a walk in the near villages

    dawn on a near village

the near villages are in walking distance. you can get there -the local people are accustomed to that and they do not disturb you, even there are hostels in the villages- and walk around. you can take portraits of the people if you're lucky.

the fields and flowers, the little river and the hills are worthy of seeing.

also a short walk to the opposite direction into the valley may be a good experience. if you have your own transportation opprtunities, it would be magnificent to climb up the hills and reach the peaks of them, called "YAYLA"s.

Go through Uzungol and keep going until you reach the small bridge then climb up that. The road isn't too bad after a bit but the views are to die for.You don't need to go all the way to Bayburt but just up to the yayla or plateau above with some lovely villages glued to the mountainsides.

    Walk round the old village

On a slope above the mosque and the crowds, a few oldish-looking traditional houses are quietly ignored by most visitors to Uzungol. Not that there's much to see, but this is a genuine as Uzungol gets...it is just a nice way to escape the commercialism down below.

Buy simit and feed the ducks

    The ducks of Uzungol
    1 more image

I had flashbacks to my childhood, halfheartedly throwing stale bread at ungrateful ducks and swans in a Solihull park...little did I know then that I would be doing the same thing 20 years later on the shores of a Turkish lake! But the ducks swimming in the milky blue water seem much more photogenic here...they seem to like simit too.

    Walk round the lake

    The famous mosque at Uzungol

Picture the scene...you've just been dumped at the far end of the lake and have quickly realised that Uzungol really isn't so uzun (long) while six hours is. Well, the obvious way to spend the first hour or so is by walking round the lake...you can follow a peaceful path for half of it, while the other half is less pleasant, walking on a dusty bulldozed road. There are plenty of places to sip tea around the lake, and let's face it, you're not exactly short on time. A challenge is to have a cup of tea at each one...ten points for every cafe you sit in, while a bonus of twenty points is awarded to those day-trippers who have to stop the bus on the way home to have a quick roadside pee :)
