Carpets

by Bavavia

In Turkey,, you can find very high quality leather, jewelry and carpets. Make sure you bargain, but bargain appropriately. Do not go too low that it is an insult. Know your prices and present a reasonable alternative to the merchant. They are always willing to listen and negotiate. be careful though, they try to take advantage of shoppers( see warnings page). Leather ( all styles, colors,), ceramics( beautiful hand crafted) , jewelry( beautiful styles with gems) and carpets. Make sure you know the general price and then try to bargain with about 1/2 of what they are asking or maybe a bit less and work from there. Although the leather is nice in many places, beware of the ultra thin leather they try to sell you. I bought a jacket for $ 200 ( they claim it was a good price, turns out was a total ripoff). The leather was so thin it just tore and couldnt be fixed. Just make sure its thick...

Carpet Shop: Handwoven Carpet

by faridah

We were shown how the carpet was woven and dyed. Very interesting and the carpets are very very very beautiful but it also very very very expensive. It takes years for the ladies to wove a big carpet so it is only right that it is expensive. And since it is expensive, it is only right that I cant buy them. : )The most expensive carpet shown to us was the Hereke, costs USD 37 000.I wont want anyone stepping on that carpet.. no way!

grand bazaar: do bargain and again!

by persian_hiker

I wondered that some of Turkish crafts were expensive from Iran, It was for texts (said K.D.V) for examples Turkish beer was 5 Y.T.L about 4$ in the beech and 3 Y.T.L in the markets. Fortunately I sell themes in my city about 2.2$ ļ in ground bazar you can find many of handcraft ,but you can find better ones in Iran ,Isfehan with better prices. Shops are very various, but you must bargain with them! In a leader store that presents a fashion show I brought a jacket from 250$ to 125$ ;-)

Souvenirs along the way

by Maxiediva

All throughout my trip, there are many small souvenir shops selling the Nazar Bonjouk or evil eyes, from Nevsehir to Izmir. These can go for as little as 1YTL, depending on your power of bargaining. You'll find many stores in the Grand Bazaar selling them too, but I'd strongly suggest getting them en route. Many things can be much cheaper in the suburbs than at the Grand Bazaar, such as old ladies crochets in Goreme. Lokums or Turkish delights are best purchased from a shop in Izmir called Artemis. Evil eyes, postcards at 1YTL for 12pcs, apple tea & lokums (from Artemis in Izmir), olive oil soaps, Figs, Pomergranate tea, more evil eyes as giveaways, hand-woven carpets from Yuksel Halicilik in Uchisar, ceramics from Guray Comlekcilik in Goreme (200yr history in ceramics), TURKIYE t-shirts, chocolates from Bolu (Koru hotel), old turquoise from Goreme onyx (if you have spare change),...

Shopping around Turkey

by Tijavi

I am not really a fan of shopping while traveling - I've shunned rugs and carpet stores in India, or skipped the trinket shops in Bali - but I love visiting markets for the sake of soaking up the atmosphere. Turkey is undoubted a shopper's paradise. Almost every town has its kapali carsi (grand bazaar), and visitors should not miss them. The funny thing about these markets is that Chinese-made goods compete alongside traditional favorites - globalization at its finest (or worst, depending on which side are you). Some unmissable "shopping" experience:1) Istanbul's Kapali Carsi is arguably Turkey's largest tourist trap, but you have to visit it for the sake of experience - to marvel at the beautiful carpets, feast your eyes on dazzling jewellery, and load up on some souvenirs. Getting lost in this maze of hundreds of shops is an experience by itself.2) Safranbolu's market - not a bit less...

Blue Beads (Nazar Boncugu)

by ozalp

You can find blues beads anywhere in Turkiye. Especially you have to look souvenir shops or jewelry shops. Blue bead is a strange thing. It is an object of superstition. We (actually many of us don’t) believe that gaze has a power. If someone looks to you with envy or grudge, something bad happens to you or your belongings. If the eyes are blue or green, they have more evil power. We use the bead as a protection against evil eye. I think (or I’d read it somewhere, I’m not sure) it collects the power of the gaze on itself and absorbs it. So we carry it on ourselves, put blue beads on our valuable belongings, our cars, houses... People put on blue beads especially when they are more beautiful, successful, rich or lucky than actual. Because success, beauty, richness cause envy.Too detailed explanation for a non-believer, but I must admit that I like these kind of beliefs. Actually there...

various: Carpets/Kilims

by PA2AKgirl

Believe me, you will not struggle to find a carpet or kilim seller. Finding one who isn't going to rip you off is another story. It depends on what you want and whatever style, pattern, make, size you desire-- it's out there. There’s everything from high traffic carpets to hand made kilims which are flatter and adhere more to traditional colors and patterns. Just don't settle on the first dealer you pass because in the highly visited area, the prices will be higher and from what we experienced, the quality lower. We asked a man about a little area rug we saw and he told us that it was made in eastern Turkey at a local factory and the knotting was finished by hand and original design. This "original" design was duplicated on the next rug down. Then we were offered a "better price" if we got 2 of them. Flipping it over, we found it wasn't at all made where he said it was...not that the...
