  • By a GPS navigation

by lhodics Written Dec 1, 2007

If you intend to drive in Abu Dhabi and especially in Dubai, you should consider buying a GPS navigation device with Middle East map. It is dangerous to use the paper map while driving because you wont be able to focus on the traffic. Hughe 4WD vechicles tend to change lanes without warning and they would smash you if you are not caucious. You will loose your way because of road construction, or heavy traffic will not let you exit where you would like to. In this case the GPS will recalculate the route and you loose a little time but not your life in an accident. The GPS will anounce the required maneuvers in advance, will show a graphic map with actual position for your reference, and you can concentrate on the traffic. I am using a Nokia E61i with GPS module and found it indispensable in the UAE.

Bus Service from Dalma Jetty to Abu Dhabi

by zuyao Updated Feb 14, 2007
Bus station in Ruwais housing complex.

There is a bus service from Dalma Jetty/ Jebel Dhanna area to Abu Dhabi. The same bus serves Jebel Dhanna, Dhafra Beach Hotel and Sir Bani Yas Island Jetty.

In the morning, it leaves at around 8am. Sometimes you may need to change bus at Ruwais. The bus will stop midway at Tarif for a short break (very short), so make sure you don't miss the bus. It'll take 3 hrs or more to reach the Abu Dhabi municipality bus station in the middle of town. The bus is a 49-seater so it's not luxurious at all. However, it is comfortable enough for only Dh12. The driver is friendly and helpful should you need any assistance or directions. You'll probably need it because the bus signs are all in Arabic. Good sense to always reconfirm whether you are on the right bus, if you were asked to change coaches.

From Abu Dhabi, the bus leaves at 1pm back to Dalma. If you take a later bus, the bus will only reach Ruwais. From there, alternative transport like a taxi will have to be arranged. The last bus from Abu Dhabi to Ruwais is 7pm.

This bus service allows you to say, make a trip to Abu Dhabi on one day, stay a few days there and come back conveniently after normal hotel check-out time.

From Ruwais or Gayathi, I was told hourly bus services are available. But I'm not too sure on that.

Private transfer from airport to city

by Kivi Updated Mar 12, 2007

If you are travelling with small kids, I think its reasonable to book transfer to/from a hotel in advance. Motorways in Abu Dhabi are in good shapes so drivers used to drive very fast. Taxis don't have baby seats with, but when you order a city tarnsfer ia advance, they can arrange it.

Arabian Adventures is one of the places where to ask city transfers.

    Bus Service in Abu Dhabi

by zuyao Updated Apr 4, 2011
    Abu Dhabi Main Bus Station
    1 more image

Bus service is available in Abu Dhabi to other nearby towns. Bus routes are confusing but the price is cheap. Buses are air-conditioned and are fairly comfortable. But note they are not high on hygiene level and the crowd can sometimes be quite unsettling. Always reconfirm with the driver before boarding the bus to make sure you are not on the wrong one. Most drivers speak some English so it won't be too difficult. Signs are almost all in Arabic. Anyway, it's a cheap way to travel. The main bus station in Abu Dhabi is situated on East Road in the Al Wahda area. You can also catch the Emirates Express from here to Dubai. Some bus routes:
    500 - Ruwais (At 10am & 1pm to Dalma Jetty & Jebel Dhanna too)
    700 - Al Ain
    900 - Sila

The taxi station is located next to the main bus station. From here you can take taxis to Dubai and other parts of the Abu Dhabi emirate.

  • Know where you are going

by emnrich Written Aug 27, 2007

Be sure when you get in the taxi, you know where you are going to on the other end. Most drivers only speak limited English. They can get you to a specifice area, such as Khalidya or the Corniche, but you will have to direct them the rest of the way, unless you are going to an obvious city landmark, like the mall or government buildings. There are street names and numbers, but no one uses them here. There are no street addresses, only PO Boxes which makes it hard to get around at first.

    Local Taxis/ Rent a Car

    by sharlene5 Written Mar 15, 2005

Taxis moving around abu dhabi will never reach more than 10 dhs.

You can stop a cab at any Bus stop/ Parking on the road side. Note that eventhough taxis will stop if you hail them anywhere on the road, you will get in trouble/ they willg et fined, if they stop anywhere else, but at the appropriate stops.

  • Taxis

by Srechko Written Mar 27, 2005

Taxi is unbelievably cheap in Abu Dhabi and there are many of them around. They are all white in colour (Toyota Corolla's) and most of the drivers do not speak English. If they do, they will most likely complain to you how they do not get enough business in Abu Dhabi and that they would like to move to Dubai....etc.

It is very important you negotiate the price in advance unless you are going for a short distance.

    I was paying US$3 for 20km distance.

  • Taxi - hang on for dear life

by Mark_ Written Sep 14, 2005

Taxi's are plentiful and cheap but very few drivers speak English and they all drive like men possessed. The hotel cars are about 5x more expensive than the local cabs. Also a taxi to the airport is a fixed price

    TAXI TO GO EVERYWHERE

by loira Written Jan 21, 2005

Taxi is very cheap so you can go everywhere, but sometimes taxi drivers don't understand english so they just drive and don't go where you want....they drive as lunatics as well as all the drivers in town.

As a pedestrian watch them cause they don't care about you!!!!

    Abu Dhabi Airport

    by nicole8 Written Sep 21, 2003

I like this airport although it's crowded but when you are getting bored waiting for the flight, you can sit there and look people walking around you, they are people from typical gulf region, long white cloth covering whole body, I even saw a woman covering herself from head to feet with black cloth, worse than those in Afghenistan, they also cover their eyes! Yet I guess it's not polite if I try to take a pic of her! That's obvious!

    Abu Dhabi

I didn't notice any sign of public transport in Abu Dhabi. Maybe because everyone has a car. We used a taxi. It's cheap and you always pay by the meter. Very convenient and fast.
