    Calling the UK from Orhaniye

by johncummins Written Dec 26, 2008

Mobile phone coverage is excellent on the Bozburun Peninsula but calling the UK from a UK mobile phone is very expensive. If you are planning on staying a while or need to make a lot of calls you should consider purchasing a Turkish cell phone and Turkish pay as you go SIM card. The costs are a fraction of UK cell phones.

    Off road tours

by johncummins Written Dec 26, 2008

If you can access to a jeep or 4 wheel drive car there are a large number of lumber trails and lanes used by beekeepers high up in the hills on the way to Osmanya. These trails can be very rough so please take plenty of water and a mobile phone just in case you need assistance.

    Buying a silk carpet

by johncummins Written Dec 26, 2008

The best and most safe place to purchase expensive Turkish carpets is at the local carpet cooperative shop in Turgutkoy, the next village down the peninsula from Orhaniye. They have a vast selection to chose from, and can arrange delivery directly to back to the UK.

    Local waterfall

by johncummins Written Dec 26, 2008

In the next village down the peninsula from Orhaniye called Turgutkoy there is a lovely waterfall that is beautifully cool in the heat of a summer's day. It can get busy during the peak times of the day during the high season so please go first thing in the morning when you will have it to yourself.

    Optaining cheaper wine in Turkey

by johncummins Written Dec 26, 2008

You will find purchasing wine and spirits is very expensive as the Turkish authorities tax alcohol highly. To avoid buying expensive local wine you can try the following: 1. Purchase wine in the airport in the UK. 2. Take a day trip to Rhodes and buy wine in the Turkish duty free on the way out or buy locally in Rhodes. 3. Buy wine locally in Simi if you have a boat and have a spare day to go to this beautiful island.

    Sailing from Orhaniye

by johncummins Written Dec 26, 2008

If you want to sail and explore the beautiful Bozburun Peninsula you can rent sailing yachts from Marti marina in Orhaniye if you have the necessary experience and qualifications. Sunsail operate flotila holidays for the less experienced sailors and TopYacht operate 'bare back' private yachts for the more experienced sailors.

    Hiring a boat in Orhaniye

by johncummins Written Dec 26, 2008

When you are in Orhaniye and want to get out on a boat you can hire a gulet for a fantastic time out on the Aegean. Due to very strict local laws on who is allowed to pilot a boat you will find it very hard to rent a boat without a captain.

    Private car hire in Turkey

by johncummins Written Dec 26, 2008

When you are in Turkey, you may be approached by private citizens offering to rent you their cars whilst you are on holiday. Pleasse be extremely careful in these cases as in Turkey it is the car that is insured, not the driver. You may find yourself with little insurance if you have an accident. The tourist car hire companies are very well regulated by the state and carry all the appropriate insurances.

    Medical care in Turkey

by johncummins Written Dec 26, 2008

When you come to Orhaniye please ensure that you take out sufficient medical insurance as Turkey is NOT in the EU so the standard EU medial support is not available to tourists. The private hospitals in Marmaris are excellent and are extremey easy to use provided you have insurance cover.

    Best money exchange rates

by johncummins Written Dec 26, 2008

When you come to Orhaniye do not exchange money at dalaman airport as the exchange rate is always very poor there. Instead, if you can, bring cash and exchange it at one of the main banks in Marmaris on Mondays as you generally get a better exchange rate at the start of the week.

    Real meat from Bozburun

by johncummins Written Dec 26, 2008

If you care about the meat you eat, why not check out the local butchers on the bozburun peninsula? The local butchers source their meat locally and it is very fresh, to the point where you may be advised to hang it for a few days before cooking it.
