Tourist Ferries

by ophiro

There are deals from the hotels and also people in the pier that are selling trips to the islands and the bosphorus for a lot of money - 20-30USD ! If you went to a tourists' boat at least enjoy the view and have fun. Find a local ferry - it is not hard to find in Eminonu , Kadikoy , besikas and more and it will be cheaper.A ferry to the prince's islands cost us 2 YTL from eminonu.A ferry to the black sea costs us 7.5 YTL from Besitas. From Besiktas to Uskudar it cost us 0.75 YTL.From Eminonu to Kadikoy it cost us 1 YTL.So figure out yourself how much you save !

Taxi Drivers

by ophiro

Taxi drivers will try sometimes to get an extra money for the ride - for example to tell you a sum of money instead of running the meter , to take you in circles to get more meter time. Always know where you are going even if you don't know the exact route try to remember names that you are passing on your way.Always ask for a meter and check if the word "GUNDUZ" is written (this is morning and it is until midnight) or GECE (after midnight). You can try to go to another taxi driver more trustworthy , try a ferry or Dolmus.

Topkapi Palace

by mike7990

This is not quite a tourist trap matter, but it may save you money based on your preferences. When you buy your ticket to the Palace you have the option to buy a ticket to go to the Treasury in addition. When you get inside the Palace you have the option then of buying a ticket to see the Harem. If you are not on a budget, then buy both. But if you are on a budget, it's good to know what you are buying. Personally, I love the Harem and thought it was worth the extra admission. The place is beautiful. The Treasury was nice but not for me. So know what you like before you buy all those extra tickets. If you like impressive jewels and such, then you will like the Treasury. But I still think the Harem is better.

Grand Bazaar, Istanbul

by cas_twemlow

The Grand Bazaar is so huge you can't miss it! Over 4,000 shops selling everything from hanbags and shoes to carpets and Turkish delight. I can't remember what tram stop it's on, but ask anyone and they'll tell you. If you're staying in Istanbul it is walkable from almost anywhere. Omigod! This is bargain hunters paradise and shoppers heaven on earth! I have been sucked in both times I have visited Istanbul....but I can't help it! I LOVE IT!! It is truly a dream come true and everything is dirt cheap - even though the locals tell you it's the biggest rip off in Turkey (apparently, there are WAY cheaper markets and bazaars that you can visit but none as much fun as the Grand Bazaar). I have bought half my house there - leather foot poufs, mosaic candle lanterns, ceramic dishes, tiles, Louis Vuitton bags, leather jackets, shoes etc etc. You name it, I've bought it. I know they might say...

Bazaar

by T-H

Take care with buying a leather jacket on the Bazaar. Some are no good quality. It may be that if it rained you think a sheep is following you, cause it begins smelling. Go to an official and good leather store. It's cheap enough and you get a 3 years garanty.

shopping

by cullimar

again its just about the shopping, be prepared to haggle for a price, they will give you a figure way over the price, stand your ground on what you feel is enough, chances are you will get it cheaper somewhere else anyway.

Folkloric Trap

by paradise42

Tourists are often attracted to folkloric programs that feature ethnic music and dance. We eagerly signed up for an optional activity that included a roast lamb dinner and show at Sarikaya Restaurant in Avenos. Not only was the food just mediocre, but the folkloric performance was amateurish and uninteresting; even the belly dancer was lousy. Worst of all, the price was $35 per person! We found out too late that there was an annual Festival of Culture and Tourism that takes place in the Hagia Sophia Square in Istanbul during the last two weeks in August. Nightly performances by different professional musicians and dancers cover a wide range - from the Whirling Dervishes to tribal Uigar music. The best part is that the performances, that begin at 9:00 p.m., are free to the public! Inquire at any Tourist Office for a schedule of events.

The Grand Bazaar

by paradise42

Almost every tourist in Istanbul makes a beeline to The Grand Bazaar (Kapalicarsi in Turkish). It is purported to be the largest covered market in the world with 4,400 shops, 64 streets, 25,000 employees, its own police station, mosques and hamams or Turkish baths. In the past, each street was reserved for a different profession and the handicrafts produced were rigorously controlled. Now many of the old trades only remain as street names. The main streets of the Bazaar are lined with souvenir shops selling curios, candies, jewelry, etc. The employees/owners of every business will attempt to lure you into their store where they will relentlessly try to get you to buy something. Even if you ignore them, they will continue to badger you with their endless sales pitches. We found this shopping environment to be needlessly stressful (and unbearably hot in August). After about 10 minutes,...

Mausoleum of Halicarnassus in Bodrum

by Paul2001

Just because it is one of the seven wonders of the world does not mean that you have to visit it. That is the way that I feel about the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus in Bodrum. This is because there is little remaining of this 4th century B.C. monument to see. This is because of the multitude of tomb robbers and earthquakes that devastated the ground of the mausoleum over the centuries. Nothing is left but the foundations in the form of a great big pit. The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus was originally built by the wife of the Carnia king, Mausolus who actually designed the structure himself. He was entombed here after he died. The mausoleum was built in the form of a huge white marble step pyramid. The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus derives its name from the town of Halicarnassus, that was sited here before the Bodrum arose from the ruins. The mausoleum does have a beautiful garden and some...

Americans pay more!

by His_Beloved

I found out (from one of my Turkish stalkers) that generally Americans end up paying more than other tourists, so it's best to lie and tell people you are from Canada (or some other English speaking country). So when someone asks you "where are you from?" it's more likely they are asking because they want to guess how much money they can get out of you, than any real interest of your nationality.
