Village Cooperative - no shop: Sognali Dolls

by paradise42

About forty years ago, doll-making became a cottage industry in this small village. We came across some women in Sognali (pronounced so-wang'-lee) who seemed to belong to a cooperative. Their attractive display of goods was set up in the town square. Sognali women make distinctive dolls that are outfitted with colorful flared dresses and pantaloons. The dolls are ideal souvenirs or gifts for young girls. They're light and pack well. We bargained and paid the equivalent of $1.50 for a beautiful doll. These same dolls can often be found in gift shops in the cities at much higher prices.

Fruits

by MalenaN

The fruits look very inviting and are very tasty. Living in a country in the north I often eat imported fruits but never have the peaches and watermelons in Sweden tasted as the ones in Turkey.Take the chance and eat a lot of fruit of the season!

Moon Light Souvenir's Silver Shop: Silver jewelry in Selcuk

by His_Beloved

It's not often that I recommend a shop, but after spending hours talking to this shop's owner (over Turkish tea), I have to say this is a great place to shop, or even just stop for a chat. The owner, Hulya (Julia), is the only female shop owner in the area and specializes in custom made silver jewelry. She also speaks Japanese fluently, so Japanese tourists should definitely stop by for a look and a chat. Silver jewelry, but there are also all the other typical Turkish souvenirs (scarves, ceramics, etc.).

Carpets

by MalenaN

In every town visited by tourists there are several carpet shops. In some places, like Selcuk, many pensions have their own shop. There are many nice carpets, kilims, sadlebags, saltbags etc. If your intension is to buy something it can be good to look around and only buy if you really like the item and know you will enjoy it at home (then you should not think of if you paid the right price or not).

Turkish Delight

by Dxenion

Want a special treat to take home for family and friends?Buy some turkish delight from any bazaar. Generally speaking, it'll be fresh made that morning and you wont believe the range of available flavours.I bought some rose flavoured delight for a friend and they told me they never knew that it was supposed to melt in your mouth. They said after trying authentic delight, the commercially available chocolate covered bar had an almost rubbery texture.Tell the vendor that you're travelling internationally and they'll pack your selection accordingly for no extra charge so it'll pass quarantine in your arrival destination. For travellers arriving in Australia with Delight in their luggage - don't be surprised if Australian Quarantine (AQIS) want to have a closer look at it. The officer who checked my gear was debating with his pals as to whether they should let me have it because it looked...

Treat yourself in Turkey

by bugalugs

We had a certain amount of time to wander around the shops. This was certainly an experience. We had never been anywhere like it before. The sun was beating down on us, and the local shopkeepers were trying to entice us to buy their goods. My mum loved it all, the banter and bargaining that went on. In fact a lady who was on her own on our cruise wanted to buy a leather coat and my mum did the bargaining for her. The only problem was that you could only spend a certain amount of money abroad at that time and the coat exceeded it. This lady was a nervous wreck travelling home.

Many jewelry shops is southern/southwestern Turkey: The Puzzle Ring

by JAFA-Rease

Legend has it that long ago a prince had a wife he didn't trust to be faithful. So, he had a special puzzle ring made up. The ring, when taken off of your finger, will fall apart if you aren't very careful. The ring is also a fairly challenging puzzle. Just ask SABSI, she still hasn't figured out how to put it together. But it wasn't for a lack of effort ; )... You won't be able to find the puzzle rings in all jewelry shops, but if you're anywhere near Adana you can find one. They come in many variations; 4 band, 6 band, 8 band, gold, silver, and some form a rose on top when they are together. Depending on what type any where from $10 - $400.

at any of the shops: You're not obligated

by JAFA-Rease

It is customary for Turkish shop owners to give you something to eat or drink when you enter their shop. Please do accept. They hope you will, but it does not mean you are expected to actually buy anything. They are just being curteous, or they have an empty shop and want others to walk by and see you in their shop. The logic being that, if there are customers in their shop others will come too and maybe buy something.

What to buy?

by dr.firas

Oh what to buy in Turkey, that is a very ridiculous question, there are plenty of gifts and presents and souvenirs which you can buy in any Turkish City, not mentioning Ankara of course, as the capital should be the first to think about in the choice to buy, great toys, Turkish folkloric gifts, Carpets, water pipes, material, wooden souvenirs, and lots more.Shopping is really fun in Ankara.
