Grand Bazaar by hopang The Grand Bazaar (Kapali Carsi in Turkish meaning the covered market) is located at Nuri Osmaniye in Old Istanbul. It is one of the largest covered markets in the world. It is also one of the oldest markets in the world as the building under one roof was constructed in the 15th century. Thus it has been an important trading centre since the 15th century! Grand Bazaar has approximately 4,000 shops and stalls with amazing 60 streets! It claims to be visited by approximately 300,000 visitors a day! It is such a huge building that it is easy to get lost inside the Grand Bazaar. The Grand Bazaar has four main gates. It covers a total area of approximately 30 hectares. The building has hundreds of domes which are covered with windows. It is undoubtedly a shopper's paradise. It is colourful and elegance and is considered a "must-visit" tourist attraction for any visitor who visits Istanbul. Wide varieties of consumer goods are available at Grand Bazaar such as fashion and jewelleries, watches, pottery, souvenirs, textiles and clothings, carpet, Turkish ceramics, spices, embroideries, copper and brassware and leather goods. Numerous number of restaurants are also located inside the Grand Bazaar.
Souvenirs, textiles and clothings, Turkish ceramic and Turkish carpets can be recommended.
Prices are very much cheaper in the Grand Bazaar than those of other areas in Istanbul due to its competitiveness. Leave a Comment Theme: Local CraftAddress: Nuri Osmaniye, IstanbulDirections: Located at Nuri Osmaniye between Süleymaniye Mosque and Sultanahmet Square in Old Istanbul.

Istiklal Caddesi (Independence Avenue) is one of the most famous avenues in the heart of modern Istanbul. It begins from the Genoese neighbourhood around Galata Tower at Beyoglu District in the south and ends at Taksim Square in the north. It is a modern shopping district built in the 19th century. The street is approximately three kilometers long. The whole area resembles an open-air shopping mall! Galatasarey Square is located somewhere in the middle of Istiklal Caddesi. Istiklal Caddesi is dotted with lots of cafes, bars and restaurants especially local and international fastfood chains, cinemas, theaters, libraries, foreign embassies, banks, galleries, apartments and nightclubs. Lots of shopping opportunities await visitors at Istiklal Caddesi. Wide range of shops and stalls are located on the ground floors on both sides of the street such as those dealing in chic boutiques, music stores, car showrooms, bookstores, souvenir shops, shops dealing in antiques, carpets, copper and brasswares, clothing stores, textiles shops, fashion and designer shops etc. Large and medium size shopping malls also line the street. The pedestrian shopping street is visited by approximately three millions visitors a day especially during the weekends.
Antiques, souvenirs, gifts, books, clothings and Turkish products such as carpets and brassware.
As Istiklal Caddesi is an upmarket district, prices are a little bit more expensive that those in the Old Istanbul. Fruits on Büyükada by MalenaN The fruits look very inviting and are very tasty. Living in a country in the north I often eat imported fruits but never have the peaches and watermelons in Sweden tasted as the ones in Turkey. Take the chance and eat a lot of fruit of the season! Selekler Carsisi is one of the largest shopping malls in the heart of the city of Antalya. It is located at Cumhuriyet Caddesi near some of the best parks in the city with a tram line running along the street. There are three levels of shopping spaces for the convenience of shoppers. Wide range of items are available in the shopping center, most of them deal in household products, clothings and textiles, shoes and leather products such as handbags, travelling bags, belts and wallets. Entertainers such as gimmicks can be seen occasionally entertaining visitors outside Selekler Carsisi. Tourist information office is located within a stone's throw from the shopping center.
Clothings and textiles are highly recommended.
Prices of products can be expected to be a little bit more expensive due to the location of the shopping center. Sultan Bazaar Shopping Center is one of the largest shopping centers in Antalya. It is certainly one of the most beautiful shopping centers in Southern Turkey. This is an upmarket shopping center catering to mostly rich foreign tourists. It is located at Lara Kundu areas where many five stars hotels are located. The shopping center has approximately 70 shops. Cafes and restaurants are located on the lower ground floor. It was constructed in 2005 in Ottoman Selchuk style of architecture. The shopping center was opened to the public since 2005. It has three levels with approximately 13,000 square meters of shopping spaces. Business hours are between 9.00 a.m. and 11.30 p.m. daily. One of the most interesting shops we patronised at Sultan Bazaar is a well-known shop dealing in leather jackets on the ground floor facing the main road. It has two levels of shopping spaces with a basement. Wide range of wonderful and high quality jackets are on sale in the shop. Prices of genuine leather jackets range between 100.00 and 1,000.00 euros per piece. Free apple tea is served to customers while waiting for your jackets to be tried without any obligation at the basement. When you are tired of shopping, you may take a camel ride on a vacant plot on the right hand side of the shopping center. It costs just five euros per person per ride. It promises to be lots of fun!
Genuine leather jackets are highly recommended in a shop located on the front section of Sultan Bazaar Shopping Center.
Prices range from 100.00 to 1,000 euros per leather jacket. They are absolutely beautiful and of high quality. Grand Bazaar by deecat If you are claustrophobic, you would have a difficult time at the Grand Bazaar. It's like no other place that I have shopped. The experience is like being in a tunnel with objects on both sides and people everywhere. The noise level is quite high because the sales people are "hawking" their wares. Jayne and I had a "blast" here. We had specific items in mind to purchase and went straight for those items. Personally, I wanted to buy silver jewlery for a friend of mine. I was successful at obtaining the piece I wanted for the price I thought was fair...it's abartering paradise. Ironically, merchants seem insulted if you do not try to barter the price.
Interestingly, unlike America, gold is 18 and 22-24 carat in Turkey. You cannot even purchase 14 carat gold here. I think that the silver is softer here in Turkey than in America, but the workmanship quality is quite high. Lots of items are made of brass; for example, I saw a beautiful brass tea set. Scarfs, hats, leather jackets, leather purses, small pieces of furniture, and all kinds of clothing are available at reasonable prices.
In 1995, we paid about 20-35 % less for items than at home. Today, that would probably not be true because the dollar is weak right now. Leave a Comment Theme: OtherAddress: Istanbul

Lisa is trying a flying carpet by MalenaN In every town visited by tourists there are several carpet shops. In some places, like Selcuk, many pensions have their own shop. There are many nice carpets, kilims, sadlebags, saltbags etc. If your intension is to buy something it can be good to look around and only buy if you really like the item and know you will enjoy it at home (then you should not think of if you paid the right price or not). It's not often that I recommend a shop, but after spending hours talking to this shop's owner (over Turkish tea), I have to say this is a great place to shop, or even just stop for a chat. The owner, Hulya (Julia), is the only female shop owner in the area and specializes in custom made silver jewelry. She also speaks Japanese fluently, so Japanese tourists should definitely stop by for a look and a chat.
Silver jewelry, but there are also all the other typical Turkish souvenirs (scarves, ceramics, etc.). Leave a Comment Theme: GiftsAddress: Isabey Mh. N.Kemal Cd.
