Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Nov 2012

In an epic construction not seen probably since the Taj Mahal, the new Grand Mosque of Abu Dhabi was completed in late 2007. It is officially called the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, after the late unifier and ruler of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Zayed Al Nahayan, who is buried within the mosque. No expense was spared in the construction of what is the world's largest mosque-mausoleum. It is said that it could hold up to 30,000 worshippers in its interior. This multi-domed, white-marble-clad mosque contains the world's largest carpet (from Iran) and the largest chandelier (from Germany), as well as largest many other things from various parts of the world. The mosque is open to worshippers and tourists alike, but modest dress is required of men and women. It is located at the southern tip of the island of Abu Dhabi, right across from the newly opened Shangri-La Hotel & Resort. After many years of driving past it by car, I finally made it inside in November 2012.

Largest Mosque in UAE, world's largest carpet

Be careful because the traffic can get bad especially on Sheikh Zayed Road and closer to downtown.

I would try to get out and do some sightseeing or shopping. It all depends on what you are shopping for. I would recommend going to Medinat Zayed, it is a mall with much jewelry and other things. It is unlike the malls that you see in the West (ie Marina Mall, Khalidiya Mall, Abu Dhabi Mall, etc).

Depending on what time you get in, if you want to sightsee before Noon and it is not a Friday, I would go visit Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Mosque. Every morning (except Friday) at 10:00AM, they offer a guided tour. This Mosque is absolutely breathtaking and is the largest one in UAE and one of the largest in the world. In fact, they claim to have the world's largest carpet. The marble and gold-plated chandeliers are beautiful as well.

The Mosque is not downtown and is closer to the airport so you would risk no problem of missing your flight. It is well worth the visit and in my opinion is much more interesting than Marina Mall. I have pictures of the Mosque on my Home page.

Non-Muslims are welcome to visit the Mosque before Noon daily, free of charge. Guided tours are available in the morning- Sunday through Thursday, 10AM. Dress respectably! Women are able to check out appropriate garb at the entrance, men wear long pants. Do not come there as if you are dressed to go clubbing. You will not be allowed in and it is very disrespectful. The architecture, artwork, chandeliers, marble, 24 ct. gold, carpet, minarets and domes are magnificent.

Inside the Grand Mosque - Abu Dhabi

The Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Mosque is a spectacular place to visit in Abu Dhabi due its lavish decoration and things you can learn by taking a guided tour (Sunday to Thursday at 10am). The recently built mosque can hold 40,960 worshippers and has the biggest hand woven Persian carpet in the world in it's main prayer hall. The rich decoration can be seen all around the mosque and semi-precious stones such as lapis lazuli, red agate, amethyst, abalone shell and mother of pearl are used throughout, as well as gold and Swarovski crystals in the chandeliers.
You can visit the main prayer hall and the separate ladies prayer hall. There is also the spectacular courtyard decorated with floral tiles and the ablution areas down on the lower floor.
The mosque is open for visitors every day (apart from Fridays) from 9am - 12 noon. Tours, as mentioned before are at 10am from Sunday to Thursday. No bookings required for groups under 10 people. Entrance is free. Visitors should be moderately dressed with long sleeves and legs covered for women. Men should not wear shorts. Abayas are free to rent for ladies as well as head coverings - available at the entrance. Shoes should be removed in certain areas such as the prayer halls.

We took a taxi to this mosque from near Al Wahda Mall. There were lots of taxis parked outside, too, so we had no trouble getting back. I think some buses do go near, too, but taxis are probably the best bet.

The mosque was truly stunning. It is free to go inside and open to non-Muslims, but you must dress appropriately and be fairly covered up. Women need to go and get themselves an abaya before they will be allowed in. This is also free of charge, but you must hand over your passport or ID card in order to guarantee you will return it. You will be given a receipt and your documents will be returned when you return the abaya.

There are signs up denying you the right to even photograph the mosque if you are not dressed appropriately. I got told off for trying to take a last photo after I had returned my abaya.

To go inside the mosque you must take off your shoes and women must have their heads covered inside the mosque and in the courtyard outside.

All of the above is worth complying with as the mosque is well worth seeing.

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque was created by the late President of the United Arab Emirates, HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. His grave is located on the grounds of the mosque. The mosque was constructed between 1996 and 2007. It is the largest mosque in the United Arab Emirates and the eighth largest mosque in the world.

Inside the mosque is truly beautiful and you are allowed to take photos. The floor is covered by the world's largest carpet, created in Iran. The ceilings are hung with enormous lights created in Germany. There are flower covered floor and wall tiles. There are wooden panels inlaid with mother-of-pearl.

Inside the mosque is very beautiful with the world's largest carpet. The carpet measures 5,627 square metres (60,570 sq ft), and was made by around 1,200-1,300 carpet knotters.

The ceilings are adorned with seven immense chandeliers imported from Germany. These are made up of millions of Swarovski crystals.

The part that impressed me most were the beautiful floral floor and wall tiles.

The Grand Mosque is simply a must do in Abu Dhabi and even if you are anywhere in the U.A.E. you simply must make a trip to Abu Dhabi to visit the Grand Mosque. The structure is simply marvelous and the decor one of the most sophisticated. The details and the finery is sure to make you say 'WOW' repeatedly!!
Take time to walk around. There are wash rooms which are well maintained. Dress modestly. In case women who are visiting are not covered adequately, they lend Abhayas. You are required to deposit you id card/passport to borrow the Abhaya and when you return it back, you get back your card/pp.
The mosque houses the world's largest chandelier and carpet. The marble work, stained glass work and pillars are works of art par excellence. The main prayer hall is breathtaking. Drink in the opulence and aesthetic art work.

final of my multi tip review of the shiezh zayed grand mosque with pictures of the grand main prayer hall

The Shiekh Zayed Grand Mosque is the Largest Mosque in the United Arab Emirates and is one of the few Mosques in the UAE open to non muslims. Unlike the few mosques in Dubai that are open to non muslims but only via guided tours, you can visit the Shiekh Zayed Grand Mosque on your own without guided tours (but they also give free guided tours of the mnosque), just be reminded to wear appropraite clothing like no shirts or tank tops for both men and women. you are provided an abaya fro free to enter the mosque it you are not approriately dress if a woman and a thawb for the men as this is a house of worship after all.

The Shiekh Zayed Grand Mosque is one the world’s largest mosques, with a capacity for an astonishing 41,000 worshippers. It features 82 domes, over a 1,000 columns, 24 carat gold gilded chandeliers and the world's largest hand knotted carpet. The main prayer hall is dominated by one of the world’s largest chandeliers ,10 metres in diameter, 15 metres in height and weighing twelve tons. There are reflective pools around the mosque that reflect the mosque's spectacular columns, which becomes even more glorious at night.. There are 96 columns in the main prayer hall are clad with marble and inlaid with mother of pearl.

Unlike other mosques in Abu Dhabi, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is open daily to visitors, except on Friday morning, which is for worshippers only. Complimentary one hour guided tours run (Sun-Thurs) at 10am, 11am and 4.30 / 5pm. Friday times are 5pm and 7.30 /8pm and Saturday 10am, 11am, 2pm, 4.30 /5pm and 7.30 / 8pm.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Abu Dhabi, UAE

"Abu Dhabi" hosts the third largest mosque in the world, after the ones in Mecca and Madina in Saudi Arabia.

I've seen the building stages of the mosque in several years piece after piece and as result its a great architecture .... For over 12 years, more than 2500 people have been working at temperatures above 40 degrees centigrade, on a project that’s intended to become a national icon. The construction of the Sheikh Zayed Al Nahyan Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi is destined to be the biggest mosque in the United Arab Emirates. The construction is a huge multi-national undertaking bringing together designers, features, materials and suppliers from nearly every corner of the globe: Italy, Germany, Morocco, India, Turkey, Iran, China, Greece and the UAE. The final result is nothing short of spectacular, not only in sheer size, but also in architectural and creative beauty; this is not just a mega structure but an artistic statement on a massive scale.

The mosque is open for prayers all day long. For the non-muslim visitors, the visiting time is from 9am - 10pm every day except for Friday mornings.

Guided tours are organised by the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority.

You shall for sure see this great Mosque on your next Abu Dhabi visit ... :)

    Grand Mosque, Abu Dhabi....Truly Grand

Grand mosque, Abu Dhabi is a great piece of modern architecture. My pics might suggest the structure might be centuries old because of the design. The truth is, construction was finished only a few years ago. Both the structure and the garden around the mosque are great.

Anyone visiting Abu Dhabi should not miss this mosque.

Please check the timings before going as there are separate visiting hours for non muslims, we were not allowed to go inside as we were late. Its better to dress modestly especially for women.

by pakistanibrain Written Sep 4, 2007
Sheikh Zayed Mosque (pic taken from the motorway)

This mosque, which is outside the city centre, is still under construction and is expected to be completed soon. It is located between two major bridges leading into the city, the Mussaffah Bridge and the Maqta Bridge.

It will be the second largest mosque in the world in terms of area, after Masjid al-Haram in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. According to recent news reports the worlds largest carpet was made for this mosque by Iranian craftsmen.
