    The OLD QUARTER

by balhannah Written Jul 21, 2009

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This is a delightful corner of Marmaris to visit.
Hidden around the Castle, are lots of narrow laneways & stairways winding around beautiful old buildings which have courtyards and interesting old doorways. Quite a few are "Greek Revival Houses" you certainly get the feel of Greece in this area.
Take a peek, I'm sure you will enjoy, you don't know what you will find around each corner.

    Visit the fort

by sjvessey Written Jun 19, 2004

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The one historic thing to see in Marmaris is the fort on top of the hill in the old part of town. It's quite small, and what you see is pretty much what you get. Worth a visit mainly because it provides some excellent views of the surrounding town and bay, being one of the highest vantage points available.

Marmaris with it's harbour, the boulevard with lots of restaurants.
The little shops, the nice people. In one word Super!!

Marmaris lies at the south-west side of the Anatolische coast, there where the Egeische- and the Mediterranean sea cross each other.
Marmaris has 15.000 inhabitants, 9000 are living in the centre.Marmaris is surround in the north by the mountain Balan (993 m), peninsula Bozburun in the west and peninsula Resadiye at the east.
From origin Marmaris is a Greek word meaning shinning, sparkling.
I think that is what Marmaris is....sparkling!

    Walk the Esplanade

by balhannah Written Jul 20, 2009

    4 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This is a long walk, but its an enjoyable one as well! There are parks, plenty of Beach, plenty of seats and lots of lovely Gulets and other Boats to look at. On the other side of the road are plenty of shops. If you are hungry or thirsty, there are little stalls to buy from.
Just sit, enjoy and people watch, a very pleasant spot in a very busy city.

    The mosque

by JLBG Written Jan 7, 2009

Marmaris has four mosques. The one shown here stands in the old town and should be Ibrahim mosque, built in 1783 by Ibrahim Pasa in the neighborhood of Kemeralti. Most shops are gathered around the mosque. It is the busiest part of the city.

    A carpet shop

by sjvessey Written Jun 19, 2004

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Potentially an interesting experience is to actually go into one of the carpet shops. We had no choice because this one was where we had to meet the tour guide.

They'll treat you well, offer you drinks, somewhere to sit. And then out come the carpets. It's fascinating to watch the sales technique at work, so long as you remember to just keep on saying "no" whenever they try to get you to part with a few hundred pounds for one of their rugs.

    Explore the winding streets

by sjvessey Written Jun 19, 2004

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Near the fort - actually on the way up to it - you will find some rather picturesque old-fashioned streets, such as this one. However, even here, the chances are high that you'll still be fending off people trying to sell you things. It truly does become annoying after a while. A "clash of civilisations", perhaps?

    olu deniz - Blue Lagoon

by Conflictrealms Written Apr 19, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

If you are staying at Marmaris, ask you hotel rep or someone like that about olu deniz, Blue Lagoon. It is the place i remember most about turkey, it was extremely beautiful. You had to go down a lot of mountain road to get there, which is quite a pleasant journey. Seeing all kinds Turkish forest. Once you are at olu deniz, (after about a 1 hour drive from marmaris), You'll first notice the long golden beach with clean blue water...However, continue up the small, non commercialed road. The beach will be on one side, and on the other side of the road is a small long forest wall. You'll end up around the other side of the trees, and find diamond sand, and clear water. It is a cove type place, surrounded by beautiful cliff/mountain. The cove is joined to the sea when the road curves round. There are a few local shops, tho they are not busy. And you can get a drink after relaxing in the water with schoals of fish swimming around you. There are many types of fish, they all swim around your feet, i recommend you take a snookal so you can see the beauty of it all. The water isnt deep either, it takes its time getting deeper and i'd say it goes no deeper then . You wont regret travelling the 1 hour ride to get to olu deniz.

Eat at one of the many restaurnts

by sjvessey Written Jun 19, 2004

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

To be fair, the food we ate was excellent. There are many restaurants here, all very reasonably priced for the northern European wallet, offering a wide variety of both local and more international cuisine. Service is good, everyone speaks English and you will have no problems finding something to satisfy. The one downside is, again, the habit of the proprietors to chase you down the street trying to entice into their restaurant. Really, they need to learn to leave people alone, or at least take "no" for an answer.

    Tropical temperatures on Marmaris Beach!

    by Monique_T Updated May 2, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

One thing I really love about Turkey is the good weather. I can only remember one time we had a bit of rain but that was not in Marmaris. The beach from Marmaris is really nice. You can rent a sunbed there, that is the way to relax! And it is not very expensive (at least it wasn't at that time). There are also many nice pubs and places where you can have lunch or something to drink.
The sea is clear and good for a swim.
