If you intend to drive in Abu Dhabi and especially in Dubai, you should consider buying a GPS navigation device with Middle East map. It is dangerous to use the paper map while driving because you wont be able to focus on the traffic. Hughe 4WD vechicles tend to change lanes without warning and they would smash you if you are not caucious. You will loose your way because of road construction, or heavy traffic will not let you exit where you would like to. In this case the GPS will recalculate the route and you loose a little time but not your life in an accident. The GPS will anounce the required maneuvers in advance, will show a graphic map with actual position for your reference, and you can concentrate on the traffic. I am using a Nokia E61i with GPS module and found it indispensable in the UAE.

Taxi's are plentiful and cheap but very few drivers speak English and they all drive like men possessed. The hotel cars are about 5x more expensive than the local cabs. Also a taxi to the airport is a fixed price

Taxi is very cheap so you can go everywhere, but sometimes taxi drivers don't understand english so they just drive and don't go where you want....they drive as lunatics as well as all the drivers in town.
As a pedestrian watch them cause they don't care about you!!!!

Taxis moving around abu dhabi will never reach more than 10 dhs.
You can stop a cab at any Bus stop/ Parking on the road side. Note that eventhough taxis will stop if you hail them anywhere on the road, you will get in trouble/ they willg et fined, if they stop anywhere else, but at the appropriate stops.

Taxi is unbelievably cheap in Abu Dhabi and there are many of them around. They are all white in colour (Toyota Corolla's) and most of the drivers do not speak English. If they do, they will most likely complain to you how they do not get enough business in Abu Dhabi and that they would like to move to Dubai....etc.
It is very important you negotiate the price in advance unless you are going for a short distance.
I was paying US$3 for 20km distance.

I like this airport although it's crowded but when you are getting bored waiting for the flight, you can sit there and look people walking around you, they are people from typical gulf region, long white cloth covering whole body, I even saw a woman covering herself from head to feet with black cloth, worse than those in Afghenistan, they also cover their eyes! Yet I guess it's not polite if I try to take a pic of her! That's obvious!

I didn't notice any sign of public transport in Abu Dhabi. Maybe because everyone has a car. We used a taxi. It's cheap and you always pay by the meter. Very convenient and fast.
