 | Turkey Packing Lists | Tips 41 - 50 of 86 | | No real problems if going to an established hotel.
Remember to take long sleeves and trousers for visiting mosques and other religous buildings. Lots of unmade roads so good shoes advisable. If you are going out sightseeing, expect to clkamber over ruins, so again good shoes/trainers worthwhile.
You must have lots and pots of mosquito repellent !! They are quite nasty little swines over in Turkey. Also as a muslim country you may like to take a bath plug so you can take a bath, most hotels or pensions do not have them. (Sciptures state Muslims must wash in running water). Consider toilet roll if you have a sensitive derriere.
Take binoculare if you have them, the scenery is wonderful.
No real advice, we stayed in good hotels !!
Small change is good for tipping !! Take a chill pill - the pace of life is very relaxed in Turkey, but it is wonderful !! Leave a Comment

A bottle of water, something to cover your head with, not only against the sun, but also when you (as a woman) enter a mosq or religious place. And: don't look too naked (arms and legs) please, show some respect.

If you are going in the summer months, then don't pack any trousers or jumpers, you will not have any cold weather!! In the winter you can expect rain, so i am told, so dress for that. Also there are so many clothes that you can buy over there,( a lot for the men, not so much for girls) and there are a lot of named clothes, so you can pack half a suitcase and come back with a full one!
In the medical kit, take stuff for dehydration, it can happen easily, also stuff for the heat, like i got a heat rash.

Travel Inside Turkey Other Means of Transportation in Turkey Getting from Istanbul's International Airport There is an airport bus, Havas, but if you're unfamiliar with the city, it's best to have your hotel pick you up (ask them) or to arrange airport pick-up through a Local Travel Agent. There are, of course, taxis. It's difficult to estimate cost, but as a rule the fare from the airport to Sultanahmet is around $20-$25. Check with the Tourist Information Office in the International Terminal for estimates and advice on the best transport to take based on the time of your arrival and budget. - Airports: http://www.turkey.org/tourism/' \l 'Airports - Satet Railways: http://www.turkey.org/tourism/' \l 'State%20Railways - Maritime Lines: http://www.turkey.org/tourism/' \l 'Maritime Lines - Sea Buses (Istanbul Only): http://www.turkey.org/tourism/' \l 'Sea%20Buses - Inner-city Bus Terminals: http://www.turkey.org/tourism/' \l 'Bus%20Terminals - Car Rental Offices: http://www.turkey.org/tourism/' \l 'Car Rental Offices Airports Istanbul Ataturk International Airport (212) 663 64 60 Ankara Esenboga International Airport (312) 398 00 00 Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport (232) 274 24 05 State Railways Ankara Operator (312) 309 05 15 Istanbul Operator (Sirkeci) (212) 520 65 75 Sirkeci Station Information (212) 527 00 50 Operator (Haydarpasa) (216) 348 80 20 Haydarpasa Station Information (212) 336 04 75 Haydarpasa Reservation (212) 337 87 24-336 44 70 Izmir Operator (Alsancak) (232) 433 58 97 -421 01 14 Operator (Basmane) (232) 484 86 38 Maritime Lines Istanbul City Ferry Lines (212) 244 42 33 Maritime Lines (Information) (212) 244 02 07 Maritime Lines (Mngmnt) (212) 245 53 66 Maritime Lines Reservations (212) 293 74 54 - 249 92 22 Izmir Alsancak (Mngmnt) (232) 421 00 94- 421 00 77 Ferries Ferry schedules are UNPREDICTABLE and are all subject to change without notice. Buses depart daily in August and there are three departures quaranteed per week in June, July, september and October. Ulusoy, Varan (at http://www.varan.com.tr/index.html), Kamil Koc and Pumukkale are generally considered to be the top bus companies in Turkey. Ulusoy will be the most expensive while Varan and Kamil Koc are a bit cheaper. Pamukkale is usually the cheapest of the group. But different bus companies cover different parts of the country, and for certain destinations, such as Cappadocia, none of the four offer service and you'll have to use a local carrier. For long distance travel, most people take overnight buses. As a rule of thumb, tickets usually cost between $1.50 and $2 per hour of travel. All buses are now smoke-free (except for the driver!) The Turkish Embassy in Washington DC has a page with phone numbers for Ulusoy and Varan offices in Europe and inside Turkey. It's at http://turkey.org/groupg/coach.htm TIP: When the bus makes a stop at their special centers, you will have to pay a small fee to use the rest room. They are usually clean. Don't despair when you see the Oriental style rest rooms. Walk to the end and you'll find one or two Western style toilets! Below are some bus schedules for a few cities that will help you plan and budget your trip. Things do change so don't use these tables as exact. The exception is Varan, which offers departure times on their web site at http://www.varan.com.tr/index.html. We also provide a brief description how to get from the bus station (otogar) to town. Before going to Turkey, visit your doctor and ask for a prescription for Ciprofloxacin, 500mg tablets. It is an excellent general antibiotic, useful for treating many ailments, including Montezuma's Revenge. For whatever reasons: change of diet, overeating, too much sun, poor hygiene, etc., fully half of the people on our bus were sick at some point during the trip. So.... be prepared! The reason I took a picture of this toilet is... it was the only CLEAN Asian style toilet I saw in our entire trip, and it actually had a roll of toilet paper beside it — how unusual!!! Oh, and don't forget to have change with you, because they charge you to use public toilets!Ladies, you may want to make sure you have your own stash of toilet paper in your purse, and some Handi-Wipes. Love those Turkish toilets.... Us guys do have an advantage at times!
It is a lot cheaper to buy your film before going to Turkey. Yes, film is readily available in Turkey, but at twice the price (we're from Canada)! Leave a Comment
