'Scent of a Woman', under the stars by Siddha3th When the weather's all chilly and beautiful, Dubai throws up quite a few unexpected surprises. One of these is 'Movies under the Stars', evenings of film screened on the rooftop at Wafi. Casual's the rule here - bean bags are strewn all over the lawns, you land up with your own blankets, settle down with a beer from the beverage stand... and chill out to a double-bill. The setting's so perfect, the movie doesn't even have to be any good :) This one's a seasonal thing, and lasts only as long as the good weather does.
Just be yourself! Casual's the rule... it's all good! Leave a Comment Theme: OtherDirections: Rooftop at Wafi, entrance through Carter's

Vu's Bar is a stylish cocktail bar located on the 51st floor of the Hotel Tower of the Jumeirah Emirates Towers (two massive modern skyscrapers). As you can imagine, from the bar there are fabulous views of the city and out to the Arabian Gulf. The narrow room is moodily lit, with a bar running down the middle, and seating at both ends and along the windows. We stopped in one evening to admire the view and have a drink. Drink prices are steep, but you are paying for the location remember.

Whatever your pleasure, you're sure to find something at the Marine Beach Resort that'll quench your thirst. The DMBR's one of Dubai's most frequented entertainment resorts - thanks to the excellent collection of restaurants, bars and clubs within the Hotel & Spa complex. When it comes to food, everything from tasty Tex Mex (The Alamo) to funky Cuban cuisine (Malecon) is on the platter. In Sho Chos, the Beach Resort has got one of the more interesting places around, the stylish sushi bar boasting one of the city's most breathtaking views from the outdoor terrace. Then there's Boudoir, the Parisian-styled club, with lots of air kissing and not nearly enough real kissing. Ah well, to each his/ her own ;-)
Depends on which joint you enter into! Leave a Comment Theme: Eating and DrinkingDirections: In Jumeirah, at the very beginning of Beach Road.

Concert + Memory stubs by Siddha3th When it comes to big open air concerts, Dubai's yet to hit the right groove. But it's getting there. On the flip side of the coin, there's the washed up yesteryear diva who'll gladly drop in, keeping the illusion of his/her flailing career alive with one last performance - (take a bow, Gloria Gaynor, Bryan Ferry, and, umm.. Sister Sledge). Happily, we've had some real legends grace our shores too - Roger Waters & Mark Knoppfler have both held legendary concerts. Indie favourites like Lloyd Cole have started dropping in regularly as well, playing to the intimate club faithful. But what's a city without it's own music festival, right? Cue, the Gig on the Green & The Desert Rock Festival, both boasting the international names (Suede, Fun Lovin' Criminals, The Darkness, Sepultura) and homegrown talent (Juliana Down, Nervecell) required to kickstart any hopes of a scene. Next step: A venue that can actually pack in more than 10,000. Next stop: Our own Big Day Out. Inshallah. Leave a Comment Theme: Concert

Uber-chic in its decor, and very tasteful with its lighting, The Blue Bar is a laid-back haven for sexy Thursday nights. This place has a very cool wine list, which somehow seems more suited to the surroundings than ordering the usual pint :) Most importantly, they've get a stellar cast of session musicians to come down and lay down the blues/ jazz up the place on Wednesday & Thursday nights. Very intoxicating. Very blue.
You don't have to dress up, but the jeans and sneakers aren't recommended either! Leave a Comment Theme: Live MusicDirections: The Novotel Hotel, Sheikh Zayed Road, behind World Trade Center.

One of Dubai's livelier restaurants/ bars, Carter's undergoes a stunning transformation daily - changing from elegant restaurant to a hot, throbbing bar from 11 onwards. Falling in love with this place is not all that hard, especially on Sunday nights (when all-night cocktails cost just 10 bucks!) and Tuesdays (Happy Hour night, with beers costing around 12 bucks!). They've got a resident DJ, and spice things up regularly by holding theme nights and getting in the odd live act. Simply, Carter's is a pretty nice place to feel alive and become one with Dubai's night. Leave a Comment Theme: Eating and DrinkingDirections: At Wafi, in the restaurant enclave.

This annual festival has firmly stapled itself onto the city's music calendar. First year was excellent. Second year was very, very good. The third year, they closed with Electric Light f***in' Orchestra. Okay, so the standards may be dipping beyond belief, but Dubai's International Jazz Fest is unabashedly about style over substance. Spread out over 4 concert stages at Dubai Media City's beautiful concert grounds, the Jazz Fest just can't be beat for setting. The lawns and lakes of DMC form the perfect backdrop to the music, with the cold December-Jan weather wrapping all concert-goers in an unforgettable hug. The festival-like atmosphere is pushed along by the food stalls, alcohol stands, promo booths and art tents lining the parameters of the grounds. Yes, it's shamelessly commercial. Yes, you don't need sales girls coming up to you with the latest perfume from Paris while you're floating from one venue to the next. But everything's forgiven everytime the breeze kicks up, and the saxophonist packs in even a half-way decent solo punch. Now if only they could get their line-up sorted out. Ok, you're paying for the view - but what a view it is!! Vu's Bar is on the 51st floor of the smaller of the two Emirates Towers and provides a setting in which you can enjoy a drink while overlooking Dubai. Situated in the triangular part at the top of the tower, and with large glass windows looking out over Sheikh Zayed Road towards the sea, Vu's Bar is a great place for an early evening beer. The bar (and Vu's Restaurant on the 50th floor) are reached via a glass-fronted lift that also affords great views over Dubai. If you don't like the sound of that, there's a conventional lift (ie that you can't see out of!) which will also take you up there. In fact, the glass fronted lift only goes as high as the 40th floor, so you'll have to change to the other lift at that point anyway. Prices are pretty steep: 330ml bottles of imported beer cost 29 Dirhams (approx 5GBP / 7.50 Euros), as does Stella Artois on draft (the only draft beer). Still less than you'd pay in some parts of Scandinavia! The cheapest wine costs 27 Dirhams a glass, while soft drinks can be had for a relatively modest 12 Dirhams (2GBP / 3 Euros). When you order a drink you do get an impressive assortment of free nibbles (little cheese biscuits and various nuts). A brief review of the bar, and a number of comments from visitors can be found here: http://www.worldsbestbars.com/city/dubai/vus-bar-dubai.htm
For men: Long trousers (no shorts!), shoes (no trainers or open sandals) and a shirt with a collar. UAE national dress also acceptable. Leave a Comment

Dancer performance by Rinjani Trilogy is one of the hottest night club at town. Situated in Mina As Salam, Jumeirah Beach Road, the club is a fancied by party go-er. Trilgy has a huge dance floor with a house music and a classy style decoration. Especially in Thursday night, people need to queing to enter the club (don’t forget to bring your id) There is no dress code (but wear your shoes please), but usually the visitors are dress-up people and honestly, people look so fancy.
No sneakers please. Dress casual, but it's time to show off :) Leave a Comment Theme: NightclubAddress: Madinat JumeirahPhone: 04 366 6917Directions: Madinat Jumeirah is located in Jumeirah Beach Road

QDs (short for Quarter Deck) is another one of those fashionable & gorgeous outdoor nightspots that just can't seem to get *everything* right. This the ultimate place to chill out at one of the many tables right by the water's edge, or get there early and grab yourself a comfy Arabic sofa. This place is pretty big, but it fills-up with regulars very quickly. There are also some nice individual Arabic tents that are great for the colder months to escape the wind-chill :-) Order yourself a drink (or a tea if you're driving...) have a Sheesha (water pipe) and watch the world drift past you on the historic Dubai Creek. But may I recommend that you don't come here on an empty stomach. This isn't fine dining, and they really could make a better effort with the food. The menu only features snack items & pizza, but much like its big brother (Boardwalk Restaurant) it's a real shame: one of the best venues in the city; yet the food is less than appetizing. We ordered some Arabic cheese breads which were alright. The broccoli & cheese balls *tasted* ok, but we both had an upset stomach afterwards (and I have a strong stomach!) Our friend Siddharth had some Kebab sticks which seemed ok.
Dress-Code is casual (and bring a jacket in the winter months!) So, my tip for you? Stick to the excellent drinks served by the friendly bar staff, and enjoy a Sheesha! (may I recommend Mint Sheesha together with a pitsher of "Creek Party" cocktail...) Early evenings sees QDs as a relaxed place to chill and hang-loose, and later on a DJ entertains the crowd on the medium-sized dance floor with the usually chart hits and pop classics. I love watching the numerous dinner-cruises whizzing past, some with cheesy music and what seem to resemble old Xmas lights blinking on the windows... you've gotta pity the "regular tourist", for he hasn't discovered the joy of observing the Creek from its shore & not from an overcrowded boat. Sometimes it's best to take a step back, and not be in the "middle of the action"... Opening Hours: Fridays & Saturdays: 05:00pm - 02:00am. Sundays to Thursdays: 06.00pm - 02:00am. > They don't accept reservations unless you are a large group (8 or more). Leave a Comment
