    Al-Hisn Fort

  • First built in 1820 as the residence of Sharjah’s ruling family, Al Hisn Fort, now a museum, has been restored to its former glory. The building houses old photographs of the Al-Qasimi family, along with jewellery and traditional weapons.

A tiny cinema shows early footage of the first British Imperial Airways flight which landed in Sharjah in 1932 en route to India. Other fascinating footage shows the traditional desert lifestyle of the Bedouins.

    King Faisal Mosque

  • Like many of Sharjah’s mosques, this one is a recent addition, having been completed in 1985. Accommodating up to 3,000 worshippers, it is spectacular for its sheer size and is the biggest in the UAE.

However, compared to some of the prettier mosques in Sharjah, this one has a functional and modern look, with two towering minarets and a single swollen dome. Situated in Al Ittihad Square, the King Faisal is one of Sharjah’s main landmarks.

    Sharjah Heritage Museum

  • Part of the same complex as Al Hisn Fort, the Heritage Museum comprises the Al-Naboodah family house, the Al-Midfaa house - both fine examples of traditional Emirates architecture - and the old Al-Arsah Souk, one of the most pleasant souks in the city.

Throughout the complex you will find traditional Arabian costumes, jewellery, furniture and even games are on display or for sale. However, equally interesting are the buildings themselves which are rare examples in the city of well-kept traditional architecture of the region.

    Sharjah Archaeological Museum

  • Sharjah’s excellent Archaeological Museum comprises a fascinating collection of artefacts recovered from the desert and the many ancient ruins that can be found throughout the Emirates. The collection traces the history of the early people of the region, from the Stone Age through to the modern day. Displays are deigned to be innovatively hands-on, with interactive computer presentation and videos that bring the technology of the ancients to life.

Each gallery traces a particular period of settlement in the Arabian peninsula, from the ancient burial sites found in the Buhais Mountains to the early days of “Greater Arabian” culture, found in city sites such as Mleiha. Artefacts range from every day tools and utensils to weaponry and models of the buildings of each period.

  • The desert safari is definitely recommended for everyone between 6 to 60! If you are short on time and want to experience 'the desert' there's nothing that can be compared to this.

Have a read through my Dubai travel page for what desert safari is all about.

    Sharjah Islamic Museum

  • While Sharjah has several excellent museums, the Islamic Museum is outstanding, housing an impressive collection of ancient manuscripts, exquisite artwork and Arabic handicrafts. Part of it occupies the 200-year-old Al Shamsi, itself an interesting example of traditional architecture.

One of the most prized exhibits is a piece of the curtain that covers the holy Ka’aba stone in Mecca. There is also the opportunity to watch documentary films showing various Islamic traditions. All in all, the museum provides a fantastic introduction to Islamic culture.
