and repaired again by Suleyman the Magnificent 1522, during which time his 200,000 troops attacked and seized the island of Rhodes.

The castle opened as a museum in 1991, after restorations that took ten years. It has seven galleries, and has a collection of archaeological, historical, ethnographic and nautical exhibits. The views of the city are wonderful, with a wonderful panorama day and night."

I was expecting to see a bigger castle but at the end I had some nice moments here. Its history goes back to Ioanians but the building we see today was built by Ottomans in 1522, during the reign of Sultan Suleyman the magnificent. He had 200,000 troops here preparing for the battle of Rhodes, defended by the knights on Saint John.

From the entrance you see the garden and you go up the stairs either left or right side up to the walls for a nice view of Marmaris. Some parts of the castle works as a museum with some interesting items, amphorae, glass items, coins etc I didnt spend more that 30 minutes inside and there were only 5 or 6 other visitors so I could take easily photos in several angles.

The entrance fee is only 2 TL(1euro) open daily except Monday 8-12 & 13-17:30.

In a modern city, this was something I didn't expect to see.
MARMARIS CASTLE, has been in Marmaris since 3 B.C. Long after this, during the Hellenistic Age, Alexander the Great invaded Caria and the castle was besieged. The 600 inhabitants of the town realized that they had no chance against the invading army and burned their valuables in the castle before escaping to the hills with their women and children.

The invaders realized the strategic value of the castle and repaired several of the destroyed sections to house a few hundred soldiers before the main army returned home. The Castle was rebuilt by Kanuni Sultan Suleyman in 1522. Inside, there is a photo and information about this man.
There has been two Castles here. The 1st was built by the Ionians, and the present one is the one built by the Ottomans in 1522. It was badly damaged by shelling from a French Battleship in 1914. Since 1979 restoration work has been continuing at the castle in order to restore it to near its original condition.

For a visit of the Ottoman Marmaris remains start at the Caravanserai, an inn built in 1545, which includes seven small rooms and one large room. From Caravanserai walk up the stairs to the castle of Suleyman the Magnificent and visit the many galleries, including a gallery of archeological findings. Enjoy Marmaris Bay views from one of the castle walls, they are gorgeous!

Marmaris had a fort as far back as the 3rd BC, constructed by the Ionian. Since then, it is most likely that there has been all the time a fortress. However, it is generally admitted that the fortress that we can see now is much larger and was built around 1545 on order of Kanuni Sultan Süleyman. (Suleyman the Magnificent). It was partly destroyed during WWI and now used as a museum.

Bozuk Kale means destroyed Castle .Established in the Bozuk Bay, which is located at the southwest edge of the Bozburun Peninsula the most impressive remains of the building spread over a wide area which overlooks the bay are the well preserved castle in Burunbasi at the entrance of the bay. The best way to arrive at the bay and the remains is by boat. The Port of Bozukkale is an important stopping point for blue voyage boats. It is quite difficult to get there by land.

Marmaris Castle is high up in the old town and was built in 1522. It was renovated in 1990. There are fabulous views all round and the gardens are cool and pretty. They have tortoises in the grass. There are two rooms containing pictures and artifacts and it is not boring at all. Well worth a visit. There is a small charge to get in.

This castle was built during the reign of Sultan Suleyman the magnificent. the sultan had 200,000 troops here for the battle of rhodes, defended by the knights on st john, in 1522. The castle is now a museum and exhibits mostly items to do with the sea.

As history tells: well protected Marmaris Castle was built during Sultan Suleiman (the Magnificent)'s journey to conquer Rhodes. According to Evliya Chelebi the castle had already existed, and all the Sultan did was to change its name. During the Ottoman Empire, Marmaris Castle and Harbor were used as a supply point for the Navy.

From the top of the catle you will have wonderful view of the harbour, sea and mountains. It really is worth to see!

Marmaris harbour is a very nice place to wander around, with a great promenade.

Watch out for the hassling restaurant keepers/boat trip sellers.

The castle has limited opening hours, make sure you reach it before 18:00 hr in the evening.
