 | Dubai Nightlife | Tips 61 - 70 of 140 | | I must not be very culturally attuned, 'cause Scarlett's keeps getting awarded the title of being the best bar in Dubai by pretty much every publication in town, but the place doesn't do a thing for me. The problem might lie in the fact that the place doesn't quite know what to be - a friendly sports bar, a restaurant serving colourful tex-mex, a hip dive for affluent 20-somethings, or a lounge terminal for cabin crew and the vultures who flock diligently after them. As a result of this schizophrenia, an evening at Scarlett's is a bit of a mish-mash in itself. A few good things it does have going for it are an excellent maitré 'd, a mean mojito, and a god serving of tortillas. The rest is just a blurred, hurried pot-pourri of flavours, with no one taste being able to distinguish itself from the rest. It seemed highly unlikely to me to find a funky lounge and club on the ground floor of something as bland as a convention centre, but that's exactly what the Novotel in Dubai has succeeded in creating: Lotus One markets itself as an Asian "fusion restaurant" that is open for lunch and dinner, and later-on in the evening transforms into a swanky & trendy cocktail lounge and club. The music choice is generally chill-out lounge, later blended with funky house and some R'n'B. If you can live with the occasionally slow bar service and manage to ignore the "I-wear-my-sunglasses-at-night" posers (the people I like to call *nose lifters*, looking down their noses at the entire world) there is quite an enjoyable evening to be had, especially if the DJ hits your exact taste of music on their various different clubs evenings. The doormen can be tough & it can be a bit tricky to get inside (they have a big thing about imaginary *guest lists* at clubs in Dubai) even if you have plenty of ladies in your party, so my recommendation is to book a table, get down there early, enjoy some food and relax before the party-crowd spills in at around 11:30pm. Lotus One is also mentioned on the website "world’s best bars.com". However, it's important to note here that apparently Lotus One has suffered from the usual social-slide and that service, food and ambience used to be a lot better last year (2007). It seems the staff and management had built themselves a good reputation, but now no longer put in enough effort into keep up their highest standards. Nevertheless, this is still a very swanky & decorative (albeit slightly cheesy) club and lounge, and definitely recommended for a nice night with the young and stylish yuppies of Dubai. I'd recommend coming here with a group of minimum 4 to 6 people to really enjoy your evening and just ignore any snobs in the vicinity! ;-)

Just some tips to my fellow aussie, kiwi and south african friends,..... Be very wary of this so called "glitz and glamour" Dubai. My husband and I (He is 30, I am 25) have just relocated here from Sydney as he is a mech eng and for financal reasons we moved for a 2 year contract. He has to go to Saudi four days per week and whilst we are looking for approprioate living we are living in an apartment at the Grosvenor House. Whilst he is away (as i refuse to go to Saudi) I am alone...let me tell you....apparently the totaly stupidity of every western and local man is that if you are blonde, you must MUST be a prosititue and if you are attractive, forget about it. IT is NON stop staring, crude remarks,,,constant "how much, we have friendship" is just out of this world. I would never advise any one to come here ever ever ever. The sleaze, disgust nad absolute total revolsion of the Brits here saying this, not just locals. YOU MUST keep in mind, no matter what they say as a woman you can not do aussie, kiwi style and tell them to P!ss off as you can get arrested for swearing at a local...it is true, if you are blonde and in Dubai you MUST be a hooker, please, what a joke. i can't stand it nad would do anytihng to get out...they are rude and as a woman you have no rights.....look beyond the glammour mate cos what you get here as a young woman (esp my fellow blondes) is absolute bulls*** as you have no right to defend. i would do anything not to feel like this, constant stares and requests for paid sex. Um, helllooo....do they not know there are blondes all over the world, shock horror, even in Italy...hahha, i know some aboriginals with blonde hair. so yeh, just a word of advise girls, develop a thick skin and deal with it or dont come, i wish i had done teh latter. Being from oz and having the right to human rights andtelling people to leave you alone is def something i took for granted. Theme: Nightclub

Don’t step in here for atmosphere. The vibe, as it is, is dark, seedy and of an altogether soulless nature. Tables arranged geometrically in a large music hall sort of space, a large bar area where even the alcohol bottles appear to be depressed out of their skulls! But fear not, the Music Room lends ample credence to its name, with a fairly impressive 1-2 punch of current performing bands. The Flipside are a jazz quintet, who venture into slightly rockier territory from time to time. The female lead singer holds her own, but the guitarist/male vocalist’s gravelly voice seems more suited to some interesting takes on Baker Street, and the like. Next up on the roster are The Rock Spyders. Despite the Philipino outfit’s sad-80s moniker and cartoon-like stage presence (co-ordinated ‘peroxide-hair-bashing’!), they pack an enthusiastic little punch with some loud, abrasive renderings of The Scorpions, The Eagles, and some more of the same. A good little 2-hour music pit stop, enough to quench the thirst and air the lungs, before heading on elsewhere into the night. The trendy New Asia Bar is full of trendy types who love to dress to impress (and pose!). Drinks are expensive at AED40 for a Corona and cocktails start at around AED50 but the music is good and the surroundings classy. The focal point of the place is the giant Polynesian statue above the circular bar and the floor to ceiling glass windows which have great views over the city! Open 19.00 - 03.00.

360 at the Jumeirah Beach hotel is an open air bar built on a jetty with great views of ocean, Burj al Arab and JBH. It was packed Thursday to Saturday. You are supposed to put yourself on the guest list to get in, but we didn't get asked for that. Perhaps this was because we were staying at the hotel. If you get there about 6 there is a lovely sunset, the music was OK but a bit formulaic. Music on Thursday and Friday was hardish house, with 'chillout' on Saturday. There are some great shisha pipes with a huge selection of tobacco, and if you get there early there are some nice loungers to sit on...note that these were getting pretty dirty so don't wear your white jeans ! Drinks were extortionate but nice.

Yeah, the old crooner - together with his coterie of rat pack cohorts - would definitely have dug this place. They’d have felt right at home in the cool as ice lounging area, luxuriously laidback couches, suitably dimmed mood lighting and all. They would've approved of the bar’s song-influenced drink selection, including some potently vagrant jazz cocktails. And they wouldn’t have minded Cooz’ resident singer one bit as well. An Eartha Kitt follower, dipping often into standards from Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald and ‘ol Blue Eyes himself. Her raspy, whiskey-soaked voice complementing the bar’s setting and ethos rather well. Mr. Sinatra might have taken issue with the bar area’s less-than-flattering view of the Grand Hyatt’s lobby though. He would, in fact, have given management a right old dressing down over it. But suitably calmed by a few shots of JD, he would’ve sunk back into his couch, let the music wash back over him, and winked his distinct approval of Cooz. Decadently cosmopolitan... sleek bar stools and antique chairs invite you to come on over and sample some wine. But the low-sunk sofas seem just that bit more inviting. Soft lights in amber cast a pretty langurous glow on proceedings. The jazz singer and her ivory tinkler companion rustle up a decent enough offering of Sinatra and Sade. You could spend an evening in many worse ways than this... The Bahri Bar gets a well-deserved nod for its detail to ambience... the al fresco seating area, throwing up a bewitching vista of the Madinat's winding waterways and the Gulf beyond, is one of the best places to share a drink and conversation in. The bar gets a few marks deducted though, for the lethargy and plain forgetfullness of some of the waiting staff. Minor quibble this, one which is soon washed away by the blissful pervading atmosphere. ... time to hit them 12 bar blues again.
