Nazar Bonjuk: Evil Eye

by draguza

Nazar Bonjuk is a Turkish good-luck “evil eye” charm, born of the age-old “evil eye” superstition that one person can cast a spell on another. To prevent this, form millennia Anatolian artisans have created blue glass “eyes” that “look” straight back at the spell-caster as if to say “I see what you’re doing, and you can’t get away with it!”The Nazar Bonjuk (nah-ZAHR bohn-jook) has no religious significance, and few people really believe in the evil eye superstition anymore. But it’s such an enjoyable tradition, and a beautiful little piece of craft-art, that you’ll see Nazar Bonjuks all over Turkey.

Ali Pasha Bazaar: Fruit-shaped soaps of Edirne

by Arkeolog

Ali Pasha Bazaar is a traditional bazaar from ottoman times. There are full of shops in it and it is one of the popular place to visit for shopping in Edirne. Among the most popular gift items from Edirne are the fruit-shaped soaps. Manufactured since the 17th century, these soaps shaped like apples, bananas, pears, peaches, grapes, melons, cherries, etc and scented with musk, amber and rose are evidence that an old tradition is still alive. These fragrant fruit-shaped soaps were presented as gifts to the Ottoman sultans and also sent to the kings of foreign countries as gifts from the sultans. Today these colorful fruit-shaped soaps with their wonderful fragrances can be found throughout the city and are understandably popular.

Grand Bazaar, Istanbul: Large covered market

by hopang

The Grand Bazaar (Kapali Carsi in Turkish meaning the covered market) is located at Nuri Osmaniye in Old Istanbul. It is one of the largest covered markets in the world. It is also one of the oldest markets in the world as the building under one roof was constructed in the 15th century. Thus it has been an important trading centre since the 15th century!Grand Bazaar has approximately 4,000 shops and stalls with amazing 60 streets! It claims to be visited by approximately 300,000 visitors a day! It is such a huge building that it is easy to get lost inside the Grand Bazaar. The Grand Bazaar has four main gates. It covers a total area of approximately 30 hectares. The building has hundreds of domes which are covered with windows. It is undoubtedly a shopper's paradise. It is colourful and elegance and is considered a "must-visit" tourist attraction for any visitor who visits Istanbul.Wide...

Grand Bazaar: Need to see

by Clarchika

If I admit it was not something as I expected (was too modern perhaps). But still I would recommend you to check it out if you are in Istanbul. There are many local things selling there, from jewlery, cloths, carpets.. to spices. I wish I would check Egyptian Bazaar and Mahmutpasa Bazaar too, but may be next time!

all: `designer gear`

by kat-m

Turkey has no copyrite laws so of course the designer label is false, as long as you keep this in mind and haggle with the shopkeepers, then all should be ok. I paid about £4.00 for a very nice pair of `prada `sandals. A bargain!

Turkish Carpets

by Snipernurse

There are tons of Turkish Carpet shops throughout Turkey, and a carpet may be a very appealing purchase for you, so it's best to be advised, here are some of the things I learned while in Turkey of how to be a good carpet consumer. The first few carpet shops you go to, promise yourself not to buy a carpet. Instead ask the propriater to teach you about carpets. How the carpets are made, how you can identify which carpet is of high quality stitch and dyes. I learned that the tighter the knots, the higher the quality. To test this flip the carpet over and count the amount of knots in the length of space of about your thumb. A good carpet will have tighter knots and will have more knots in that space. You want at least 6 knots, and more expensive carpets will have even more than this. You should also ask the carpet salesman about the iconography and symbolism embedded into the carpets. There...
