do pack a swim suit

by vpas

While in Turkey, you just must experience a Turkish bath, so do carry along a swim suit. There are hot springs/ terraces in Pammukale, so it would be good to soak in them too. Also carry water proof shoes or a thick bag to hold your shoes while you get into the water.

a minor point

by namitas

Drinking water becomes a problem. You have to keep on buying packaged plastic bottles even at restaurants. Anyhow, when you fly in make sure you don't throw away the bottled water that they give yo in the plane. Carry them with you- that will be two bottles less to purchase while travelling. No hard and fast rule. There are tourists from all over the world in different attires depending upon the country they have come from. If you are Indian, you can wear a salwaar kameez too. In the summers it is very hot and we regretted not getting along our flip flops. sunscreen is a very good idea for the summers.

Guidebook on Antalya

by hopang

Antalya, Turkey's Southern Coast published by Mert Basim (MB) is an excellent 112 page near A4 size guidebook on Antalya and Southern Turkey. It contains lots of information and colourful photos of interesting tourist attractions and destinations of Antalya and other cities in Southern Turkey including Kas, Side, Kemer and Alanya. It costs between 10.00 to 15.00 Turkish lira (approximately 5.00 to 7.50 euros) a copy. Bargaining is necessary in Antalya. You can put your bargaining power to test! You can purchase the guidebook from several souvenir shops at Kaleici Old Town near the harbour. Make it a point to purchase a copy of this excellent guidebook on the first day of your vacation in the city of Antalya!

Souvenir photograph plate from Marmaris

by hopang

This is an excellent souvenir photograph plate to be taken back with you to your country! We purchased it from our Dalyan river cruise near Marmaris. The photograph was taken along Dalyan River near the King Tomb. The souvenir plate is waterproof, covered in plast with your photograph imprinted in it complete with a dark wooden stand. The plate is measuring approximately 15 centimeter in diameter. It cost between six and seven euros per piece back in 2003 - wonderful to look at and admire and to display in your cupboard!

Bring an Empty luggage with you!

by ilovenewjersey

Turkey produces one of the best cotton in the world. I suggest you bring an empty luggage with you and do a shopping spree in Turkey. You'll be surprised to see that they have a very good immitation of Branded lines of clothing in the Grand bazzar, Spice bazzar, even their night flea market along Sultan Ahmed. And believe me, they are of good quality and cheap. Between Grand bazzar and Spice bazzar, I found it cheaper to shop at the Spice bazzar and it's less crowded. And don't be ashame to bargain, that's the usual norm around there. Always wear a comfortable shoes. You'll do a lot of walking anywhere in Turkey.

Extra Bag

by jnolan

I recently went to China and a person brought an extra bag full of only bubble wrap. I thought it silly until they had plenty of room to bring back the most gorgeous ceramics safely! Clothes that you can wash in the sink and will dry quickly overnight so that you don't have to pack damp clothes. Bring a small bag of clothes soap, a plug for the sink, a clothes line and some clips. Immodium, antibiotics, body powder for hot climates. Try to slim down your tolietries. Find a all in one soap for body hair and face. Pare down your makeup. I have very short hair so I don't have to worry about blowdryers, hair gel ect. Digital and plenty of memory cards. Use rechargable batteries. Bring a few regular batteries just in case. Hat and sunglasses.

Visas

by PA2AKgirl

On the US Dept. of State's travel page on Turkey it mentions that a visa is needed for US residents to visit Turkey. There, & on other sites, it mentions getting the visa upon arrival. I do not recommend this...we heard stories about people waiting forever to get them once they got there & even being denied. I can't imagine taking that flight not knowing whether I'd get a visa & the waiting thing is against my impatient nature;-) My suggestion is to get it from the embassy or consulate before you go. For me, it took one day to mail, one day to process & one day to get back...it was efficient & there were no problems. You do have a choice between single entry and multiple entry which is good for a year, 3 month stays at a time. After those 3 months, you have to leave the country for a short (very short) time & then you can come back in. The multiple-entry visa must be purchased before...

Travelling in Winter

by batgirl1001

I think people really, truly underestimate how cold Turkey can be in winter. We can't count how often we met other travellers who underestimate the weather in Turkey and dress light winter/autumn gear only to find themselves shivering away when visiting attractions in Turkey. My down jacket was my lifesaver and it also helped I wore long johns beneath my jeans for colder climates. We experienced our coldest weather in Canakkale (very strange because they say it never snows in the Aegean), with light snow and icy winds. Temperatures average 4 degrees during the day and I presume below zero at night. Hence we recommend all the normal winter gear like beanies, gloves, down jackets (which is also waterproof for rain), thick socks, thick pants and everything else you need for winter. If you stinge, you may have an unpleasant winter holiday. Bring lots of film (because it is more expensive)...

Books & medicine!

HEADACHE & STOMACH TABLETSIt’s almost inevitable that you’ll get some kind of stomach bug over here. Unless you’re from the idle east, the change in diet will have your digestive system utterly perplexed and struggling to come. Be prepared to feel a little queasy at least once when something doesn’t agree with you, but don’t let it spoil your enjoyment of this country’s wonderful cuisine.EARPLUGS & TRAVEL CUSIONIf you’re travelling overland in Turkey tthese are also essential items. Even if you’re in a luxurious coach, it won’t compensate for the frankly poor state of some Turkish roads. The vibration and shuddering from endless potholes conspired to keep me awake, and without these items it as extremely hard to get any shut-eye on overnight trips! BOOKS!English language bookshops are virtually nonexistent over here. Though you may find book-swaps at some hostels, and the odd...

On the road in Turkey. Literally.
HOT means HOT...

by Malecka

If you travel to Turkey in summer, expect HIGH temperatures, ok?! I mean, there is no but, or maybe, or possibly cooler weather. We had TONS OF SUN for 14 days straight. 37, 38, 40, 42 Celsius. So bring LIGHT, cotton clothing, comfortable flip flops or similar open shoes. Sneakers are a good option as well, if you do not feel too hot, cause it is better to walk around in them. Some pills for stomack pain or diarrhoea, although the risk for stomack problems exists only if you drink tap water, take drinks with lots of ice cubes and eat too much donner kebab, or spicy food sold on the street.LOTS OF SUNSCREEN... lots of it (I actually took a look at the price of a product I was using, the Nivea baby sunscreen cream, 30 SPF, and it was twice as expensive than Macedonia) One of those things that kill mosquitos... Sorry my english fails me here, not sure what they are called. Just use...
