Ladies really are spoilt for choice on where to go for drinks in Dubai... you don't even have to wait until the sun goes down! Once a month our group of girls meets up for lunch (to start our weekend!) and a merry time at Cactus Cantina; located on the 8th floor of the Rydges Plaza Hotel in Satwa (at the end of Diyafah Street). Cactus Cantina is a medium-sized venue & can seat up to 140 persons. When you're there, say "hi" to Mario who is waiting the tables. > Enjoy the Thursday Happy Hour (new in 2008) 12noon - 7pm: we paid only 65 Dirhams for a huge pitcher (approx. 8 glasses) of strawberry margherita :-) > Friday Special: Two for One! Order 1 main course and receive a 2nd one absolutely free. If you are planning to also have lunch, it's advisable to book a table in advance if you will be more than 4 people... needless to say: It get's very crowded! Spoil yourself to some yummy mexican food and their great margheritas. Try the vegetable quesidillas (39 Dhs), the spinach enchiladas (32 Dhs) the burritos with chicken, shrimp or beef (42 Dhs) or the tostado grande salad (36 Dhs) - delicious! NOTE: This isn't "fine dining" and I don't recommend their rather chewy steaks. But the food is pretty OK & does the job of lining your stomach for a serious night of drinking ahead :-) This is the perfect place to "warm-up" for a Thursday night on the town. > FRIDAY all day: buy 1 Mexican main course & receive a 2nd main course absolutely free. Free margheritas for the ladies. > SATURDAY NIGHT: Salsa Dancing lessons for all. > "The Writing's on the Wall": Hard to believe, yet true: if it's a rainy day (rare, but it happens!) head down to Cactus Cantina where ladies can enjoy even more free drinks (see picture). No time limit on this offer... whenever you order another round the waiter simply sticks his hand out of the window... as long as it's drizzling you can be guzzling ;-)
Casual, casual, casual. (Girls, the ladies room has very nice.... well.... "decor".... check it out!) Opening Hours: Saturday - Thursday 12:00noon - 01:00am, Friday 06:00pm - 01:00am. UPDATE October 2007: This restaurant used to offer all free drinks for ladies also on every Thursday afternoon. Unfortunately, after 10 years of generosity, management has decided to cut this down to only 2 free drinks on Thursdays (but more free drinks on Fridays). UPDATE May 2009: This restaurant now has seperate smoking and non-smoking sections. There are only a handful of venues in Dubai that have remained the same throughout the years, guaranteeing consistent service, quality & atmosphere as the recipe of their success. "The Boston" is one of these venues at the top of the list. The clientele is a mix of middle-aged Brits & Americans enjoying "a couple of pints" & some traditional American dishes, and youngsters looking for a more private, personal & relaxed surroundings. It's always been a warm, welcoming atmosphere and we pray that it will hopefully remain that way, with theme nights, happy hour prices, ladies nights and the best of Rock, golden classics & the latest hit music selected by the in-house DJ. Boston Bar is nothing special, and you're not missing anything if you don't make it here during your stay. But if you're in the area & have nothing "fancier" to do, pop in and have a look :-) Daily Happy Hour: 12.00noon - 08:00pm. Saturdays & Sundays - Sports Day: Happy Hour all Day Long! Guess the score for a chance to win a Dhs 75 bar tab. Monday - Quiz Night: From 09:30 - 11:30pm. Great prizes for the winners!! Participants enjoy Happy Hours prices during the quiz. Tuesdays & Thursdays - "Girls Gone Wild": (dancing on the bar is encouraged!) Four (4) free drinks for the ladies from 09:30pm to midnight. DJ Danny plays a mix of 60's, 70's, 80's and the 90's tunes. Friday - "Boston Rocks" Five (5) drinks for Dhs 50 from 03:00pm - 08:00pm. DJ Danny plays rock tunes.
This is one of the places you visit and you always know what to expect: no huge surprises, no fuss, no frills, but always a good time. Dress Code: Casual to Smart-Casual (jeans and shirt is fine. No sandals, no local attire, no beach-wear/shorts/etc.) Opening Hours: 12:00 noon to 02:30am Leave a Comment

Enjoying Friday Brunch at the Irish Village, Dubai by JessH, 4 more photos The Irish Village is a Dubai institution that is always busy with residents & tourists alike. Be it for lunch, a quite afternoon drink in the sun, or a lively evening with friends, it's an absolute must! My friends and I head to the I.V. when we want to go out, but aren't in the mood for crowded, hot & deafeningly loud nightclubs. It is set in its own mock village with traditional shop fronts & a large courtyard with shady trees, a pond with fountain & even its own ducks. Children are welcome during the day, but are usually asked to leave after 09:00pm due to laws & regulations. They serve an assortment of draught beers, good Irish/British pub grub & a one-man-band entertains you with a mix of Irish folk songs & contemporary hits. There is plenty of space inside to escape the summer's heat & humidity, but it's in winter that the Village really comes alive. Crowds flock to take advantage of the weather; sit on large wooden benches with plenty of waiters OK-service (mostly Irish) and another 2 outside bars making sure your glass is never empty. There's even an Irish arts & crafts shop, where you can buy anything from fine ceramics to quirky Guinness-slippers & Leprechaun Hats. Due to its popularity the I.V. is packed outside on weekends & basically on every evening from October to May. Without reservations, it may be harder to get a seat - this will always be one of Dubai's most-loved pubs & restaurants! The restaurant accepts lunch & dinner reservations every day except Thursdays. (Try the grilled salmon on spinach & leeks (AED 65-)!) My friends loves the Bangers & Mash (AED 36-) & Bailey's Cheese Cake (AED 25-). Their Fish 'n' Chips are extremely good & plentyful as well! The only dish that's oily & bland is the Vegetable Lasagne; I don't recommend it. FRIDAYS: Brunch Buffet from 12noon - 04:30pm, 70 Dhs per person. Opening Hours: 11:00am-01:30am (all-day breakfast, lunch & dinner menu)
Entrance: Free. Casual, casual, casual. (This may sound strange, but girls may want to bring along a small cushion for your "behind" if you plan to stay long. I've sat on those wooden benches for entire afternoons & evenings, and it got... well... uncomfortable... LOL!) --> Don't miss the annual Irish Village ST PATRICK'S DAY PARTY (17th March) with live bands, buffet & special drinks offers! An Irish Poem: Some Guinness was spilt on the barroom floor When the pub was shut for the night. When out of his hole crept a wee brown mouse And stood in the pale moonlight. He lapped up the frothy foam from the floor Then back on his haunches he sat. And all night long, you could hear the mouse roar, "Bring on the goddamn cat!" (Did you know the correct response to "Top o' the mornin' to ye"? It's: "and the rest of the day to you.") * * Leave a Comment Theme: OtherAddress: The Aviation Club (Tennis Stadium), GarhoudPhone: 00971-4-282 4750Directions: Only 3 minutes drive from Dubai airport, on the right side, just before Garhoud Bridge. Dressed-up for Long's Birthday Bash (70s style) by JessH, 4 more photos This is the venue with the longest bar in the Middle East, with an authentic dark wood, creaky floor, British bar-look. Long's is a casual venue for a nice dinner with friends before heading-out into town. I like meeting some of the girls for dinner & cocktails there, laughing at the guys ogling at the young & the beautiful that come here for the warm-up :-) The menu features dishes from the Far East, Mediterranean & a wide variety of traditional pub-grub: Fish 'n' Chips, Steaks, Burgers, etc. Long's goes with the principle "stick to what you know" and does well with it. There's a small dance floor at the back, just large enough to get your boogie on to the collection of 70s rock & 80s pop. If your legs won't carry you to the ultra-modern, huge nightclubs around town, this is a practical alternative for some carefree weekend fun. Mostly Long's is busy in the early evening; frequented by party-crowds that pop in for an early drink, some nibbles & then head out to the clubs at around midnight. SPECIALS: Tuesdays - 80s & 90s Night, 2 free drinks for ladies between 9pm-midnight. Fridays - Dubai's longest happy hour: 12pm - 12am & Brunch Buffet. Saturdays - "the big chill". Beanbags, funky music & special Finlandia Shooters.
Smart-Casual. M E N: Jeans are fine (no shorts), Shirts with collar, proper shoes (no sneakers, no sandals) L A D I E S: Pretty much anything goes (apart from beach-wear!) Opening Hours: 12:00noon - 03:00am. TIP: For some unknown reason, this bar becomes *the* place to be during the Holy Month of Ramadhan, when all other bars are quieting-down and taking it easy... what fun we had! Leave a Comment

Entrance to Issimo by sue_stone Issimo is located in the Hilton Dubai Creek, just off the lobby. It is billed as "Dubai's most cosmopolitan venue", and if that is true then I shudder to think what other bars are like! Not that Issimo was terrible, but it wasn't anything special. We stopped in for a drink one evening, after returning from a trip into the desert. The bar was fairly busy, but there were tables available. Although we were seated in a non-smoking area it was still a bit smoky. And it was very loud - there was a large screen on the wall and they were showing the Live 8 DVD, with various bands thrashing it out. Not really helping to create a stylish "Martini Bar" atmosphere.
We were dressed very casually and were still served, though most people were smart casual. Leave a Comment Theme: Eating and DrinkingAddress: Hilton Dubai Creek, Beniyas Road, Deira, DubaiPhone: +971 4 2271111Website: http://www.hiltondubaicreek.com/ Other Contact: info.creek@hilton.com

Playing pool at Aussie Legends, Dubai (April 2008) by JessH, 3 more photos It can sometimes be very difficult to draw the line between "restaurant" & "night spot" in Dubai... most night spots are simply eateries that are taken over by a cocktail & beer-induced crowd, louder music and lots of fun & laughter later in the evening. Aussie Legends is actually a restaurant, but it has been adopted by the social-scene of Dubai as a pub/night spot that serves food & shows sports when the live-bands are not playing... a concoction that works very well for the venue! The clientele consists not only of homesick Aussies, but expatriates from all over the world, especially during coverage of major sporting events. I usually head-down (from Cactus Cantina on the 8th floor of the same hotel!) with my friends on a Thursday afternoon/evening to take advantage of the free cocktails for girls from 02:00pm - 07:00pm while the boys enjoy a couple of rounds on the pool table. It's a lively sports pub with a collection of flags suspended from the roof, old tennis rackets on the wall, and chalkboard drawings of wombats, emus & kangaroos. Entertainment is provided by 3 guitarists playing rock & oldie favourites. Of course there's also a pool table, a miniature football-table and large TV screens showing all the action of Cricket, Aussie Rules, Formula One, Football, etc. The menu adds a Down Under twist to all of your usual pub-grub favourites, and you'll always find something to fit your craving and appetite on their menu; every single dish is a real mouth-watering treat! Their Fish 'n' Chip come with breaded mussels... delish! The ambience is always relaxed and laid back (typically Australian!). A great place to go for a game of pool and a few pints, or just for a snack and the chance to chill out at a great, unpretencious place that does not aspire to the usual "Dubai high-class chic" that can usually start wrecking your nerves (and your wallet!)
Casual, Casual, Casual... Opening Hours: Fri - Weds 03:00pm - 03:00am. Thursdays: 12 midday - 03:00am. Every Monday, join their BrainTeaser QUIZ NIGHT and win free drinks & various prizes. Would you know what the largest island in the Mediterranean is? Or which Star Wars movie received an Academy Award nomination? UPDATE April 2008: Aussie Legends is the only restaurant in this hotel that still allows smoking inside. Leave a Comment

Koubba, awash in the warm glow of an ambience which is distinctly arabesque, is probably my favourite bar in all of Dubai. I'm addicted to watching the sun set from this rooftop bar - far across the Arabian Gulf, while being nestled in a comfy sofa out on the terrace, with an excellent collection of cocktails at hand to make the moment... just perfect. The decor inside is warm and sexy, with a bar area lying adjacent to cozy, cordoned off divan settings. Pick a drink, but don't linger inside too long, because the magic to this place is to be found when you step outside. Out onto the ocean spreading far and wide beyond you, with a stunning view of the Al Qasr hotel's pools and gondola-filled canals right below you. The cocktails do nicely in sustaining the magic... innovative little potions like the Golden Shooter (a vodka/ daquiri concoction) and the Blue Kamikaze. The place also whips up some excellent coffees, but mind you, there isn't any food menu at Koubba. It's all about spirits in here, and they're kept at a heady rhythm, helped along by the hushed smooth jazz flowing from indoors. If you're a sunset lover, if you're a cocktail lover, hell - if you're a lover period, be prepared to fall for Koubba. Leave a Comment Theme: Adult SpotDirections: Once you step into Al Qasr at Madinat in Jumeirah, head right for the narrow little passageway which will lead you to Koubba

Peppermint club is strange to say the least: it's a club that has recently been "shifted" to a new location (until Aug. 2007 it used to be located inside the Fairmont Hotel). At the club's "VIP tables" Dubai's pretentious socialites can book a space for a couple of thousand Dirhams, including 2 or 3 bottles of overpriced vodka. They also wear belts with feathers and tassels; French caps or sparkly cowboy hats... Oh, did I mention yet? Dress to Ueber-Impress in this place! I've been here a few times (this club is only open on Fridays) and I'm sure that if this is your scene, you may just enjoy yourself a bit. The music is mostly techno, hard house, drum 'n' bass, etc. and the clientele is extremely pompous; holding their chins up high & making sure they're at the place to be seen, and of course always with the right crowd of people... I've usually found that I enjoy 2 or 3 songs, only to be disappointed by some hard-core remix of an 80s classic tune. This is simply not my scene so you won't see me or my friends here any time soon... This said, I have to give Peppermint its due as it also manages to book some international DJs such as Armin van Buuren, Timo Maas, Paul van Dyk, etc. on a regular basis. So if you like this type of music you'll have a blast at this place! The club is definitely worth a visit on special nights. Just make sure to get there early or purchase tickets in advance. Visit their website for upcoming events.
DOOR POLICY WARNING: Get there early as queues start to build-up around 11pm & be prepared for some possible scrutinizing & rude comments by the bouncers who are known to unfortunately be quite racist (even though the club denies this). Also, this is one of the clubs that is very stringent & doesn't really let men enter by themselves. So either bring a date or try to ask a girl at the entrance if you can walk in with her. Even then, if you don't look "important" enough you may be refused entry, so dress to impress! It gets extremely crowded, and I've seen fights & minor scuffles happen quite a few times. The drinks are over-priced & this is one of the very few clubs in town that actually charge an entrance fee, even for women. Entrance Fee: around Dhs 90 per person. Opening Hours: 09:00pm until 03:00am (Fridays only) SUMMARY: If you like hard & loud dance music with international DJs and a clubbing-obsessed crowd then this is the place for you! Leave a Comment

Flashes of Dubai, from a Velvet Lounge window by Siddha3th, 1 more photos This one's a true hidden gem. Tucked away within the unsavoury environs of the plasticky Al Khaleej Palace Hotel, The Velvet Lounge goes totally against the grain of its host hotel in breathing sensual, ornate elegance. The harem-like interiors - replete with gorgeous, comfy couches and divans, and irresistibly sexy lighting may be offering Arabian exotica by numbers, but when the result is this chilled out, who really cares? Lay back against the cushions, put the wine to your lips, and watch Dubai the crazy diamond shine on from 10 floors up. The views stretch far and wide, making this the most beautiful of experiences. Little interesting flourishes, like antique books strewn around by the windows, do well to deepen the velvet atmosphere. And the music does nothing to dampen the mood - a heady blend of lounge and fusion played at just the right tempo and volume. The newly added sushi bar at The Velvet, means that this is one place which I'm going to add to your Dubai hitlist. Hey, you don't want to start arguing with me at this stage - I know what's right for you.
Sneakers, T's, etc. would kind of be at odds with the V.L. vibe, make up your own mind. Leave a Comment Theme: Adult SpotDirections: Al Khaleej Palace Hotel, Deira - up on the 10th Floor.

Vodka in a mug, why not? (Rock Bottom's, Dubai) by JessH, 4 more photos No matter how many new & pumping clubs open up around town, at least once a month I find myself being drawn-back to this place... it's a tradition, a legend, a classic. If you're looking for a fancy clientele with zen interiors and sophisticated cocktails: this is not the place for you ;-) This is a place where you'll get laughed at for showing up with a shirt & tie or a Burberry purse - so just relax, kick back & go with the grubby, jagged & rocky flow. First opened in August 1996, Rock Bottom's has had its ups-n-downs, but at the end of the day if you've been having a boring & expensive night at any of the new & flashy clubs in Dubai, walk into Rock Bottom's and you're always guaranteed a great crowd, great music & an atmosphere you can't beat! Like most nightspots in the city, it transforms from a casual restaurant in the early evening to a pumping club towards the wee hours... Food is good & affordable, with your usual burgers, lasagnes & grills but unfortunately no nice vegetarian choices. The decor reminds of an American biker-bar (actually, they have 3 bars in there so you never have to go thirsty), with pool tables, dining booths in red leather & a medium-sized dancefloor & stage for the live bands. > Ladies Night (2 free drinks) EVERY NIGHT exept Thursday! > TUESDAYS: Free champagne (or Vodka Mixers in an authentic Rock Bottom's Mug) for ladies all night. > FRIDAYS Karaoke & select drinks for only 2 Dhs (50 $cents!) for ladies! No matter what night of the week, what time of the year, you'll always find a great crowd and pumping music (everything from Rock oldies, Pop, Dance, Reggae, etc.) with the DJ & live band switching places every 30-45 min.
BOYS: Smart-casual. Jeans are fine, but just to be safe guys should wear shirt with collar. Sneakers are fine but no sandals. GIRLS: just bring a smile and I.D. and in you go. Opening Hours: 7 days a week, 12noon - 03:00am. TIP: If you're feeling brave, try the notorious "Bullfrog" - all white spirits with a dash of Blue Curacao & Red Bull (it comes in a pint glass) --> UPDATE April 2008: This year's TimeOutDubai Awards rated Rock Bottom's number 16 out of the top 50 nightclubs in the city.
