Assorted stuffed vegetables, like the ones shown here can be found almost in any Turkish restaurant. They're all delicious. You just pick up the ones you like. It's so cheap, you don't need to think twice about taking several plates just to taste the different dishes. Don't be fooled though, two identical looking stuffed vine leaves can taste completely different! Each made with its own spice. You'll just have to try them all :)
There are many small restaurants that will offer you this type of food. Especially in the tourist zones in Istanbul like Sultan Ahmet, Sirkeci, Misir Chrshi, Taksim Square. Vey small pieces of meat - chicken or beef, with variety of vegetables, well baked. MMMMMM, nice.The other good thing is the price, notmally you can have a dish for less than $1 and the bread, which is very nice is for free. You see the big box next to me? Eat as much as you can :)

Pide is a staple Turkish food and you'll find it all over the country. In touristy areas it's advertised as Turkish Pizza but that doesn't really do it justice. Pide is a long thin banana shaped bread, rolled with some skill from a small ball of dough. The bread is then covered with the topping of your choice and slammed into a large, solid fuel burning oven for about 10 minutes. The resulting pide is sliced up and served piping hot. The most common toppings are listed below. Bursa is a great place to try out seafood. There are restaurants specializing it seafood all over the city. One of the odder spots to try some fish is Arap Sukru Sokagi. This is actually five restaurants going by the same name located on Sakarya Caddesi. They are run by the same extended family. Seafood is the speciality here and you will notice that they have all of the varieties of fish that they service hanging off the hooks by the doors. This means there are lots of stray cats hanging around too. There are usually local muscians playing folk music here too. I ate well here and I recommend that you check out any of these restaurants.
I have eaten Iskaner kebab all around Turkey, but the city Bursa is famous for its Iskander kebabs, also called Bursa kebab.An Iskander kebab is a plate with slices of meet from a skewer, served on flat bread with tomato sauce. Melted butter is poured over it and yoghurt is on the side of it.I had a very delicious Iskander kebab in Bursa, probably the best I had in Turkey, but it was also the most expensive Iskander kebab I had in Turkey. The kebab was 8 000 000 TL and the orange drink 2 000 000 TL. I ate it at a restaurant on Atatürk Caddesi, next to Ulu Camii.
The Turkish hotel breakfast looks the same almost everywhere. You will get a lot of white bread, a boiled egg, cucumber, tomatoes, black olives and a piece of white cheese. For the bread you will also get butter, jam and/or honey and cream cheese. To drink there is always tea and often also instant coffee (at a few places you have to pay extra for the coffee).
Simit is a sesame-covered bread ring. It is sold everywhere in Turkey and it is a good snack to buy when you are on the way, and it is cheap. The price for one simit is 250 000 TL (June2004) in many cities. In Istanbul the price is 300 000 TL.
This breakfast is what you will be offered in most lower end hostels and hotels. It is a simple one with fresh bread, some cheese, olives, boiled egg, cucumber, and some tomatoes. Most of the time it is served with cai - turkish tea. Its a tasty start to your day but after eating it for a month straight, its gets a little boring!
If you're on a really tight budget like I was, try eating simit - seseme seed covered bread twists! They are sold everywhere on the streets and are very tasty. Other cheap vendor options include fresh corn or kababs. Turkish food is amazing in restaurants but also good out on the streets!
