(Unlicensed - no alcoholic beverages) Forget Starbucks! Don't tell me you're one of those clones that runs there because everyone else does... I passionately boycott Starbuck's & anyway: there's much better coffee out there (and slightly cheaper!) I prefer visiting independant cafes, but if there's one chain of coffee-stores that I actually enjoy, it's Gloria Jean's Coffees: the first Australian franchised coffee shop to open in the UAE, and by far not as "aggressive" as Starbucks... you can't find them at every corner, and I like it that way :-) Apart from that, I also like supporting Australian brands. Their Mocca Chillers and Iced Cappuccinos (9 different flavours, mixing espresso with everything from chocolate flavouring to cookies & mint) are superb! Gloria Jean's also retails freshly roasted gourmet coffee beans in 24 varieties, such as Vanilla infused, German chocolate cake, hazelnut, decaffeinated, etc. The cafe also serves an assortment of food; and their sandwiches, cakes, salads and pastries have greatly improved over the past few years... TIP: If you do feel peckish, try one of their fresh crepes; Scrumptious! Choose whether your crepe should be sweet or savory, and then pick your toppings. They have special children's menu, as well as a special summer promotion offering a free Mocha Chiller Promotions Card to every customer, as well as the all-year-around Frequent Sippers Club: Receive 1 free cup for every 10 cups. To cut a long story short: I absolutely love meeting friends at Gloria Jean's, or simply running in and grabbing an Iced Cappucino to keep me cool whilst driving around in my car. Staff are usually very friendly and funny. Shoppers visit Gloria Jean's for their great flavour-infused coffees and for a spot of people-watching, and to quote their slogan: "escape the daily grind"... Opening Hours: 09:00am - 11:00pm.
Favourite drink: Regular Iced Cappucino (large, of course!) without whipped cream. Favourite snack: Hot banana crepe with chocolate sauce... (gives you the energy to carry-on shopping... haha!) PRICES 2008: large cappucino: Dhs 16.- double chocolate muffin: Dhs 7.- --> UPDATE March 2008: There is now also a Drive-Through Gloria Jean's, located at the petrol station just outside the residential area of Mirdif. UPDATE August 2008: Gloria Jean's now supports fair trade produce. It also serves "Driving thru" service. If you drive or ride a taxi, just stop by and the waiter will approach you to take your order. The price is very cheap. For Swarma and Sheesh Tawook cost around 2 Dirham. With 10 Dirham, you can get a great taste food.

Peppercrab, Grand Hyat Dubai by Rinjani The restaurant is specialized in serving yummy taste, tongue teaser for their delicious crabs recipe. Peppercrab serves Singaporean and Asian dishes, tasty and fulfilling. The recommended menu is crabs in black pepper or chilli crab. It’s a bit pricy for the serve of giant crabs, (the price will be calculated per 100 grams of crab weight) but it’s worth for the taste. Another recommendation,? Try Nasi Goreng (Fried rice) and Es Kachang for the desert. Don’t worry to being messed by a eating crabs. They will serve the crabs cracker and you are free to use your hands and searching for the hidden crab meat in the shell without worry to spill the sauce. The waitress will give you napkin to cover your shirt. The atmosphere of the restaurant is really cozy with a view of the outdoor garden setting on two sides of the restaurant. Tall trees, timber bridges and trickling soft water. It is artificial, but you can’t resist to say “it’s cozy”.

(Licensed - serves alcoholic beverages) Panini is a real insider-secret amongst Dubai coffee sippers and people watchers. Prices are slightly higher than in other coffee shops, but this is a 5-star hotel after all. It's tucked away in the lush tropical gardens of the Grand Hyatt Hotel, with 4 gigantic "Dhows" (traditional Arabic boats) looming from the glass ceiling above you. (click picture to see them) It's one of my favourite places in the city & perfect for the summer months when you are confined to the air-conditioned indoors, but yearn for greenery, trees & sunlight. This Italian cafe and deli carries a selection of specialty coffees, panini sandwiches, cakes, fruit tarts, cookies, chocolates, truffles, pralines, pastries & homemade gelati. Gourmet gifts such as chocolate truffles, olive oils, pasta, biscotti & various other treats are available.... yummy! Their bakery also offers its complete menu for takeaway, as well as a wide selection of items for retail including top quality olive oils, balsamic vinegars & Italian preserves. This is also the only place in Dubai where you can buy "Giotto" almond & cream chocolates.
My favourites are their various vegetable quiches, muffins & the strawberry cheesecake, and of course coffee, coffee, coffee... Opening Hours: Friday to Tuesday: 08:00am - 01:00am. Wednesday & Thursday: 08:00am - 02:00am. This is also a superb photo opportunity for some "unusual" holiday snaps in this desert country ;-) Leave a Comment

Mandy meat by Rinjani My sister recommends this place and the result, I like it a lot. It's nice to visit the restaurant with a group of friends. Once, you enter the restaurant, you will find people sitting in the carpet, sharing a plate of yellow rice topped with meat and chicken. The restaurant has two sections, for male and female. If your group consists of male and female, the waiter will lead you to the back side of restaurant, where the room divided by small tent sections.
Mandy Meat (Rice, chicken and lamb served in one plate) The food is nice. And after you finish, you can wash your hand and use the cologne served near the cashier. Picnic Home in Bur Dubai by Siddha3th If you're like me, you'll be addicted to small eating joints. You know the kind - the ones that enjoy cult status among a rabid, ravenous faithful. The ones you don't really refer to by name, more like "that little place around the corner." Well, Dubai has plenty of these, with Picnic Home being a personal favourite. This is a tiny Lebanese joint, specializing in grilled meats. It's located right on the edge of a road, so your eating experience is enhanced by the nightlife whizzing by. To say the prices are cheap and the food is tasty would be understatements of the year! Let go of your inhibitions and dive into the working class hero crowd!!
A thing that's tasty is a joy forever. Which brings me to the Shawarma. This should be your compulsory introduction to Arabia :) Grilled meat wrapped in a bread/ naan type roll, filled with sauces, mayo and fries, and topped off with a little lettuce. Aah, heaven! (Licensed - serves alcoholic beverages) This is by far one of Dubai's nicest venues for an al fresco eatery. But let's forget about the food, drinks and service for a moment: the location is simply stunning. Don't bother coming here in summer; visiting the Boardwalk is strictly for the cooler winter months, because sitting outside right by the water's edge is what you come here for. Built on a wooden terrace over the creek, diners can take in a stunning view of the city. See the rich & ostentatious chug by & park their luxury yachts whilst dodging the small wooden "Abras" whizzing around them. This is Dubai: the old is constantly clashing with the new, and somehow it's amusing and it works. Service is attentive but not overdone. There's a 2nd bar outside so and in winter (when true desert-dwellers like me actually feel cold at night!) they provide outdoor heaters. The restaurant is open 7 days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
We met with a few work colleagues for dinner: John had the traditional fish 'n' chips; a generous portion of 2 crispy Hammour (grouper) fillets and nice chips. I had the vegetarian lasagne; a relatively small portion but I wasn't too hungry & also planning on dessert ;-) A colleague had the lamb with grilled vegetables and was happy with the flavour & quality. For dessert we ordered cheesecake, which was OK but I've had better. The restaurant (understandably) specialises in seafood & grilled meats, but also offers some vegetarian options and traditional favourites such as pasta or salads. Most dishes are good, few are excellent and unfortunately many are disappointingly bland. The only reason I give this restaurant such a high rating is its location & service. The views & reasonable price tag are what really make this place special. If you don't want to take your chances with their menu, come here anyway & switch to a "liquid diet" of drinks & discussion for the evening. --> TIP: For nice drinks & Sheesha (water pipe) visit the adjacent QDs (more info in my Nightlife Tips) Opening Hours: Daily from 08:00am – 12:00 midnight. NOTE: they don't accept any table reservations so you have to get there early! Wish I was back in the city Instead of this old bank of sand. With the sun beating down over the roof tops And the one I love so close at hand. If I had wings and I could fly, I know where I would go. But right now I'll just sit here so contentedly And watch the river flow. (Bob Dylan, Watching the River flow) Leave a Comment

Cozy seating area, Shakespeare & Co. (Dubai) by JessH, 4 more photos (Unlicensed - no alcoholic beverages) Shakespeare & Co is a homegrown UAE chain of coffee shops with locations across the city. All branches offer both indoor and outdoor seating in a classical, French stately home-themed atmosphere with an antique décor made-up of distressed wood, heavy drapes and colourful cushions on Victorian-style sofas. Don't wear anything with a strong floral pattern here... you'll be invisible! The menu is extensive and prices are reasonable, especially for their variety of breakfast specials that come with your choice of eggs, toast, condiments, juice & coffee/tea. Unfortunately, you can never seem to have it all in Dubai: although they have a) great locations b) lovely surroundings c) great food d) and good prices, Shakespeare & Co. has become infamous amongst Dubai coffee-sippers for its notoriously abysmal service & incapable waiting staff. But, if you're willing to calmly explain your order thrice once you've managed to flag-down a passing, dreamy-eyed waiter, the whole experience is quite pleasant & still a firm favourite of the Dubai coffee & lunching-culture.
The various breakfast specials are great value-for-menu with good-sized portions. The English breakfast costs AED 30.- and comes with your choice of eggs, toast, condiments, hash brown, bacon & sausage (you can also order a vegetarian version) juice and your choice of coffee or tea. UPDATE March 2008: The breakfast special now costs AED 40.- per person. For lunch or dinner, their pizzas are thin & crispy (but the toppings are sometimes a bit bland), the pasta with Salmon & spinach is very nice. Good salads here as well. 1 US Dollar = 3.67 AED Opening Hours: 07:00am - 02:00am. Eat&Drink, Dubai by Rinjani If you love a big portion with a less pay, you will love Eat & Drink. Eat & Drink restaurant locations spread out all over Dubai. From Jumeirah to Al Gharhoud area. It’s worth for the money and it’s worth for the taste as well. They serve various food from Chinese to Lebanese. The price range from 5 Dirham to 30 Dirham. Beside the food that you order, they will give you big bunch of Arabic bread, Hummos and pickles. I use to take one portion of Eat&Drink for two or three persons sharing, or I can take it for two time meals. They accept order for delivery, and also if you are in rush, just drive thru and the server will take your order and deliver it to your car. The Colonnade, Jumeirah Beach Hotel by Rinjani If you fancy dining experience, The Colonnade is one of the best choices. Located in Jumeirah Beach Hotel (Jumeirah Beach Road), the restaurant is situated in ground floor near the shopping arcade.
The restaurant has several sections such as Chinese and oriental food, Arabic food, Italian to pastry and dessert section. Friday brunch is a great time to taste all the food sections. The price is little above average, but the food is great.
