AJMAN CITY CENTRE: Where Tourists & Local Familes rub shoulders

by JessH Updated Jul 12, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Ajman City Centre is the only major mall in Ajman, and therefore it is very popular amongst its residents! (it is also the tiny "cousin" of the Dubai City Centre, both owned & operated by the Al Futtaim group). The mall is basically a long tunnel-like structure, with shops on either side.

I usually come here once a week to do my grocery shopping at the Carrefour hypermarket. The mall is most busy on Thursday and Friday evenings, especially in the summer months where families visit the mall to keep their kids entertained at the "Magic Planet" area, with rides, games, simulators & fast food outlets.

What to buy: --> Surprisingly, some good stores that we are used to seeing in Dubai can also be found here: Splash, Lifestyle, Areej (Cosmetics & Perfumes), a large Sports store, Promod (fashion), Pretty Fit Shoes, a gorgeous Arabian Oud (incense) store, Damas Jewellery, Opticians (cheaper than in Dubai), etc.

Some small, independent stalls can also be found here, such as a superb healing crystal shop with extremely reasonable prices, as well as a Lebanese company producing natural soaps and lotions. These stalls are also great for buying unique fashion accessories (hand bags, necklaces, etc.)
Many tourists staying at the nearby Kempinksi Hotel can also be spotted shopping here.

Unfortunately, the mall doesn't have any nice dining options. You can grab a bite to eat in the food court, but we usually opt for the slightly quieter option: a sandwich or a salad at Gerard's French Patisserie.
Another reason for our weekly visits is the Cinestar Cinema here. Tickets are 30 Dirhams per person, and during a weekend-afternoon showing we usually have the cinema almost completely to ourselves :-)

All in all: even though this little mall is probably merely the size of the average storage room of most of Dubai's gigantic malls:
if you're in the area, Ajman City Centre has plenty to offer.

NOTE: Even though this is a modern mall, may I advise that women should still wear "decent" clothing. Ajman is a lot more traditional than Dubai, so if you show too much skin you will receive a lot of disapproving looks & comments here.

    Opening Hours:
    Saturday to Thursday: 10:00am - 10:00pm.
    Fridays: 02:00pm - 10:00pm.

What to pay: Due to its semi-isolated location, many stores have much cheaper prices than in Dubai (i.e. optician, souvenirs, incense, crystal stones, etc.)
