BURJUMAN MALL: BURJUMANIA!

The marketing spiel tells us that BurJuman is 'a better class of shopping'. And the mall certainly lives up to that. We're talking more exclusive, high-end stuff here, especially among the clothing outlets. Due to this pricey nature, BurJuman doesn't attract the hordes like City Centre does. What's special about this place is the various special events they keep hosting - photography exhibits, cultural showcases and the coup de grace.. an annual Art & Music Festival.

Paris Gallery - ideal for that last minute gift. Perfumes, timepieces, beauty products... these guys have it all.

Grand Electronics - being a VTer, you obviously love photography :) Well, Grand is the place you'll get the latest in digital and professional advanced cameras. Grand's the exclusive dealer for Nikon Cameras, and the sales staff here's a pretty helpful bunch.

Barista - hey, enough with the shopping. Let's get to the important stuff - eating! The sandwiches here are delicious.

    Pashmina
  • Tip Rating:
  • In the cooler months, Pashmina is a-must-have fashion list for most of women in Dubai. It’s soft, warm, light and effortlessly make you look cool. Pashmina originates from Capra Hircus and Antelope goats which can be found in the high lands of Kashmir and Tibet. A soft part of the goat’s back results a beautiful and soft Pashmina.

The real Pashmina is quite expensive, and concerning of the conservation of those goats, many Pashmina seller sells “modified” Pashmina. In some shops, you will find that Pashmina will be classified into percentage of the mixture, such as 30 : 70, 20 : 80, 50 : 50, etc. Or, there is also pure synthetic material (the price is much cheaper)

Be careful if you shop in the market. You really need to know which “pure” Pashmina and the “fake” ones. The pure Pashmina is very soft and light. I saw the seller test the real Pashmina by sliding it into the ring. It slides smoothly. The price is around 370 Dirhams above (100% Pashmina). The mixture percentage of Pashmina is vary, between 25 to 250 Dirhams. You also need to bargain the price.
My favorite shop to buy Pashmina is in Central Souq, Sharjah (oops I have to put this information under Sharjah guide, but anyway…..) The price there is quite cheap.

DUBAI FESTIVAL CITY: A giant "Shopping City" within the city...

Once again, true to the concept of "a city, within a city, within a city..."
So, if you *still* haven't had enough of shopping malls & stores, another one of Dubai retail giants has opened on March 1st 2007: Dubai Festival City.
Located right on the creek close to Dubai Airport & the Garhoud Bridge, this is one massive "eyesore with a purpose".

Festival City is also the venue for various concerts & shows, and the following hotels have a presence here: Four Seasons, Intercontinental, Crowne Plaza and W Boutique Hotel.

    Complete with:
    > largest Marks n Spencer Store outside the UK.
    > Residential waterfront living.
    > Shops, shops... and more shops.
    > IKEA.
    > A Golf course.
    > "HyperPanda" Supermarket (I like this one... large variety & low prices)
    > Marsa Auto Gallery & Car Showroom.
    > ACE Hardware.
    > Restaurants & Cafes. (90 restaurants including 40 al fresco venues along the water... there will even be 8 licensed (serving alcohol) restaurants :-)
    > Gold Market Place.
    > did I mention shops? (550 to be precise!)

Once complete, this monster will have 2.1 million square foot of "urban retail resort". Dubai Festival City has over 3 kilometres of Creekside Corniche... something most of us Dubai residents will truly cherish because a nice venue so close to the water truly is rare!

    Opening Hours:
    Shopping Centre:
    Saturday - Friday: 10:00am - 12midnight.

    IKEA: Saturday - Friday: 10:00am - 10:00pm.

    HyperPanda Supermarket:
    Saturday - Wednesday: 09:00am - 12midnight.
    Thursdays: 09:00am - 01:00am & Fridays: 09:00am - 12midnight.

...we prefer to visit Dubai Festival City for their ever-expanding selection of great cafes and restaurants, especially the ones with outside seating along the "Canal Walk"... We have dinner here quite often, sitting outside, listening to the live musicians, enjoying the cool breeze... this place tries hard to mimic a European street-scene, and *fails gracefully* in doing so ;-)

In case you haven't yet noticed: Dubai has an obsession with YOUR credit card... so pay as much as you can afford.

UPDATE: Since January 2008 a smoking ban has come into effect in Dubai's shopping malls.

Lamcy Plaza: Lamcy Plaza, (Mind Your Credit Card, Fellow)
  • Tip Rating:
  • Lamcy Plaza is one of my favorit shopping mall. Located in Bur Dubai area, Lamcy offers a great variety of fancy stuffs. Just a small thing annoying that I find in Lamcy…..I could not stop my credit card stay in my wallet. Lamcy has seasonal discounts for their stuff.

If you are a fan of Dorothy Perkins, Camaieu, Guess, Tammy, Benetton, BHS, Lamcy is the right place to shop around. Don’t forget also to visit Mexx For Less, they usually have something for everybody with a great price.

Lamcy also has food court, Children’s Play area, supermarket, and don’t forget to visit Daiso in third floor. A Japanese shop which offer you household to food with a same fixed price (5 Dirham)

Al Ansari Money Exchange, internet to post office is also available here.

Lamcy is the only Mal in Dubai open in Friday morning. (Usually, in Friday, malls open starts at 2 PM)

Many things!! You just name it.

    Credit card and cash.

Bigger. Bolder. Brasher. Burjuman 2 is the new, oh-so-fancy extension to Burjuman. If you're a shopping addict, you'd think you'd died and gone to heaven. There's a steel & glass architectural vibe to the place, with high ceilings making the mall appear much larger than it actually is. The boring thing about Burjuman 2 is that everything's too richie-rich... no cool thrift stores to break the monotony of all the major brands. Suffice to say, instead of being under the shopping tips, Burjuman 2 comes under the category of window-shopping tips!

Harvey Nichols, Hugo Boss, Prada, Givenchy, Diesel, Donna Karan, Yves Saint Lauren - pick your vice.

Burjuman Center: Burjuman Center, One Stop Shopping
  • Tip Rating:
  • Another a-must-to-go shopping place is Burjuman Center. Located in Bur Dubai (in front of Regent Hotel) Burjuman has built extension shopping complex, which comprises of around 300 shops. From high street fashion such as Next, Esprit, Giordano, Diesel to world class designer. Let’s start with Louis Vuitton, Hermes, DKNY, Versace, Christian Dior , Chanel and the hottest is, Saks Fifth Avenue is also new open here. (you will love this place in Shopping festival season)

Saks Fifth Avenue has two levels. Level one is a place for fragrance and cosmetics, gifts, sunglasses to a nail studio. And level two is where the individual designer boutiques and collections can be found.

Also don’t forget to check my favorite shopping place, Massimo Dutti and Zara. They usually have something for everybody. And especially Massimo Dutti, they have a bunch of friendly and helpful staff.

The new Burjuman has a nice lay out and design. They usually also have events, such as fashion show, stage performance, etc.

Many things. From fashion, accessories to handbags, home appliance, electronic, etc.

    As you wish

The Gold Souk: The best value gold in the world?
  • Tip Rating:
  • Dubai is said to be one of the best value for money places in the world for buying gold.

In fact, there is a whole souk dedicated to selling all manner of gold jewellery.

The “Gold Souk” is located in Deira, not far from the creek, and consists of a long, shaded stretch of shops, which to me all seemed to be selling pretty much the same goods. I’m assured that the prices are very favourable, (I genuinely wouldn’t have a clue how much gold jewellery costs!), and the fact that this souk attracts so many well-heeled tourists would tend to back this up.

Even if you’re not looking to buy, it’s worth having a stroll through the souk to witness the seemingly endless window displays of shining gold!

Carrefour is the BEST place for shopping in Dubai. It has every thing you can think of. This hypermart located inside Deira City Centre offers products of great quality and variety at very reasonable prices. In other words, products here are real value-for-money. Carrefour is always crowded with hundreds of shoppers all the time.

You can also come to Carrefour in Al Shindagha near bus stop in Bur Dubai for your shopping needs. Timings are are 9 a.m. till midnight daily.

Carrefour has garments section, shoes, french bakery , electronics section, music zone, fruit and vegetables, frozen food, beauty products, food items, fitness equipment, garden equipment, fresh flowers, kitchen items, house plants, sports items, suitcases, carpets and other consumer items.

Often they have special promotional deals like buy three and pay for two. You would not resist buying items from Carrefour if you entered there. There is huge variety of products and one gets mad about what to buy and what to leave.

Prices are fixed so no need to think about bargaining.

    Union Cooperative: 24 Hours Shopping
  • Tip Rating:
  • There are two reasons why I like this place :
It opens for 24 hours and the fruits are usually fresh. Union Cooperative or familiar called as “Co-op” is a favorable shopping place for those who like to buy stuffs in large quantity. It’s an ideal place for family shopping.

Union Cooperative has its branches in several locations in Dubai. But my favorite is at opposite Safa Park (Al Wasl road) This place is usually crowded, especially in the morning and in the evening. You can find a lot of local people shopping here.
Union Cooperative has wide variety of dates (especially in Ramadan time), fresh fruits, cheese and olives. At olives section, you can taste their variety kind of olives. Taste them is recommended (I got one who is super sour)

In the second floor, you can also find Areej (beauty and cosmetic products), home appliance and clothes.

Cash and credit card (better cash)
