Hagia Sophia, Istanbul

by hopang

Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya in Turkish, also known as the Church of the Holy Wisdom) is located at Sultanahmet Square within a stone's throw from the Blue Mosque in Old Istanbul. It was constructed in 537 AD during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I as a patriachal basilica and was designed by Isidore and Anthemius in Byzantine style of architecture. It was the largest cathedral in the world for more than 900 years until the early 16th century when Sultan Mehmed II converted it into an Ottoman mosque and stayed as a mosque for almost 500 years. It is one of the greatest surviving examples of Byzantine architecture. Hagia Sophia is considered as one of the greatest buildings in the world!Hagia Sophia was converted into Ayasofya Museum in 1935 by Atatürk. It has large collections of holy relics. The interiors are decorated with richly artistic mosaics and are supported by giant marble...

GALLIPOLI NATIONAL PARK

by neodue

Here is the one of the Important place to see in Turkey.A monument of the near past of The world and Turkey.you can check the web page of national park for getting an idea and in the web page check the map how huge that area .You can do 1 day tour but 8 hour go and return istanbul and the tour will be in rush and you will see just a commercial tour. I recommend to you go to Canakkale 1st day stay there and go to Gallipoli. it is a peninsula not a town or village.you need to visit lots of village and place to see and understand and cry. If you hire a car that would be better.in the middle of the peninsula there is a information centre you can make your plan and you can visit the places. cemeteries, battlefields, monuments, villages it is a world. for example if you just visit a cemetery of ANZAC this is just visiting a ANZAC cemetgery in Turkey. you need all they tour to get the wiew.I tell...

Micro-Madness

by mymannsmilie

If you want to do something different this next holiday we recommend micro-liting we went with Fly South we enjoyed the experience so much we did it twice. We contacted Ivor the rep for fly south through the hotel reception, as we had already heard of a couple who had been with them for the first time and they told us of their wonderful experience, we booked for Ivor to come came and explained where you go, what you will see, and he's scared of rollercoaster rides so you do feel a bit better knowing hes been up, He won't sell anything unless he's tried it he said. We had the the firms driver pick us up from our hotel an hour later and we were up in the air only a short while later and boy what a feeling. The Microlite is a bit like a bike with wings and the pilots both Cal or Oscar have a seat in the front, you sit in a seat right behind them and it feels so comfortable, a bit like a baby...

Istanbul - Blue Mosque

by mad4travel

The Blue Mosque was founded by Sultan Ahmet I, constuction began in 1609 and the whole complex was completed in 1616. it was the first Mosque to have 6 minarets. The architect Mehmed wanted to construct a bigger dome then Hagia Sophia'sopposite, but he could'nt do it. Instead, he made the mosque splendid by the perfect proportion of domes and semidomes as well as the splendid minarets. You have to remove your shoes as you go inside and ladies have to cover their heads as a mark of respect (although I did see lots of western tourists not doing this)Inside the mosque is just fabulous. Its gets its name Blue Mosque from the blue tiles used inside.Note the Mosque is closed for 1 - 1.5 hours during prayers (which can vary in time during the day as the times follow the suns position.)

Istanbul - Inside the Blue Mosque

Ankara - Old town and citadel

by mad4travel

Ankara is about as European as Turkey gets. There are touches of the mystical east if you know where to look but the vast majority of the city is 20th century through and through. Ankara is a huge university town and you'll find the streets of Kizilay and the bars of Sakarya thronged with students for most of the year.Capital city status and the presence of language schools and the above mentioned universities has brought a sizeable ex pat community to Ankara and all this adds to the western feel of the place. The citadel is thought to be one of the oldest places in ankara. It is thought the area was orginally occupied by the Hittites around 4000-1200bc.The foundations of the citadel were laid by the Galatians on a prominent lava outcrop, and completed by the Romans; the Byzantines and Seljuks made restorations and additions. The area around and inside the citadel is the oldest part of...

Ankara - Ataturks tomb

by mad4travel

Kamal Ataturk is the founding father of modern Turkey. As befitting a national hero, his tomb and monument are on the grandest scale. In 1915, he emerged as a military hero at the Dardenelles-Gallipoli and later became the leader of the Turkish national liberation struggle in 1919. In 1923, as the creator of the new Republic of Turkey, Atatürk established a form of government that reflected the wishes of the people thru the Parliament. Sweeping cultural and socio-political reforms took place. Between 1926 and 1930, legal changes led the way for Islamic religious laws to be abolished and a secular system emerged. Atatürk initiated a program for economic development in Turkey, which consisted of agricultural expansion, industrial and technological advances. Determined not to stop there, Atatürk undertook the greatest challenge of all - a reform of the existing language - In 1928, he decided...

Istanbul

by Niekie

At the entrance to the Black Sea, Istanbul obviously sits at a very strategic position; which is exactly why people came to inhabit this area as early as they did. Having been around for three thousand years, the city is bequeathed with many treasures. Many are located close to each other in the old part of the city called Sultanahmet: the Aya Sofia, Blue Mosque, Topkapi palace, Hippodrome, Basilica Cistern. Other Istanbul must sees are the Grand Bazaar, Egyptian spice market, and the area around the Galata bridge and Galata Tower.
