Roman Pool

I’ve been informed about our destination on the way: Gumusler Monastery and Roman Pool. I have an approximate image of a monastery on my mind, but a Roman Pool, what could it look like? A regular swimming pool? Something more bath than a pool? A pool-like ruin?After strolling in Gumusler we reached the second destination, parked the car in a place covered by trees which is not very common in central Anatolia. And Voila! There was a pool in perfect condition: An ordinary, huge, clean, unspoiled, old and marvelous pool! Its water was shining under the bright sun. Ducks are swimming inside, and fishes, too. It was one of the first hot days of 2008 and I wished to swim with the ducks.There had been a Roman city here and it must have been very wealthy. Gumusler Monastery

This was the main attraction of our trip. It is a monastery complex in Nigde, similar to other complexes in Cappadocia region. Entrance of monastery is in a wall-like solid rock. This huge rock is carved as houses and churches. The idea is similar to a modern housing estate.There is a ticket office at the entrance. The entrance fee is a small amount, like 2 or 4 YTL. (1-2 euro). Paying this fee let you see the inner parts of monastery. After passing a small door and passage, we reached a square court. There is a long pine tree at the middle. It is too long because it could only reach the sun by getting taller. This court is surrounded by the walls, actually inner faces of the solid rock. There had been a small mezzanine floor or a roof over the court sometimes. The holes of the structure still can be seen.
