The Flintstone's Cave Bar: Sometimes a really hot spot for a drink in Goreme

  • The Flintstone's Cave Bar - Goreme
    The Flintstone's Cave Bar
    by Paul2001
Apparently the Flintstone's Cave Bar is one of the most popular place for a drink and to get social in Goreme. When I stepped in, it was not. This was because I did not visit Cappadocia during the height of tourist season. Just the same the bar was very interesting largely because of the it's setting within a cave and for its fun decore.

Fat Boys: Good crowd makes up for lack of ambiance

This pub may lack the ambiance of Red Red Wine House, but it sure does attract a good crowd, mainly lured by the giant TV screens showing live football (at the time of my visit, live rugby matches). It's a no-frills place to enjoy a few rounds of Efes and if you're more daring - raki.

If football (or rugby for that matter) is not your thing, you can hone your tavla skills here, just like I did. Chances are, friendly Turks will come to your rescue should you forget the basic rules. They might even teach you a few tricks even if that means missing their football game.

Despite its name, you don't have to be a red wine connoisseur to enjoy this place. While the house has a good selection of Cappadocian wines (reputedly the best in Turkey), they do serve beer, and the much-dreaded raki.

The place seems to have it all: ambiance (as friendly as it is intimate with its candle-lit interiors ); architectural integrity (formerly a stable with low arched ceiling - an original in Goreme); and history (it's one of the first backpackers' watering holes and Carlos Satana - yes, THE Carlos Santana - used to perform here in the '80s).

If you're lucky, the owner, Muharrem Serinsu, a chatty old chap, will entertain you with the history of the place. It's also Goreme's de-facto official community pub that's open even in the coldest of winters. Perhaps this is what makes the place more special - it's authenticity as a community gathering place, not just one made for tourists. A must visit in Goreme.

Located on the edge of town, Flintstones Cave Bar is the most popular watering hole. They play great music - mixture of classic drinking songs and new stuff.
The crew behind the bar were pretty damn spunky as well - which also helps.

i was there in april, it was pretty cold then, so wear lots of layers.

the fat boys bar is the place to go if you want to watch both turkish and international football.
the place is a favorite hangout for both locals and international travellers.
some nights can get quite lively and the dance floor might get busy.
the place has a nice outside seating area too for warm evenings.

    don't worry about dress code.
the place is run by a real australian girl and is very casual.

Organized Nightlife in Clubs like we are used to in western Countries will not exist here in Turkey's countryside...
    .
But why don't you take a walk in the eveningsun or even - if you are there at the right time - Full-moon-light - it will be a very special experience in this wonderful landscape, when you may see the lights behind the windows of houses , built into the rocks...

  • My biggest regret now looking back on my time in Goreme was that I did not go to a Whirling Dervish show. There are frequent shows in a town about 15minute driver from Goreme, on the way to the Neveshir airport. You can arrange a tour to a show with any of the multiple of travel agents in the area

  • Find a nice spot to sit and watch the sunset over the Cappadocia plains, especially in the direction of the Rose Rock. It is quite lovely. Afterwards relax with some good friends, drink some tea and smoke some nargileh. Good times!

  • I love turkish music and dancing, so combine this with excellent food, jumping over a bonfire and as much as you can drink and I and the whole group were sold on the turkish night out just down the road from Goreme. What a great opportunity to join in and dance on the table!!
