    Fun rides for the kids
    4 more images

Head for Ski Dubai for some snow sports anytime of the year. It feels particularly funky if you did this in summer, as generally one needs a resort at very high altitude to maintain enough snow-cover to facilitate skiing, or one needs to go to a glacier.

However, in Dubai you could ski/board/tobaggon even when it is 50 degrees Celsius outside (as it often is in summer).

At the lower edge you will find a snow park with various themes and rides for kids 7 nursery slopes to learn skiing/boarding.

The higher runs offer some challenging sections for more experienced skiiers.

Packages on offer are very economical: 2 hours skiing (including jacket/salopette hire, equipment, and ski pass) only costs 180 AED. you get a 10% discount if you wear your own gear. Gloves must be owned/purchased for hygiene reasons though. It's better value if you opt for a whole day of skiing/boarding, costing 320 AED. Season passes are also available!

Opening hours are long, right upto 2300 hours on certain days. And for the first Monday of every month there are freestyle nights, offering 3 hour sessions for the 2 hour price.

Equipment: Bring your own equipment or hire without fear! The ski sessions pricing includes equipment hire & a pass for the number of hours required.

10% discount available if your wear your own kit.

Gloves must be bought or bring your own.

The stadium comprises a 5,000 seat centre court, VIP area and Royal enclosure, press office, press interview rooms, ATP Tour offices, TV commentary boxes and changing rooms.

The event lasts from Feb 19th until Mar 3rd. I am definately attending in 2008.

We enjoy playing minigolf when we travel and also in Dubai we managed to find a course. It was not great but it was enough for us. It had a clever layout. A normal putting practice golf course had been laid out as a circle and outside of the minigolf course. The course can be found at the Hyatt hotel (not to far from the Gold Souk).
Directions: Hyatt hotel (not to far from the Gold Souk).

    Quad biking in the desert

    Me on the Quad bike
    1 more image

To go quad biking you obviously have to go out of the city a bit. Since there are many places around Dubai where you can rent a quad bike and take it into the desert, it is just a short drive from anywhere in Dubai.

The place where I went Quad biking with a couple of friends is located on the Dubai-Hatta Road, around half-way from both cities. We chose to rent the bike from "Al Qudra Motorcycle Rent" which is the first Quad-Bike place on Dubai-Hatta Road if you are coming from Dubai.

The stretch of the Desert that they let you bike in is relatively small compared to other Quad-Bike places around Dubai, but that's actually good if you are a beginner.

Equipment: The rent for a quad bike is 100 Dirhams per bike for half-an-hour and they won't give you any discount even if you go there as a group of people or rent the bike for a longer period of time.

However we managed to negotiate a couple of extra minutes within the 100 Dirhams.

    Equipment: Camel Racing

This may be your only opportunity to view a unique sport which is an integral part of the heritage of the UAE. Camel racing takes place during the winter season (Thursdays and Friday mornings, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., from October to March) at special tracks around the country. The atmosphere is electric, especially during public holidays when major races for considerable prize money are held. There is no admission fee.

Al Wathba Racetrack is about 45km east of Abu Dhabi. Al Ain Racetrack is situated approximately 25km from Al Ain on the Abu Dhabi road. Nad al-Sheba camel track, which has an impressive grandstand in the shape of a billowing bedouin tent, is located on the outskirts of Dubai city behind the Metropolitan Hotel. Sharjah, Ajman, Ra’s al-Khaimah and Fujairah also host camel racing but the camel racetrack, located between Falaj al-Mualla and Umm al-Qaiwain city, is one of the more simple and attractive of UAE racetracks.

    Arabian Ranches

Arabian Ranches Golf Club – formerly known as The Desert Course, Arabian Ranches, was built as a true 18 hole, par 72, desert style grass course, a signature course designed by Ian Baker-Finch in association with Nicklaus Design. Miss the immaculate grass of the fairways and greens and you enter the “sandy waste”, with its indigenous shrubs and bushes. All standards of golfer will also appreciate the GPS (Global Positioning System) yardage service available on every golf cart.

The Spanish Colonial style Clubhouse boasts the Ranches Restaurant and Bar, with a terrace overlooking the panoramic scenic views over the 9th and 18th holes, a great place to meet and try the international menu. Within the Clubhouse there are 11 luxurious Guest Rooms with spectacular views overlooking either the Golf Course or the Lake, each en-suite room is beautifully furnished. Step out of your room, hop onto your golf cart and drive or walk straight to the first tee, totally refreshed for your game of golf. The perfect setting for any golfer.

Equipment: Arabian Ranches Clubhouse is open 24 hours, 7 days a week for your reservations. With the best rates in town for both Golf and Guest Rooms, we recommend you book early. You can also visit the website and request your bookings on line at www.arabianranchesgolfdubai.com

The fully qualified Golf Professionals at the Golf Academy, sponsored by Lloyds TSB Bank, offer a variety of teaching programs for either the beginner or the more experienced golfer wishing to improve their game. The well-stocked Proshop also offers the latest in golfing apparel and hardware for all your golfing needs.

Architect Ian Baker-Finch, who knows all about links courses after his triumph in the 1991 Open at Royal Birkdale, believes the Arabian Ranches Golf Course is a unique challenge, “I spent many days on the site walking though the sand dunes with the camels before deciding on the best use of this unique property. I love the natural desert terrain. My hope is that you will love the natural flow of the holes through the sand dunes and wonderful desert landscape.”

Overall Arabian Ranches Golf Club gives you an all round unforgettable golfing experience.
