Real Leather ??

by globetrott

When travelling through Turkey we came to Antalya and I saw a really cheap portemonnaie / purse in the bazar and I took a smell in order to find out, if it was real leather - and the smell was 100% leather...and I had a look at something that was printed on the purse - and it also said 'real leather' - and then I bought it for 2 or 3 $ - but the nice merchant told me : This purse is made of PLASTIC, produced by a COMPANY named REAL LEATHER and sprayed with a spray, that gives customers the feeling to buy real leather.I bought it anyway and I still have it somewhere, and maybe I will scan it one day...

Shopping!

by Monique_T

We love going to the markets in Turkey. But ofcourse when they see you are a tourist some people try to take advantage of it. Most things are not expensive at all so we always ended up buying way too much. It is normal to try to get a bit of the price, but sometimes they can get really mad when you try to get a very good bargain. Don't worry about that, there are more with the same stuff.

Not a trap, just a bit of advice.Turkish currency is in millions, at time of writing, £1 = 2,300,000 TL. Count the zero’s on your Turkish Lira! It may sound and look daft, but its very easy to mistake a 10,000,000 TL note for 1,000,000 TL note.

by B.P.Newton

I read the same story in all the travel books. DON'T GET A TAB IN A BAR. We were only there for 1 drink and got stung for US$600. Better than the US$3500 they tried to get us for. Always pay for any drinks when you buy them and never accept platers of fruit. We questioned the bill and were led down stares to the basement and the made us take out all our money. When we came up short, we were search and our wallets were gone through. All cards got swiped, even gym membership cards. With 10 security outside the door, you end up signing on the doted line. Always travel with at least 1 other person and never get lured into the trap of a Turkish guy asking if there is anywhere good to go out. He will definately be part of a scam and you will eventually end up loosing a lot of money.

The carpet sellers ! A cliche , I know, but almost every organised trip seems to end in a visit to a local carpet factory. Beautiful and well-priced they may sometimes be, but not everyone's favourite way to spend a hot afternoon .

Shopping. Carpet Dealers. Now don't get me wrong I love shopping and Turkey can be a shoppers dream come true, but you must be careful, because the merchants over there will go to extreme measures to seperate you from your money. Spend a day looking around and figure out what you want to get in Turkey, they figure out how much you are willing to spend. If the merchant doesn't want to meet your price or is being too pushy WALK AWAY! You are not obliged to buy anything. Also if someone comes up and starts harassing you on the street about a carpet or anything else Ignore them and keep walking. There are a lot of people selling thing on the street, just tell them no and keep waking. I swear sometimes you can't take three steps without being asked to buy something. It will take a bit to get used to, but once you get in the practice of ignoring them it is very easy to brush them off. Remember...

So there I was walking the streets of Sultanahment looking for a feed and I came across a place not far from the tram stop where lamb was advertised for an inexpensive price so, in I went and ordered and, then, got what I ordered - lamb. Nothing else, just lamb. Even though on the picture outside vegetables were indicated, the price was for lamb only.

at the beachresorts there is lots of little kids walking around trying to give you things and then asking you large amounts of money for it afterwoods.don't give them anything since all the money goes down their parents pockets and as long as they make money their parents won't send them to school.

by NorthernTrav

I took a 'Tour' of the Bosphorus on a boat that I booked at the hotel. This particular 'tour' picked us up at our hotel in a little van, took us to the north end of the Bosphorus and dropped us off. We then boarded a public ferry (when it got there) and proceeded back to the Golden Horn. We did have a guide for our group.... if you happened to know that (it wasn't real clear that this was the case). She did a fair job, if you could hear her (no PA, no nothing - just sit next to her and listen carefully over the noises of the boat). The hotel was embarrassed about the whole deal, and moved the flyers to the bottom of the stack of flyers from other companies.
