Simena

by al2401

The history of this village goes back to 4th century BC. It was once a city of Lycia - there is actually a sarcophagus out in the bay and a necropolis on the hill. There are the ruins of a medieval fortress on the top of a hill behind the town. Within these ruins can be found the remains of an ancient temple. There is also a small Lycian theatre. Simena is situated on a beautiful and safe natural harbour and is best approached by boat from Ucagiz (where the yacht harbour is situated). You can spend hours wandering the twisting streets or climb to the top of the fortress (care must be taken as you reach the top). The views are spectacular - even on a rainy day! A trip to Kekova is also warranted. The area is best seen as a day trip from Kas.Simena is the name for the ancient town. The modern name is Kaleköy but it is commonly referred to as Simena.

Kekova

by al2401

Kekova Island is across the bay from Simena and Ucagiz. Here you can see the sunken ruins of a residential part of old Simena which was submerged by an earthquake in the 2nd century. These are best seen as part of a boat trip around the bay - either a day trip or or a longer stay. Boats can be rented from Kas, Ucagiz or Simena.

Kas

by al2401

Kas is a lovely town with beautiful bays and inlets. The houses are painted white and have colourful flowers such as Bougainvillea hanging from their balconies which contrast well with the blue of the sea. Being in the centre of the ancient Lyicia there are Lycian sarcophagi in the middle of the streets. The Greek island of Megisti is only 4 miles away.Kas is a great place to make your base for visits to Myra, Kekova, Simena and Ucagiz.

Underground Treasure

by cheerssweetie

The Basilica Cistern was built in the 6th Century by the Roman Emperor Justinian in order to provide water for the city. This is a great place to spend half an hour especially during the hot summer months as it is beautiful and cool.Make sure you walk right around the raised wooden platforms to the back left hand corner where you will find a coloum supported with an upside down Medusa head. There is a cafe as you exit and on entry you can play dress ups as a sultan and queen and have your photo taken.Entry is TLR 10.00 and is open from 9am to 7.30pm

Cappadocia

by cachaseiro

Cappadocia is out of this world. It's among the most amazing places on this earth with weird and wobderful rock formations shaped by ancient vulcanic erutions. The area is quite big and you should set aside several days to explore the area if you have the time for it.It´s both a natural aswell as a cultural destination and you should do your uttermost to visit this place. The biggest must see in turkey i would say.

Antalya

by cachaseiro

The turkish south coast is generally very touristy, but Antalya is big enough to still have a very turkish atmosphere. The old harbour is very nice to hang around both during day and night time.Antalya is also the point of entry of most flights to southern Turkey, so you are likely to end up there at some point if you travel to that part of Turkey. If you decide to stay there for the night then i highly recommend the old part of town and not the beach part outside Antalye which is very touristy and not that interesting if you ask me.

Istanbul

by solopes

A bridge between two continents this immense city is a rich combination of cultures and civilizations. Original and adapted monuments of several epochs and religions are spread all over [http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/9eab8/1c0a38/]Istanbul, with a special care in everything that borders the narrow sea. A very beautiful city that I couldn't see deeply in the two days of my first visit but that i saw better this time during a week. Tips will come slowly (I still have dozens to post from somewhere else).

Alanya Castle, Alanya

by hopang

Alanya Castle is located on top of the rocky peninsula that divides the city of Alanya. The castle has a seven kilometre long city fortificatuions and is approximately 250 metres above sea level. The Red Tower below the hill forms part of the Alanya Castle. This is a "must-visit" castle which has a spectacular view of the city and harbour. You may take a taxi or dolmus up the hill from the foothill or you can also take a 45 minute walk up the hill and enjoy the view at different height. The construction of Alanya Castle dates back to the first century AD but most of the castle were constructed in the 13th century under the reign of Seljuk Sultan Alaeddin Kay Qubadh I. Today the castle is an open-air museum and much of the castle is opened to the public.

Konya - Mevlana Museum

by ant1606

Located in the Anatolia region, the city of Konya is a settlement with 5,000 years of history. One among the most important features of Konya is the Mevlana Museum, actually the mausoleum of the Persian-born, Sufi poet Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi also known as Mevlana. A visit to this sacred venue is an extraordinary experience to see, among precious books and artifacts, a box containing the Holy Beard of Muhammad. It is here that the order of the "Whirling Dervishes" was founded, whose original seminar is part of the museum complex.
