    Ortahisar

Ortahisar (middle castle) is the oldest part of Trabzon, with several ancient mosques, and some nice old houses to look at from the outside, but you can't see them too closely, as all the best ones are now government offices. Good views can be had from the bridges crossing the ravines into Ortahisar.

    Russian Bazaar

Between the port and the bus station is a rather seedy area of cheap hotels and restaurants, as well as a long blue warehouse-type structure...this is the Avrupali Pazari, usually translated as Russian Bazaar. This is interesting to see traders from Russia and ex-Soviet republics, and you can find some typical souvenirs, such as Russian dolls and the odd tin of Caspian caviar. Most of the stalls sell things you can find in other markets in Turkey, although there does seem to be a very large number of stalls selling women's hair dye!
