The Anit Kabir in Ankara

by Paul2001

The Anit Kabir is more famously known mausoleum of Ataturk or Mustafa Kemal. For those who have yet to visit Turkey, Ataturk is the first president the new Republic of Turkey. He was also a general of superior ability who was largely responsible for the defeat of the Allies in Gallipoli and the Greeks in the Turkish War of Independence. I do not have enough room to go into more detail and do Ataturk justice but he was quite simply one of the most important world leaders of the 20th century and certainly the most decisive figure in modern Turkish history. His picture is posted everywhere. Be on guard and do not talk negatively of him if you do not want to offend the Turks. I did not know what to expect when visiting the mausoleum. The Anit Kabir is located on a large hill and the grounds are immaculately maintained. Most visitors are likely to approach the tomb via the Anit Cad. Part of...

St. Peter's Church in Antakya

by midnight_mike

The surprising thing about one of Christianity's most sacred sights is that it gets few visitors. When I visited St. Peter's Church, there was no one else there. The church is a cave naturally carved out of the mountains. It was a secret meeting place for early Christians. While residing in Antioch from 47-54 A.D, St. Peter preached and taught in the cave. It is now recognized as being Christianity's first church. The apostles Paul and Barnabas were also among the group of early Christians who preached there. One of the key features of the cave was a tunnel which provided an escape route in case of danger. The small tunnel, which still exists, leads upward about 50 feet above the church. There is also a natural spring inside the cave. When the Crusaders captured Antioch in 1098, they built the external facade seen today. Other additions included an altar and a mosaic tile floor. The only...

Tandem Paraglide

by Arabhorseygirl

If you visit Olu Deniz there is one thing you can't leave without doing ...A tandem Paraglide.I took this photo looking down on my partner and Olu Deniz resort. We went with Eagles, (now called something else as the pet Eagle died!) at a cost of £55. We were in the air for 45 minutes. The cost consists of separate insurance from your own travel insurance and entry to Babadag National park. The park is not run by the paragliding companies themselves so they include it in your price. Shop around as they do vary from £55 on the beach front to £90 with the Reps. This will be the best oportunity to see Olu Deniz in all its glory not to mention a once-in-a-lifetime experience! The Mavi Belce hotel entrance is marked with a red dot (around the middle of the picture). An excellent, good value-for-money base for a holiday in Olu Deniz (see www.mavibelcehotel.com or book with Airtours Small and...

Eternal flames

by JenniferG

About 15 minutes of driving from Olympos there are the amazing eternal flames called Chimera. There's gas coming through the rocks and it keeps on burning and never dies out. They organize trips from the treehouse camps every night. Make sure you bring a flashlight with you as you have to walk a dark, rocky path going up to the flames.

by Weener

Take the dolmus to the local beaches. Bitez is about 6 miles away from Bodrum, a popular resort for the Dutch and Irish. Quaint little resort, relatively quiet, with a long stretch of sandy beach, and many beach side restaurants to choose from for lunch. All the sunbeds on the beach were free of charge, situated outside restaurants, to encourage you to eat or drink from them by getting beach service, without even leaving your sun lounger! Watersports are available, particularly popular with windsailing.

by Weener

Its worth going to a Turkish night if you get the opportunity. In Bodrum there is the Kervan Saray, booked through travel agents. It’s a good night out if you are with a group of people. Big of selection of Turkish Meze’s, although the main course is not great. All alcoholic local drinks are included in the price.

The Archaeology Museum in Bergama

by Paul2001

One of the bigger surprises I had while touring Turkey was the superb Archaeology Museum in Bergama. The museum is fairly large for such a small city as Bergama but it really should not be such a shock that the museum as a collection of such quality, Pergamum is just 3km away. Many of the artefacts that are displayed here are from there. Others are from Allianoi, another archaeological site near Bergama but this one is about to disappear thanks to a new dam. The museum's collection is extremely well displayed and is located in a pleasant modern building in the centre of Bergama. The museum cost $2.50 to visit and is open from 8:30 to 5:30 daily.

Boat Trip

by tiggerdane

Another must is a boat trip, which you can either book in the village of Hisoranu as there are many tour operators, or maybe book through your hotel. The boat takes you to many of the small islands and stops at many to let you swim in the deep blue sea.Lunch is served on the boat and refreshments are available for the whole of the trip. The most I have paid for the boat trip is £10, and well worth every penny.

Ghost town

by tiggerdane

Another visit must be to Kaya the Ghost town. You can either walk there or take a taxi. If you decide to walk, do take a bottle of water as it is quite a way, but nevertheless quite pleasant. A taxi will cost you somewhere in the region of £5.Once you get down there you can wander around the ghost town and it isn't difficult to imagine how things were. Don't worry about refreshments you can get them there too.

Istanbul more than one and thousand Nights

by cancon

Signs of renewed self-confidence are everywhere. The city is still thickly atmospheric, with bazaars, Byzantine churches and Ottoman mansions pretty much everywhere. But that faded grandeur has recently been leavened with new energy. Stock markets are surging. Young, Western-educated Turks are returning home to start businesses. Foreigners are snapping up choice real estate. Turkish painters, writers, musicians, fashion designers and filmmakers are increasingly in the international spotlight. Two major new private museums devoted to Turkish art, the Istanbul Modern and the Pera Museum, have opened in the past year alone. Private galleries like GalerIst and Platform are showcasing, and fostering, new artists from Turkey and around the region.
