Turkish Delight

by Sharrie

TURKISH DELIGHT is a kind of snack where most tourists will buy to bring home for friends & families. One can buy them almost everywhere though I was told majority are very sweet. Priced at around US$5 for each box, it has many different types of fillings like hazelnuts, pistachio nuts or peanuts. Some are mint flavored while others are orange flavored. Personally, I like those with pistachio nuts :-)

Red Wine, Turasan Sarapcilik

by Sharrie

In Cappadocia area, you could buy one of these decorative modules which contain red wine in them. It's really inexpensive (about US$3) & a great gift to most people. In fact, this should really be in the shopping tip section but since it involves alcohol, I shall leave it here instead.Turkish wine are good & inexpensive. Restaurants carry many choices, esp. those of Doluca & Kavaklidere. Some local terms:* Sarap - wine.* Kirmizi - red.* Roze - rose.* Kopuklu - sparkling.* Beyaz - white.* Cin - gin.* Kanyak - brandy.* Viski - whisky.Whatever you drink, if you are one who holds your liquor well, try the RAKI, the local version of French Pastis. It is made by Tekel.

Elma Cay (Apple Tea)

by Sharrie

Turkey is famous for its Turkish Coffee but the national drink on the other hand is really CAY (tea)! Turkish cay is usually served in small glasses. Order a duble (comes in drinking glass) if you need more. Turks drink their tea in the outdoor tea garden like the Chinese in Sichuan does. It's usually drink without adding milk to it. Same for the Chinese tea as well (never never add milk to Chinese tea!). There are many kinds of Turkish Tea, some of which are: Adacay (island tea), ihlamur (linden-flower tea), Papatya Cayi (camomile tea) & Elma Cay (apple tea). Apple tea is caffeine-free by the way, for those who are health-concious.

All kinds of vegetable soup!

by Sharrie

Soup - It comes with all meals & each one of them tastes great. In Turkish, soup is known as Corba. For a sample, try the sebze corbasi (vegetable soup), tavuk corbasi (chicken soup), mercimek corbasi (lentil soup), ezo gelin corbasi (lentil & rice soup), domates corbasi (tomato soup) & yayla corbasi (yogurt & barley soup)!

Interesting food; charming guy ;-)

by Sharrie

HAZIR YEMEK means ready food. Generally self-servis cafetarias where decor are nonexistent & where you can eat as much fresh bread as you wish for a nominal fee. If you see the word Lokanta, it means restaurant with delicious & inexpensive food. Well, that's the way I understand it :-) & including warm welcome as well! See the chap with that smile, can u resist that? ;-)

More Kebap!

by Sharrie

This is one of the best meals we had in Turkey & it's very economical as well. Less than US$3 for a meal with salad & some fries. By the way, if you like it hot, just tell the kebapci (the person who cooks kebap) adana (ah-DAHN-nah).

Tevfik Kis: Pide ve Kebap

by Sharrie

My favorite Kebab outlet! We found it in Ankara. We were very bored that evening after walking around for an hour as most of the shops were closed due to Bayram. Turkey celebrates Bayram after Ramadan instead of Hari Raya (New Year). So, we settled for food instead. Little did we expect that it turned out to be one of the best meals we had in the entire trip! It was cheap & delicious!

Beef Kebab (or is it Kebap?)

by Sharrie

KEBAP (Roast Meat) is fun, esp. the ones that are served at the firepit. Kebapci is a person who cooks kebap. There are many restaurants & fast food serving sis kebap in Turkey. Take your pick, chances are no matter where you eat, they are great! The Turks usually eat them with salad & ayran (a yogurt mixed with spring water).

Kofteci Ramiz: Kofte

by Sharrie

Kofte is meatballs! Let's face it, I'll never get used to eating meatballs meal after meal! It's either beef or mutton in Turkey! Well, at least that's the choices we were given on the tour itself. Not much of seafood. Chicken is available but they are all breast meat. I don't like breast meat :-(. So, I was most probably the only person who had either beef or mutton for most of our meals! Frankly, beef in Turkey tastes VERY different from all parts of the world. & I've eaten lots of beef from the world as well. It has a very strong flavor & at times, the Turks even blend it with mutton, especially when it's served as meatballs. There's only one restaurant we visited that served the best Kofte (as pictured) I've had for my entire trip. That's the restaurant in Aksehir. I specifically ask Burak for the name of the town. Kofteci Ramiz has been serving Kofte since 1928!!! Kofteci...

Bread

by Sharrie

Bread comes in all sizes, shapes & colors. This is probably one of their staples. It's strange to be served bread & rice in the same meal. Generally, bread is taken in all meals.Pasta in Turkey is not noodles, it's pastry! So be forewarned :-) Kuru Pasta is dry pastry while Yas Pasta is moist pastry.
