Rug Merchants

by paradise42

Wherever we went in Turkey, it seemed that everyone wanted our money. Rug merchants were especially persistent in getting us to purchase their wares. They will do almost anything to get you to walk into their shop. (You will soon begin to feel like a fish in a small pond with hundreds of fishermen lining the banks.) Be prepared to meet some of the "nicest" people in Turkey when you walk past a carpet shop. However, also be prepared to be treated like dirt if you decide not to buy anything. One merchant was so deeply offended that he sent us on our way by saying, "I feel sorry for you!"

Pay attention to all drivers

by birvine

Even drivers on the opposite side of the road should be watched. At one point while I was cycling along NW of Istanbul shortly after I began the trip. It was my first time pulling the BOB trailer so I kept looking back to make sure the attachment points were fine and that my gear was staying in place. One of these times I looked a little longer than normal. I felt myself drifting along my lane of the road, and since I was looking backwards I could see that nobody was coming my way. When I turned forward there was a car coming towards me in the opposite lane as well as another coming towards me IN MY LANE. I had only a few seconds to prevent an absolutely disastrous crash that certainly would have killed me.So, keep an eye everywhere all the time!

We took the night bus to Marmaris, but the bus was going to Bodrum so we had to get out quite far from Marmaris. The buscompany assured us there was going to be a dolmus there to pick us up when we arrived late night/early morning. The bus stopped at an open cafe where they also said a dolmus would come. So we sat down and waited and waited. And waited a bit more... After a long while one of the waiters working there told us he was going to Marmaris so we could come with him in his car. We were so happy for this offer and jumped in his car. After a long and sleepless night on the bus, plus waiting for the dolmus for hours, we just longed for a bed and some sleep. When we got to Marmaris the driver suddenly wanted A LOT of cash! And we had thought he was just being nice to us (duh!)... After a lot of arguing we got the price down under half of what he wanted, but it was still quite...

Single women travelers

by His_Beloved

I was constantly harassed in Istanbul, and felt it very unsafe to travel alone after dark. If you can, hook up with other travelers, if not, the best plan of action is to just ignore the constant attention. Once you say anything at all, you will most likely be followed for one or two blocks. On the other hand, If you do decide to enjoy the company of a Turkish man, remember that you are probably not the first, and you certainly will not be the last, so safe sex is an absolute must.

Where are you from?

by iilovepiink

In Turkey tourism is a major source of revenue for the inhabitants. The people have a very frendly nature but are also quite canny buisnessmen. i.e., an actual conversation Young Man (street seller): Hello, I have here for you this for only 2 euro. Where are you from?My Mother: Poland (My mother is Polish and I speak it fluently)Young Man: Ohh! Polonia! Yes, two for one euro!See how the price is immediatetly dropped? In Turkey, unfortunately, you are sized up and the initial asking price is determined on where you are from. If you are from America or England, the price is twice as much as someone from say, Slovakia. Don't let this discourage you however, show that you are not just an ignorant foriener by bargaining and offering a reasonable price (not more than 50%, lower is insulting) for the item you want. I have also found that it is to your advantage to feign disinterest if you like...

pay your respect to ataturk.

by cachaseiro

Watch what the good looking ladies order....

by hasthetravelbug

My friend and I were having lunch and a nice Turkish guy starts talking to us and offers to show us around a bit so he can practice his English. So we go with him around the Grand Bazzar. It was all good so when he offered to have a drink at his favourite bar we decided to go. We get in the place and it seemed just a little off. It was 5pm and we were in a late night club atmosphere. There were only 3 other people in the bar - all ladies wearing skanky clothing. So we order a beer and these ladies come over to our table and start getting chatty with us. The next question one of the asks is "can we order a drink" I reply, "sure but I only have enough cash for me and my buddy's" So they go and order anyway and the server comes over with expensive looking champagne. I knew something was up so I aggressively say "don't open that, we're not paying for it ..." The girls seemed disapointed and...

wide eyed tourists look out!!

by bengilmour

If you donýt want to be hassled by street sellers of all kinds be polite, wave your hand and say no thankyou and keep walking, avoid eye contact. U will lean this quick enough, if it is your first time, take my advice. I purchased so much junk and inflated prices my first time to Istanbul needlessly. .

Public toilets

by AcornMan

Although most developed areas of Turkey have modern public toilets like those you would see all over the world, it is not uncommon to encounter older public toilets that you squat over rather than sit on. If you think about it these are actually more sanitary because you never have to touch the toilet, but it can still be a bit unnerving at first. Just be sure everything in your pockets is secure! Also keep in mind that you often have to pay to use public toilets, though it's not expensive (about 25 cents or so).

Shopping in Markets

by Cynthia_marie

I was in Turkey during the months of Oct/Nov 2003. While shopping in the many, many markets of Side, Turkey, my friend, Kim and I had a difficult time with the men. They were extremely aggressive towards us and wanted us to come into their shops to buy things. Be careful of this. Even though they were kind at times, it became very uncomfortable for us and all the fun was taken out of shopping.
