Favorite thing: Since the discovery of oil, Sharjah has developed from small palm-frond ‘arish’ houses hugging the creeks, to a modern city that extends all the way to the UAE’s East Coast. Modern development took off in the early 1970s resulting in the rapid expansion of the town and Emirate as a whole.

Favorite thing: Frankly speaking I have never seen so many skyscrapers neither in Europe nor in Asia as I saw in Dubai and Sharjah. I think there aren’t so many in Europe at all. There are in Asia but when I was in China (1988) and in Japan (1993) they weren’t built yet. So it was so exciting for me to see skylines of Dubai and Sharjah.
We have been told that the public buildings in the Emirate were all designed by the present Sheikh, who is a qualified architect, and it made a visual change from the usual sceneries of skyscrapers in the other Emirates.

Favorite thing: Sharjah Emirate has its capital Sharjah city which is the third largest city (after Dubai and Abu Dhabi) in the United Arab Emirates. Its population is about a million people including a lot of workers from India and Pakistan and plenty of businessmen and tourists.
Sharjah means ‘rising sun’. The city of Sharjah overlooks the Persian Gulf and is bordered by the cities of Dubai and Ajman, which are so close now that you can’t even find whither you are in Sharjah still or already in Dubai or Ajman.

Favorite thing: Sharjah is very different from Dubai - so when you're fed-up with trawling around monstrious shopping malls and sipping fancy coffees in 5-star hotel lobbies, it's time to head North to the emirate of Sharjah.

Fondest memory: Some of Sharjah's most well-known sights are:
> Sharjah Blue Souk (central market).
> Discovery Centre (near airport).
> Natural History Museum.
> Sharjah Art Museum.
> Arabian Wildlife Centre.
> Sharjah University City.
> Sharjah Grand Mosque.
> Al Hisn Fort.
> Al Qasba & the "Eye of the Emirates" (ferris wheel)

Favorite thing: Sharjah has a rich legacy of arts, heritage and culture and promotes itself as "the UAE"s cultural capital". The emirate has preserved its natural and cultural heritage across the Emirate in the form of historic buildings, museums and nature reserves.
The Sharjah Museums Department was established in 2006 as an independent government department affiliated to the Ruler's Office. This department oversees and links the current and future museums of Sharjah. The Sharjah Museums cover the arts, Islamic culture and history, heritage and history of the emirate and the region, archaeology, science, children's learning, natural history and the environment.
Fondest memory: I find their website very useful, as it links to all the different museums, centres and art galleries in the emirate.

Favorite thing: I would definitely recommend the desert safari.
Fondest memory: When I first knew I was going to UAE, I immediately thought about sand, men dressed in flowing white clothes and women in black. Nothing prepared me for the lush green lawns, the sprawling richness - be it in buildings, roads, malls etc.

Favorite thing: Sharjah is a stone-throw from Dubai and yet it is so completely different. It is as opulent as Dubai but far less flashy... and it is very moral: no alcohol allowed, no shisha cafes and no swimsuit on its beaches.
Sharjah is in a different emirate (the Sharjah emirate) but it mainly exists to house workers in Dubai at cheaper prices... take a taxi there at the wrong time and you'll be stuck in a massive traffic jam. A 20 minutes drive from heaven turns into a 1 hour+ drive from hell.
Fondest memory: We did not spend too long in Sharjah - but the impression is one of charm. It's definitely worth to go back, at a different time. Early afternoon is when the famous souqs close down for lunch and siesta... while it is great to enjoy them uncrowded... for shopping, it sucks... Big time.

Q: Please let me know the taxi fare from Sharja to Dubai-airport
