various: always a great gift!

by PA2AKgirl

I wish there was a general shopping tip option because most of mine are about items rather than specific stores. This one is no different. As many people know, Turkey has its own celebrated (an in my opinion, rather vile) liquor called Raki. If you want to get someone a present they may not care for but will appreciate, this is it. I know a LOT of people like it, but I don't care much for anise flavoring. But, hey, when I'm drinking I end up trying anything. Plus, it changes color when its mixed with water and when you're drinking, it's like a magic trick. There is also a lot of wine to choose from in Turkey and a more mainstream gift, I suppose. We purchased a few bottles when we were up in Cappadocia/Kapadokya and certainly enjoyed them. Yet another reason we have to go back--we're out;-) Wine. Raki (to say you did). And more wine. Then some Efes:D not a bad price at all...it varies,...

Yasar Art Glass: Art Glass

by PA2AKgirl

I had an idea of what I wanted to purchase when I went to Turkey...but it never occurred to me that aside from the amazing pottery, there would also be beautiful glass. We were walking by a place that sells eyeglasses and in the window, they had a little gallery of art glass on display so we walked in (eyeglasses, art glass...okay, it goes together). Each piece was incredible and such a good price that I picked up 3 different sized plates for us and then got more as presents for my brother. Later, I went to the website and was even more impressed. The colors, the shaping, the pieces they have are all so detailed and unique. You can order off the site, I believe but when I just checked it, the information on the English version wasn't coming up but I know it did in the past. I emailed the contact and they told me where their gallery was and other vendors. Very nice people. The do pack...

uh...fruit stand?: Buying fruit along the road

by PA2AKgirl

Like here in the US, in the southern and warmer part of Turkey, citrus and other fruits are grown. Giant bags of oranges and to a lesser extent, small bananas and lemons are sold along the highways. I saw these guys get some business, but it always seemed strange to me that you'd go for some time without seeing anyone and then a group of 2 or 3 together selling the same product. I don't know if they offered competive rates or if one was more willing to bargain with you, but I think they'd have more success spread out from each other a little bit. But if you're ever driving along and decide you need a ton of oranges, they are readily available. Oh, here you can also buy turnip juice but I've avoided that entirely. fruit. That would be my guess... in the true spirit of Turkey, I don't believe there's a set price

Goldmark Diamond & Gold Store: The Gold Experience

by tiggerdane

The think that makes this shop so special is the quality of everything they sell. Again as with most Turkish people they cannot do enough for your. You can even design your own piece and they will make it in either white, yellow, or rose gold and should you want a precious stone you can also purchase that. The owner of the shop is a gentleman called Nez and I can highly recommend him. He even came over to England this winter and brought out a bracelet that I had ordered. Anything gold, just ensure you go to a reputable dealer. These have the official registration certificate in the shops.

Egyptian Spice Bazaar: Turkish Delight

by batgirl1001

We found the best Turkish Delight at the Egyptian Spice Bazaar at an unbeatable price of 6-10 YTL per kg. The Spice Bazaar is really wonderful and there are many interesting, exotic spices on for sale and the aroma can be quite fetching. There is a popular coffee store that sells aromatic Turkish coffee and the smell is very tantalising. Long queues attest to the fact that it is very popular with locals. We found many kinds of fresh Turkish delight and they all look wonderful. Proprientors of the shop will let you sample the delights in the hope of you buying more. Ask them to vacuum pack the boxes to ensure that the freshness is sealed. The Spice Bazaar can be a more interesting market because it is where the locals do their 'real shopping' and it is often busy during the evenings. Prices are somewhat lower than the touristy Grand Bazaar, although the range is also more limited at the...

Grand Bazaar - Istanbul: Shopping and pleasing yr team of collegues

by Luchonda

Shopping and pleasing yr collegues to bargain on this international market located at the border between Europe an the Eastern orient. The oldest and biggest closed bazaar in the world, has around 4000 shops and over 60 alleyway, covering a huge labyrinth in the city centre. It is the place to be for shopping - you can find almost everything - and it is a sport to bargain or handle with the turkish vendors. The Paperrazzia team (esp.the ladies) had a problem choosing the gifts and bargain the price, but we catched the waiting bus for the hotel, just in time. (Look at my I.page) Leather, juwelry - almost everything Euro and cash

Buy outside Istanbul

by mike7990

This is a general note that shopping for items in Istanbul is expensive relative to other parts of the country (granted I only went to Goreme, Pamukkale and Selcuk, all tourist areas.) I found that Istanbul was more expensive, so if you can hold off buying it there, I would recommend doing so.

The Grand Bazaar: Hectic, Dramatic, Overwhelming Shopping Experience

by deecat

If you are claustrophobic, you would have a difficult time at the Grand Bazaar. It's like no other place that I have shopped. The experience is like being in a tunnel with objects on both sides and people everywhere. The noise level is quite high because the sales people are "hawking" their wares.Jayne and I had a "blast" here. We had specific items in mind to purchase and went straight for those items. Personally, I wanted to buy silver jewlery for a friend of mine.I was successful at obtaining the piece I wanted for the price I thought was fair...it's abartering paradise. Ironically, merchants seem insulted if you do not try to barter the price. Interestingly, unlike America, gold is 18 and 22-24 carat in Turkey. You cannot even purchase 14 carat gold here. I think that the silver is softer here in Turkey than in America, but the workmanship quality is quite high.Lots of items are...

Turkish Delight

You have to try these! At first I thought they looked very artificial and chemical, but they're actually made of natural ingredients. They all have their own tastes and ingredients, so you should try different kinds. My personal favorites are the ones with pistachio nuts.

Kurukahveci Mehmet Efendi: Turkish Coffee

by paradise42

Established in 1871, this specialty shop sells only Turkish coffee. I think they also sell accessories for making the coffee. Just look for the long line of customers buying coffee from the shop's windows. Of course, you should buy some coffee at this shop. Ask for a copy of directions for making the coffee in the traditional way. You can make additional copies if needed. I bought several small bags of coffee which made excellent gifts for friends and family back home. Each bag has enough to make about 8 cups of coffee. (Tell recipients of the coffee to use a Melitta type, v-shaped filter for better more effective preparation.) Each bag cost only about 1 USD. These were both economical and easy-to-pack souvenirs.
