Driving in Turkey?? Are You serious?!

by Orbital_

I’ll make no bones about this – Turkish drivers are NUTTERS. Any form of Highway Code is dismissed as pure fiction. Indicating is optional, lane-changes utterly random, acceleration is stellar and pedestrians relegated to mere collateral damage should any be encountered... The list is as long as my arm. Do not drive over here unless you really have to. If you can drive in any of the major cites you deserve a medal. The poor state of the roads here doesn’t help either, you’ll only really find decent tarmac in urban areas.

Be Aware Of Earthquakes in Turkey

by deecat

Unfortunately, Turkey is well known for its earthquakes. It is located directly on a major fault zone and has experienced 8 large quakes [measuring 7.0 or higher] in the last sixty years. There have been 80 in the last century. You should be aware that the majority of these quakes take place on the western branch of the Anatolian fault that is located in the eastern Marmara region. Even though the government was well aware of these facts, they were completely unprepared for the 1999 disaster in Izmit. Turkey had to rely almost completely on volunteers for most of the rescue efforts. This particular earthqualke [if you, no doubt, remember] was the 2nd strongest recorded earthquake. It measured 7.0 on the Richter scale and lasted for 45 seconds.I remember reading that 500,000 people were left homeless and about 20,000 were killed. But what I found most terrifying was that there were 1300...

English

by ophiro

Although you can see here on VT some turkish and their english is ok most of the turkish dont know english , maybe only a few words , and also the young people.Try to understand a few words in Turkish thay will help you or just use hand signs. Most of the taxi drivers dont know english so take a card of your hotel with you to show them the address.

Restaurants in Touristic areas

by ophiro

While walking in touristic areas you will find a lot of restaurant owners and waiters outside the restaurant and they will try to make you sit in their restaurants. If you dont want just say no and walk.If you are going to a restaurant you should know that you will pay for the water and bread they put on the table and also for the service. You should check the menu before ordering because they can put a different price (i saw it myself) and also check the bill after the dinner because some of them are adding money to the total sum. When we went to a small restaurant near corlulu alipasa medresesi (in the old town) he gave us a bill of 22 YTL while it was only 15 YTL !!! - we told him and he say he is sorry , it was a mistake and changed to the correct bill.

Bazaar Prices

by ophiro

The bazaar prices are not cheap as you think - a lot of the sellers will try to sell you something that you can get a cheaper price somewhere else.try to search for small bazaars and not the grand bazaar or the egyptian bazaar.

Water

by ophiro

In many places you can read that it is better not to drink the tap water so buy minneral water. You can find minneral water almost everywhere but the best option to buy water is is a supermarket - they are cheaper there.we bought 6 bottles (1.5liter) in 4.5 YTL while outside (on the touristic places) it cost 1-2 YTL for one bottle (0.5 liter).

Taxis

by ophiro

To get a taxi in Istanbul is cheap if you are more than 1 person because you pay for the way and not for a person. Some of the taxi drivers will try to get an easy money because you are a tourist. If you want to get a taxi ask him for a meter and if it is before midnight check for the word GUNDUZ which means daytime and after midnight you should see the word GECE which means night (it is higher price)There are a lot of taxis in Istanbul so if a taxi driver tells you he will take for a sum of money higher than 2-3 YTL leave him and find another taxi because even if he will start a meter he probably will take you in a longer way.

Shoe Polishers

by ophiro

Shoe Polishers can be very agressive sometimes. They try to clean your shoes and after that take a lot of money from a naive tourist. If you dont want them to clean your shoes tell them before or even go from the place but if you want them to clean your shoes agree for a price.

The drivers

by ophiro

To my opinion the drivers in Istanbul are the worst drivers i've ever seen !!!.They are not careful , dont pay attention to the pedestrians and dont care about them.If you want to pass on a street be extra careful and try to pass when other pass or when there is no traffic and always on a crosswalk. They dont fasten their seatbelts , bikers ride without helmets , they dont signal when switching lanes , horn all the time.

Tip Photo
Pickpockets

by ophiro

When i first planned my trip to Istanbul i heard about Pickpockets and i was very worried. The bazaars are very crowded and so are the streets.Watch your bag all the time and don't leave him alone. When you are going in a crowded place like the bazaars , Istiklal street and the ferries try to keep the bag close to your body and pay extra attention.
