When shopping,especially in...

by NIKKINOO

When shopping, especially in the markets, think before you buy.Offer half of what they want at first,as they always over price things. Also,be aware of how much money you have.Dont let them see how much you have, and DONT let them count it for you. They will confuse you and you may only end up with half your money being returned.

In the bazaars DO bargain....

by ChrsStrl

In the bazaars DO bargain. Offer only a quarter of what is asked and constantly look as if you are willing to walk away. At times do walk away and come back later - the price often alters! Don't go over what you set as your maximum and make your mind up about what that is before you start. Most of all, enjoy the experience of the bargain. Don't do it at a rush. Have a cup of tea. Look at alterantives. Make the whole thing part of a day, not a quick rushed thing. And even if you have spent some time (and even if they have unrolled a hundred carpets) still be prepared to walk away. By because you want to, not because you feel guilty. And don't get annoyed at being pestered, just smile and say no thanks, and just keep walking!

Oludeniz beach is supposed to...

by floss1

Oludeniz beach is supposed to be the most photographed spot in Turkey. I was very disappointed with it. Sure, it is beautiful but when you go to the beach, you have to pay an entrance fee into the lagoon/beach head area and then if you sit on one of the seats someone will ask you to pay for sitting there. There is no indication that you need to pay for using the seats. There are a few areas where you don't have to pay, but of course these are the worse spots on the beach.

When we arrived at the...

by brightonbell

When we arrived at the airport, we were going through passport control and were told BY THE OFFICIAL at passport control, to go with a man who had a luggage trolley. How helpful we thought - wrong! When we got outside and were met by our JMC rep, she advised us that we were going to be charged by this man if he took our luggage any further. She gave us a small piece of paper which had the charges on it, roughly about £1 per suitcase. We were told by her that we had to go upstairs and over a bridge (to get over the road) and down the other side to our waiting coach. We decided to use this man. Upon saying we'd use him, he grabbed all our carrier bags and my handbag! I wasn't very happy at this, but he literally ran off immediately and we chased after him - with our two young children, we found it very difficult to keep up with him and were glad when he stopped, halfway over the bridge...

CARPET DEALERS &...

by skullcrusher

CARPET DEALERS & COMMISIONSSelling a carpet is one of the fasted ways for folks in Turkey to make a lot of money quickly. It is big business here and it seems that almost everyone in Istanbul is in on a conspiracy to make sure that every tourist buys at least one carpet while there. I'm sure that many people DO come to Turkey to buy a carpet. If that's so - then go for it. I, however, say that you shouldn't let these folks talk you into buying something that you don't want. Accept their tea, hospitality, and offers to help .... but when it comes to buying a rug just say 'no'. I WOULDN'T let them take me out to some place out in the country. Who knows what they might do to you. But that's your decision.Even worse is that (in Istanbul esp.) people are constantly trying to weasel some sort of comission out of you. If you go on a tour, purchase tickets from a tour agency, or even go to a...

Please beware of the fact...

by a_manisa

Please beware of the fact that, the foundation of the traps are partly laid by the traveller her/himself. The decorated places; restaurants, bars and shops are usually designed theatre scenes to attract tourists; a natural reflex of enterpreneurs locked on money. Look for simple places where the native people go and be relaxed. Turkey and my fellow citizens are relaxed and free minded people not concerned on sticking to regulations, procedures etc. A european visitor must reformat her/his brain to fully enjoy my country.(photo- Eyerman/ 3D glasses)

DO NOT BOOK YOUR EXCURSIONS...

by CURIOUSS

DO NOT BOOK YOUR EXCURSIONS WHILE YOU'RE STILLIN YOUR 'HOMELAND', BECAUSE THE EXCURSIONS ORGANISEDAND PERFORMED BY LOCAL ARE OF EXACTLY THE SAMESTANDARD(GOOD) AND ABOUT 10% OF THE PRICE YOU WOULDHAVE PAYED ON BEFOREHAND. MAKE FOR YOURSELF AJUDGEMENT IF THE PERSON WHO IS OFFERING THE EXCURSIONIS GENUINE, TRUSTABLE OR NOT. MY EXPERIENCE WASPOSITIVE, AND THE PLACE I BOOKED WAS IN FRONTOF HOTEL 'LYDIA', WHICH WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THEEXCURSION TO MADE AS WELL.SO MY WARNING ABT A TOURIST TRAP, MY OPINION,IS PAY NOT TOO MUCH FOR THE SAME, AND THIS WAY YOUSUPPORT THE LOCAL PEOPLE AS WELL, AND NOT THE RICHEUROPEAN MULTINATIALS.

I can honestly only think of...

by chavez

I can honestly only think of one and that is the Taxi drivers. The way round them is if you have just arrived at the coach station from another destination find a goverment official (white shirts smartly dressed and have an Id card on display) ask them how much would a taxi cost to where ever you're going they will give u an approximate price IE if they say it's about 3 Million and the Taxi driver says 10 Million (Doh) you know he's trying it on. Either move onto the next one or tell him. If no guides about tell the driver to put the meter on they will soon bring the price down.On average if the journey is in excess of 20 km it will cost u about 13 - 14 million liras. The ones to watch out for are at Antalya Airport and At the Istanbul Bus Terminal.
