Ephesos

by nepalgoods

One of the most impressive cities of the classical Antique. Ephesos' harbour was very important until about 500. after that the harbour filled more and more with sand. Today Ephesos is about 8 km away from the sea. The remains of a splendig theatre and the ruins of many temples are wonderfully exccavated and preserved. To walk around in this ancient city gives you an impression of the life of people 2000 years ago.

Amazing blue cruise

by JenniferG

One of the most relaxing things to do is going on a blue cruise! You will go in four days from Fethiye to Olimpos. This trip is so beautiful! You will visit the beach from the Blue Lagoon movie, lagoons you can only reach by boat, lagoons and more lagoons! You will sleep 2 nights in small bays and 1 night in the harbour from Kas.If you're lucky you can see dolphins, huge sea turtles and flying fish! The water is so clear that you can see the bottom even when it's 7 meters deep! You're forced to enjoy nature and just relax! The settings are gorgeous!

About an hour from Kalkan is Kas

by rachel_sun

About an hour from Kalkan is Kas.Kas is simalar to Kalkan,a small harbour town which comes to life at night. There are loads of decent bars cafe's and restaurants to choose from.My mum and i caught a taxi here and checked the shops out.It took about i hour and cost£10.The shops here were very good and i spent millions(ha ha).Kalkan and Kas are nice during the day because alot of tourists head for the beach and the streets are deserted, which was great when i wanted to shop til i dropped. If you like a tasteful and quiet place, with no tacky cheap tourist shops,do come to Kas and Kalkan. More Info: Here is Xanthos and the tombs and theater. It was demolished in a e arthquake. Here are some great web pages that i found very useful and informative, with loads of good advice and tips on Turkey.:

Sıcak Çikolata Masaji at Tulip Spa

by VanessaRaney

I had a hot chocolate massage at the Tulip Spa of the Titanic Port Hotel in Bakırköy, İstanbul. This masaji may not be unique for Europe - maybe not even the U.S. - but it was my first ever! Don't worry, it's not real sıcak çikolata; but if you're looking for a different experience, why not?Cost (in Jan. 2011): Up to 200TL

Dur Yolcu

by al2401

This is not a 'Things to do' but more of an explanation of a thing that you see. The following information was sent to me by VT member 'Sirvictor' to contribute to Gallipoli page. I thought it deserved a page of its own.If you enter the Strait of Dardanelles from Aegean Sea you will see on the right the Hills of Canakkale and on the left the Gallipoli Peninsula. On the Hills of Canakkale you will notice a warning in capital letters coloured with white chalk " Halt Traveller!" This warns all people who desire to enter the Dardanelles without permission. In March 18th 1915 British and French tried to enter the Dardanelles without permission and paid their desire with blood and heavy losses. After that bloody fight a Turkish poet called Necmettin Halil Onan wrote the following poem. The poem is translated into English by Tanwir Wasti. published by the March 18th University Magazine 2003To a...

Turkey

by euskaldun

In my opinion, you should start from Van and then head west. The weather is unpredictable, but eastern Turkey is very mountainous and snow can block some mountain passes even as early as November (some years also October). You should keep that in mind particularly if you intend to visit Nemrut Dagi, that remains closed since the first snows until late spring. If you only intend to drive on the main roads, then snow will not be a concern. You do not mention what attractions you are interested in around the coastal areas, but both October and November are not beach season. However, the tourist sites remain all year round, and you will be able to find accommodation. Also, the weather will be more clement in November than up in the highlands.

Goreme by Hot Air Balloon

by al2401

The countryside around Goreme is fascinating and even more so when seen from the high in the air or down among the weird shapes. Dawn is always the best time for ballooning and the 'firing up' of the burner is more spectacular in the half light. There are many companies offering flights - with or without breakfast, champagne or other wise but the view is the same for all. I went up with Kapadokia Balloons who give excellent service. We only had our celebratory breakfast when we had all helped to deflate and store the balloon - which is an experience in itself.

Bosphorus Cruise

by ares19a

Me and friends joined a full day Bosphorus Boat Cruise last August and we now believe that it is the best way to explore the city of Istanbul with this cruise. They came and picked us up from our hotel and we drove to the port after collection some more people from other hotels. We got on the but, not a very big one but quite big enough for a medium size of group. Then we followed up the European cost line all the way up Sariyer, very close by the cost so that we could see everything in details and take lots of pictures and the came back following the Asian side this time. It took about two and a half hour to get back to the same place where we started but the cruise still did not end. We then went on Golden Horn, the part of Bosphorus dividing European part into two. We crossed under three bridges as watching Fener and Balat districts, these places were occupied by Greek and Armanian...

Yerebatan cistern - Istanbul

by al2401

During the Byzantine era there were not enough sources of water inside the city walls. Water from sources in the forests of Belgrade was directed into some sixty cisterns built in Istanbul. The Yerebatan Cistern is the biggest of these, holding about 80 megalitres of water which was delivered through the Valens Aquaduct. It was used until the 16th century and restored in the mid 19th century. The restoration work was completed in 1987 and the cistern was opened to the public. At the back of the cistern there are two Medusa heads used as bases to columns. One is upside down, the other sideways. Scenes from the James Bond movie 'From Russia with Love' were filmed here.
