 | Dubai Local Customs | Tips 61 - 70 of 84 | | Popular Local Customs | Other Local Customs Tips | All Tips (84) Smokers seem to have found their place in Dubai. In Norway there are lots of rules on where you can smoke and not and most people follow these rules. As a non-smoker I don’t really think much about it because most places where I go I don’t have to deal with it. But it was a bit different in Dubai. First of all smoking was allowed in public places like the mall. In some areas there were signs saying something like “We thank you for not smoking”. But these signs just seemed like requests not actual rules that had to be followed. One day at a mall I was in the toilet washing my hands. And in the mirror I could see cigarett smoke coming up from one of the cubicals. And when his cell phone rang at the same time the situation got even funnier Leave a Comment

Do not take a picture of a local Arab (especially a lady) without first asking. Most likely you'll be denied anyway. This is still a Muslim country and some elements of conservatism is still there. It's best the respect the cultural sensitivities. But if you really have an urge to take a photo of a lady fully covered in their veil, you can do it in the Heritage Village. There are ladies there totally covered (I think they are Indians) who would not mind being photographed.

Don't drink water in public - you can be fined - same goes for eating. Women shouldn't show their elbows or knees during this period. The best idea is to watch what locals are doing and follow them. Leave a Comment

If you come to Dubai as a tourist from Europe or America I wouldn't recommend to drive yourself. People coming from Asian countries will find the Dubai traffic to be somewhat familiar, however since the streets are very large and in good condition, you will be facing highers speeds here. So all I can say is: Be careful or use taxis!

October 4th is the expected date for the start of the holy month of Ramadan in 2005. If you're staying in a hotel in Dubai during this period, you won't be much affected, as it tends to be business as usual to a great extent. If you're out and about, adults should not eat (not even gum) drink or smoke in public before sunset. Hotels and many restaurants around town will set up Iftar tents where you can enjoy the breaking of the fast. There will be no live music for the whole month, although there may still be background music in restaurants. Alcohol is still served in the hotel bars. Emiratis are very tolerant of western culture, other religions and customs, and often turn a blind eye to inappropriate behaviour by visitors. During Ramadan, standards are higher. Leave a Comment

[this is written in response to a Q regarding 'gay behavior'] unless you're passionately kissing a person of the same sex, i think no one will notice you and your sig. other....anything beyond this type of physically affectionate behavior between people of the same sex, i didn't see or know about, as some feel 'gay behavior' is subjective and others objective...if you're trying to hook up with someone of the same sex, you'll have to ask the experts who live there....when i visited dubai, i saw plenty of men being very affectionate, and girls holding hands and stuff - pretty much everywhere i went...good luck

good question. I think one should be careful about displaying alchohol openly in public in ALL muslim countries. The home office also advises on things like this and showing respect for the muslim faith by dressing appropriately. I say, this is something that should be applied to all faiths and cultures across the globe. The number is times i've seen tourists in Goa walk through the town centre in practically a bikini is amazing! Or tourist men walking around with no top on. If the locals don't do it, You don't do it. As far as i'm aware, you can buy alcohol at the tourist hotels. Leave a Comment

i'll tell you what occurred to my husband very recently, in a coffee shop he visits frequently: after receiving good service, he was signing the bill and about to write in the tip amount (place didnt add 10% automatically)...the employee of the coffee shop said to him "dont worry about adding a tip, thank you" of course he thought it strange, so he asked why he shouldnt add a tip. He was told by the coffee shop server that the tip goes to the company, and that the employees never see any of the "tips" left on a credit card charge by the patrons... If this is in fact happening, we of course feel it's very wrong on the part of this coffee shop. Just in case, we decided to tip in cash from now on.
