Ayran

by Sharrie

Turkey's version of yogurt. It's supposed to be good for health. TRL750,000 to TRL1.5 m, depending on where one gets it. The one I tried was much lighter than the conventional yogurt, somewhat like skim milk texture but with a little salty taste to it. Some of my traveling companions love it while others don't think much of it. Personally, I prefer yogurt though I may not have tried the best.

Olive for breakfast, Turkish style ;-)

by Sharrie

This has to be the only place on the whole wide world that has olive for breakfast! Olive for breakfast, oliver for lunch, olive oil for cooking, olive oil for frying, olive oil for the hair & skin & olive soap for bathing!!! Popeye's wonderland ;-)As for me, I only like olive (oil) for my hair :-)))

The Pudding Shop (Istanbul)

by SirRichard

A classical restaurant in Istanbul. It was one of the favourites of the hippies that in the 60's started here their travels to India by bus.Divanyolu caddesi, 6, close to the hyppodrome and the cisterns. If you don't know the turkish cuisine, tell the waiter and he will go with you to the kitchen and show you right there all the items they serve. You just point at 2 or 3 and they will serve you that!

Cafeterias

by travelmad478

I am a huge fan of the cafeteria-style food that is all over Istanbul--pick anyplace where you can see the food from the window outside. The cheaper, the better! Stand in front of the big steam table, point at everything you want, pay at the register, and eat up a storm. It's fantastic. YOGURT!!! I am a huge fan of yogurt and Turkey has some of the best in the world. The cheese is great too. And the eggplant dishes. And the borek. And the desserts (definitely go beyond baklava and try them all!) And... and... well, you get the idea.

Doy Doy: Behind the Blue Mosque

by Shelleya

Sultanahmet is filled with expensive restaurants geared toward partying tourists. Just behind the Blue Mosque there are a few restaurants that are a little less frequented and provide amazing inexpensive Turkish food. Try these. Doy Doy was our favorite. Cacik and Corbasi!!!

Turkisch kitchen

by Listig

Turkisch kitchen is various. Beside local there are italian, german, russian and another dishes. Honey cakes is very popular there. But I advise you to try a trout which you can choose from aquarium someself.

Tea

by ania70pl

In Turkey you can get tea everywhere, it's a kind of their national drink .They serve it everywhere, in the shops, on the bazaars, also on the streets, in small glasses. But to feel the real atmosphere you should go to the small tea bars to drink a tea between Turks. If you are a woman it's very probably that you'll be the only one woman there, it seems that Turkish women don't like tea ;-)

Everywhere: Iskhander kebabs

by adz

I can't remember all the names of the restaurants that I went to, but make sure you go to the local restaurants - they are usually a few streets in from the touristy ones. Most of these restaurants will have at least one person who can speak English, so don't worry about the language barrier. Iskhander kebabs - kebab meat with salad and greek style yoghurt - yummmmm.

Plenty to choose from

by Bavavia

There are a multitude of restaurants to eat at in Istanbul ( I stayed in Sultanahmet). They were mostly outside cafes and were very nice and clean and had wonderful menus. I wish I had time to try them all! Chicken Shiska Bobs and rice...all very fresh and perfectly grilled..and so cheap! To dine out and have a 4 course meal is incredibly cheap and the food is excellent

Lovely Turkish alcohol ;-)

by rachel_sun

I didn't try desserts because i was so full. You must try mushrooms baked in the oven with cheese and garlic(yummy).Raki is the national alcoholic drink. It is a grape brandy with an aniseed flavour. It is strong. There are two types of lager available,Efes Pilsen is the local brand and is very nice.Tuborg is a Danish beer produced under licence in Turkey.Ipreferred the Turkish wine myself. It was very nice.Turkish spirits are nice served with the right mixers.I found vodka nice. The most popular drink of all in Turkey is Cay(tea) and this is what you will be offered in shops and by people who invite you to their homes. The food was great value, most nights we had a main meal with wine and bread for about £5 each.During the day,i had a glass of wine, stuffeb baked aubergine and bread for £3,great value....THE FOOD AT KALKAN WAS GREAT VALUE TOO.More stunning scenery
