Sensitive conversation topics

by mikelisaanna

Turks are very friendly people and we had many great conversations with them during our stay in their country. However, be aware that there are certain topics where you have to be very careful. These are, in no particular order:1.) Islam. 98% of the Turks are muslims. Even if a Turk looks secular, they may be religious, and will not appreciate you criticizing their religion.2.) Ataturk. He is their country's founder and greatest hero. Speaking negatively or sarcastically about him is likely to produce very negative reactions.3. The Armenian events of the First World War. The Turks strongly dispute the accusations that have been made regarding those events and will give you an earful if you bring up the topic.4.) The Kurds. Turks have a wide variety of opinions regarding the Kurds. Let them bring up the topic first and hear their opinion before opening your mouth and inadvertantly...

Hassling

by AlperIst

Hi Miriam,I can understand you very well as a local who is also subject to hassling. As far as I know it is common in all resorts touristic towns. But that is not all. I live in a nontouristic part of Istanbul, Kadiköy town, which is obviously one of the most modern parts of Istanbul and all Turkey. There is a cute street ful of local little restaurant, akll local people around. I need to avoid walking at that nice street because all the restaurant guys just interrupt your way saying "come in come in" and block your way. I have to change my was to cross the street hardly. I wrote a complain letter to municipality and after two months they said they warned them. Of course, nothing changed. Those bandits still don't allow people to walk on the street peacefully.I have been to many countries some of them more touristic than Turkey, some of them are less. Never seen so much hassle as in...

Not a Danger but a Warning!!

by Suzze

This I must let you know if you don't already. It's about Bodrum airport, where you just get utterly ripped off. We all know at airports that food and drink is a bit more pricey, but this is ridiculous. I ordered after we had checked in our luggage, 2 cheese rolls and two coffees. I had two plates of chips shoved infront of me which I pointed out that I did not order, was told in a flash it comes with the rolls. Ok so be it, then she chucked two cheese and tomato rolls on my tray and two coffees were poured out of a machine. I had 25 lira on me thinking that would be plenty. I was told it was 48 lira! Did not have anymore lira on me so had to pay in English which was £19!! Everything that is sold at the airport is stated in Euro I have to warn you too, which I thought was odd as we were in Turkey. As we sat down to eat our very expensive cheese rolls, we looked at the vending machine for...

Islamic influence

by Clarchika

Generally Istanbul is quite tolerant about women dressing especially in more touristic spots. You can dress normal as you feel - also sleevless shirt etc but it is better to have male friend beside you couse Turks can be prety annoying. At districts that are not so touristic I recommend you to be more covered (you dont need a scarf but cover your shoulders and knees) becouse you can get some very judging looks. Believe me it is not comfortable!Same stands for couples, touristic parts are more tolerant but generally turks dont even kiss on lips in public.. again some people might stare at you and give you judging look.

Car Rental Scam - Beware of Lena!

by pradipta_p_saha

We hired a VW Jetta from Lena Car Rental in Selcuk, for a day trip. After a few hours, the car broke down, so we called the service hotline. We were told that a replacement was on its way and would be there in about an hour. Well, all that arrived after an hour was a tow truck - we called again and were now told that the tow truck would drop us and the broken down car at a Volkswagen service center in Kusadasi (40 km from Selcuk) where they would give us a replacement. Anyway, we got quite uncomfortably to Kusadasi, where we were told that they could not gve us another VW Jetta, but they could give us a VW Polo - we said fine, and were asked to wait for 15 minutes while the car was being readied. Well, 15 mins became 30, 30 became an hour, and whenever we asked we were told that the Polo was "almost here". Our requests to just get us a taxi back to Selcuk were "politely" dismissed (as...

Be on your normal gaurd

by Snipernurse

Be on your normal gaurd in Turkey. In places that locals or guide books tell you are dangerous or are places where pick pockets roam either don't go, are take the necessary precautions. My only threatening experience was in the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul when I felt a teenage boy put his fingers in my back pocket for my wallett, good thing I kept it in a front pocket that zipped shut. Be aware that scammers are RAMPANT in the Sultanahmet park area around Hagia Sofia, just ignore them and move on. I witnessed two turkish men escorting a white man to the ATM's who must had been a victim of one of their scams. These things happen. Always include reading about the warning and dangers of sites in your research of countries, understand Turkey is a very safe country but there are still places you must have hieghtened awareness and precautions. I found that most Turkish people are interested in...

Taxi drivers

by Knocko

Like everywhere else beware of the taxi driver On leaving Istanbul we got ataxi from Sultanahmet to Esenler otogar the driver quoted 40 ytl and after a very pleasent and imformative ride gave him 50 ytl the driver replied that i had,nt gave him enough and produceddifferent money from what i gave him saying i owed another 40 ytl During a heated argumenta passer by spoke to the driver in which he slamed the door and sped off which was a shame because he was a realy interesting man

Neveshir Otogar

When you get off the bus to connect with a smaller bus to Goreme, beware of guys speaking very good English and offering to take you over to the bus. They take you into their tour agency and try to flog you excursions!! When you insist on going to Gormeme, they will take you - in fact they took us right to our hotel - but save yourself the hassle and avoid them. They were the one blight on the whole trip! As they don't "lock you up, abandon you or beat you" to quote the bus company, the tourist police can't do anything!!

Taxi warnings

by klamos

Taxi drivers may use tricks to overcharge for a ride or even steal money. Especially if you going to airport or other trasportation terminal, so you don't have much time to agrue or to get police involved. The typical trick is - you hand money to a driver, he makes it look like he counts, then moment later he shows you "your" money where some bills you just gave him are missing or they are replaced with a smaller bills. So, he demands more money from you because you payed too little. The good advise is - no matter if you pre-negotiated the price or pating by the meter, get out of the car, unload your luggage, have at least one of the people travelling with you (the more the better) watching while you are paying, hand bills one-by-one saying the value of each bill you hand, when finished say the total amont you paid, say Thank You and leave.Never pay while in the car. Never hand all the...

side roads

by mr1987

Writing this from the center of Istanbul..best area. Don't go down side roads!!!My trip to a great town ruined. Took a short cut down a side road--passed a cafe and was rushed at by three guys who forced me through the door into what was obviouslya brothel. When I tried to leave---immediately---they started to push and shove and demanded money [which I didnt have] I screamed and they turned the music up and four or five more joined in.....was I scared. I finally got out [I think they thought I was going to have a heart attack--and so did I]. Found two Policeman but gave up cos they didnt speak English and took the better part of valour--retreated back to hotel. So don't be deceived-Istanbul is great-the people are nice but there are dangers-side roads are one of them.
